The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
msb replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
I remember looking at the original Rascal , it didn’t feel like a short scale with the bridge set so far into the body. I was fine with the Bass VI so I regret not picking it up now. I was always a Dano fan. The lipsticks were a bonus. They’ve become quite sought after because of the limited run they had. -
2Young 2Old , two younger guys , and a couple of geezers in the rhythm section. One guitar player is going back to Boston next week to finish his music degree. Talking to a young guitar wiz in between sets Friday and he mentioned if we were ever looking for a sub , he’d be interested. Perfect. I told him we’d get a date at our favourite old dive , and then go from there. Said if he could cover about a dozen vocals to give us the list. We’d do the study. So 2Young 2Old will carry on … it’s been an enjoyable little project for the summer. Not too serious. The gigs have gone well.

I don’t normally use any pedals on the gig. My amp has built in preset high and low pass filters , but I’ve been running a tube preamp through the effect return input. Bypassing the front end of my amp. so I’ll place this between the preamp and the power section. Glad to be gigging tonight , I’ll give it a twirl.

I love the look , and have one in the living room despite Herself thinking it was too big. (the SL112)
-
The Aguilar SL series have a very pronounced midrange.
-
Almost the same footprint and weight as the SL112.

Crafted in Indonesia , designed by Fender is what it says on the back. I believe it was one of the last reissues.

That looks great! I have a blue Ashbory , my intonation is a bit iffy in the upper register.

… and just like that you come out the other end and it’s over. The time will go fast.

The Sunday jam , we’ve been doing it for over 25 years now. Riley sitting in on the kit , Corey singing this one .
-
Are you running an RB1001 with a 15?

I’ve been a fan of Broughton, it’s just a little one man shop in Toronto but he’s managed to generate worldwide acclaim. His stuff is beautifully designed , really well built , and always services a distinct need. I’ve got the Hi/Low pass filter on the way.

Next time I see one for a good price I’ll try and snag it. They pop up fairly frequently in the US , but there’s only one I’m aware of locally. I’m always looking through various classifieds , from the local kijiji site to various forums and Marketplace. And over the years have found some deals , and paid market for some , and probably too much for a few things I simply had a hankering for. The loudest fan I’ve heard on a little Class D head is on the SWR HeadLite. When that thing kicks in it roars. I have a great little GK MB200 , a wonderful little head. I was giving it heavy use as a practice amp. Unfortunately the fan got gunked up and stopped working , and through over heating the power module fried. At the time I looked around and decided the MB200 was still the ideal head for that purpose for me. I’m fortunate to know a great amp tech that’s qualified to do Class D amps. It was fixed , and is still working like a charm. So these days I find it very reassuring to hear a fan come on …

It’s ok if a different bass feels different. Once you spend some time on it you adapt. And what feels uncomfortable at first can become comforting in time. Spoken by somebody with too many basses , and no duplicates.

It’s nice to be on the call list when there is a last minute cancellation. Congratulations !

After reading a lot of very positive comments on the Elf I’m thinking of finding one that’s lightly used. They do pop up on TB from time to time and despite the exchange shipping and duties sometimes one can find things that are simply not around locally. In the past I’ve bought quite a number of things from classifieds in the US and everything has gone well. I don’t need another amp. But I’m a little nerdy about them.

Duck Dunn was said to buy a bucket of fried chicken when it was time to change strings. sorry , double post , but the earlier one was back in February

The closest I’d have is a well worn 72 Pbass. That was my first real bass though so it would be one of the last ones I’d sell. For many years my only bass , it was mint when I first got it , and looks like it went through the Boer War now … still plays like a dream.

Unfortunately I’m in Canada , that other Halifax …
-
And a larger practice rig , Aguilar SL112 and a ToneHammer 350.
-
I do have a tiny practice rig , a PhilJones C2 cab with a Darkglass e500.
-
My mini rig for gigs. I also have a 210 Berg cab if I need more but this will cover most situations . Bergantino HDN112 with a Forte amp and a Monique preamp for warmth. I use the effect return input and bypass the tone stack on the Forte.
