  1. So.....I love and respect Duck Dunn for his groove.....to be honest, I never cared for the content of his basslines....what I love about him was HOW he played them, not what he played or the gear he used: He could've played an Alembic with all the active tone shaping options, coffee grinder, and built in ketchup dispenser, and he still would've played it with that same phat groove.........its the same thing I love about Cliff Williams
  2. I'm gonna toss Depeche Commode into the ring
  3. I'm glad you asked! I originally considered fingering examples but I honestly thought that wouldve been too difficult. With slap, theres all the resonant string harmonic structure to A/B the sounds. As @fretmeistersaid, "Forget Me Nots" is probably one of the most widely known P-Bass slap songs so I chose to do that as well for familiarity, plus i chose not to choke/ mute some of the notes and let them ring more....Keep in mind you are hearing the 5 basses back-to-back in quick snippets with the bass out front in a quick mix - Most of the time listening to music, you are hearing just one bass on a song with nothing to A/B it against. Try to think of it that way Thank you everyone who subbed. My channel is very time consuming, but it is a labor of love and I enjoy doing it very much
  4. Thank you very much. The videos are time consuming but fun to do....much to my wife's chagrin lol and I totally agree about Reverse P: I even covered the Reverse P topic myself in a different video about a Harley Benton MP4
  5. In the interests of both pseudoscientific opinionated curiosity and shameless self promotion, Im posting this video I made that addresses a lot of the common themes I've seen posted on social media (including during my brief tenure here on Basschat) about the P Bass...... enjoy, comment and discuss?
  6. I use roundwound .40s -- my attitude is "Theyre bass strings: they are already big!" 🤣
  7. Hi Jack I guess we are all HiJacking this thread 😁
  8. So, Ive owned Stingrays four times in my life (early 90s, twice in the 00s, and 2020/now) and always the same story: Played a lot of slap style on J basses, bought a Ray because I wanted that Ray slap thing, got used to it, wanted that J thing again, sold the Ray, wash, rinse, repeat X 3. This last time in 2020 I bought another Ray, an EB Stingray Special HH. This time, I was switching musical styles (to rock/metal) and even trying a pick after avoiding one for decades. My current Stingray is my first twin pickup Ray and, although Im not doing the pick/rock/metal thing anymore, I really like this bass so Ill keep it. Great recording bass although the second pickup makes slap style not near as friendly as on single pickup Rays
  9. So, I just published my MP-4 review.........I overall like this bass a lot......the pickups Im on the fence about and I dont care for the preamp but, other than those, its quite a fantastic bass for this price
  10. Hi.....I'm new also....and, although I do play the bass guitar, I also own ( and have used on some of my own recordings) bass guitar VSTi instruments: I have two - the Solemn Tones Kraken and the Amplesound P bass
  11. im willing to bet on a list of People I want to attract to the shows, "Lizzy fans with extra spending budget" rank high while "bass players" rank pretty low.... 😁
  12. Holy Diver by Dio ......besides Jimmy Bain's great Yamaha BB2000 tone, it's his fretting hand "bounce" that chokes the notes at just the right length that makes the difference
  13. I love fresh new rounds on basses and The G.3 with brand spanking new rounds is an amazing sounding instrument..........(Sidenote: One of my earliest influences, Kelly Groucutt of ELO, used a G.3 a lot although he had more of a tapewounds/worn-flats kind of sound)
  14. I just saw Paul McCartney......80 year old man still gotta lotta juice.....excellent
  15. Cool - Thats the first one Ive seen like that...I always remembered EB-6s like this one: SG shape with bass clover tuning keys
  16. Ive taken my pointys to blues jams
  17. Im a "new strings" player - I like the sound and rich piano wire structure of fresh strings and change them as soon as they start losing brightness - usually what folks call the "broken in" period is when Im ready to take them off (I spend a lot of money on strings lol)...Needless to say, the first thing I do when acquiring any bass is put new strings on it so I couldnt tell you what the set that came with it sounded like (besides not being my gauge, usually budget basses come with budget questionable strings - and Ive had output issues with cheap strings before)....as stated earlier, the pickups/electronics arent great but they dont suck either and I have no issue gigging this bass out as is (the pickups/electronics are good enough that Im not going to swap them out)
  18. I have a Harley Benton Enhanced MP-4 in my bizarre collection of basses..........with the exception of the pickups/electronics (and, while not great, they really arent that bad either) and the weight, it is actually a very decent instrument...I personally would have no issue gigging it out as an option to my usual Fender, Stingray, or G&L ASAT that I normally take (if I ever decide to start gigging out again lol - Im currently taking a break from gigging)
  19. I have two...My 1995 G&L ASAT and my 1989 Fender Power Jazz Special
  20. Ive heard about this place for awhile, decided to stop in...Ive been a professional bassist for over thirty years although taking a break from gigging atm...... I own several basses, some of my faves are: 1995 G&L ASAT 1989 Fender Power Jazz Special (MIJ) 2014 Fender American Deluxe Jazz V 1982 Peavey T-45 1983 Peavey T-40 2003 Peavey Cirrus USA 2020 EB Stingray Special HH plus several others Amps: My fave is my Peavey MiniMega 1000 Cabs: SWR Goliath stack and Triad (straight outta the 90s lol) I have a YouTube channel I started, in which I review basses and just talk about some funny stuff from my career. Thanks for having me Rib13 Bass - YouTube
