  1. Glen Cornick was a great player , he could construct a nice minor walk.
  2. Beauty!
  3. I do a weekly jam gig and often let others use my bass and rig. And it’s amazing how different it will sound from player to player. Now much of the time I’m playing a Dano Longhorn. It’s a cheap little tough as nails bass with twenty year old strings on it. And played through a good amp can sound perfect. This is a blues jam , and I love that classic old school thump. A surprising number of friends have bought Longhorns after playing mine. And in town at a blues gig in town you’re as likely to see a Longhorn as a Pbass.
  4. The late nights and early mornings can be brutal.
  5. Aguilar make great amps. They move air, the 500 would probably be all you need , but having headroom is always a plus. I’d lean towards the 700.
  6. Yes the second version, picked it up several months ago and it’s become a favourite. Light , sounds great. I like it.
  7. Pic Mostly Mexican instrumentals. A lot of fun. A trumpet playing band.

    Show us your rig!

New project last night , brought two cabs although I certainly could have survived using just one. HDN cabs , Monique driving a Forte amp. Sounded warm and thick.
  9. First gig last night for a little project we’ve been working on for a while. Played my favourite room in town, a lovely little dive down by the waterfront. Lots of familiar faces came to cheer it on. Place was packed, band sounded great, sound was perfect. This is going to be fun.
  10. Try a modern lightweight single 12. They’ve come a long way.
  11. Brought the full rig last night. HDN cabs , Monique driving the Forte. Sounded gorgeous.
  12. Mesas tend to be easy to dial in. Straightforward tone stack , and gain stages.
  13. Our big music chain is Long&McQuade they have stores from coast to coast. Thomann seem to run the empire with only one location and instead do a thriving mail business. Seems like a better idea , if I go looking for something basic like a shortscale flatwound bass string I’m invariably told it’s not in stock and has to be ordered. I think Thomann’s prices are much better as well. I wish Thomann had more of a presence here.
  14. They have a history of making some of the finest production instruments to come out of the US. I still have an old Ray , but it’s just a common 3 band. Beautiful thing though.

Dive isn’t an issue on mine. Love that shade of green!

    Flying Samurai

An old friend was the local Yamaha rep around this region for years , so I asked him about local Samurais. He said they are some around but I’ve only heard of a couple , and those were not for sale. Occasionally I’d see them for a good price in the US but those sellers were not willing to ship internationally. Sometimes you might see a US seller willing to ship , but those were usually asking inflated prices. I was reluctant to order from Tokyo. So , for the longest time , I didn’t think I’d find one. The odd one would surface in the UK one Australia , usually at a premium price. I spent some years watching and waiting. And then one popped up in Toronto for a good price. No taxes or duties.

They were inexpensive new. But because they’re out of production they fetch what people are prepared to pay, I will say they sound good , and are fun to play. Found mine for a good used price.
  18. We used to have to use tuning forks to tune up guitars and basses. And do it while disco music was blaring through the bar’s gigantic PA system. You’d bang the fork on your knee to get a pitch and then hold it over the pickup to hear it and get your A string to pitch. Then you’d tune the rest to the A string. Not easy to do while solo or shaking disco music was blaring. And the patrons did not care much for the pinging noises. You had to take turns tuning.
  19. Metronomes and click tracks are highly over rated. Never found one that could keep up with me.
  20. Playing at the local blues dive downtown , after eating a boiled dinner , I was a bit gassy. Cleared the dance floor.
  21. Mine’s a great little head but only sees occasional use.
  22. Most of my basses have flats. They sit nicely in the mix. Try ‘em.
  23. Now I’ve never owned one , but that Cort A4 is interesting.
