Getting over "the one that got away"
asingardenof replied to Bafflegab's topic in General Discussion
When I was a student in the late 90s I saw a 70s Jazz for sale in a second hand shop in Leeds for £750, which was tantalisingly outside the budget I had available to, you know, eat and stuff. It was gorgeous, natural finish and maple board and looked the business, and I was extremely tempted. But other things took priority so I left it on the hanger. If I'd spent the money on that rather than the Marshall half-stack I bought instead (no idea why to this day, but I did make a tidy profit on the amp so it's not all bad news) then I suspect I may have done more with my bass playing over the intervening 20-odd years. -
Same, I gave up on piano lessons way too soon at 11 and only decided to get back into music when I was 18 and all my mates were getting guitars so I asked for a bass for my 18th. And then I never took it seriously until I was well into my 40s. So trying to get back into it now is tricky what with life happening at the same time.

Depends on what I'm playing at any given moment - my "sound" is very ephemeral.

I'm not using great headphones to be honest and it just sounds like someone's twanging an elastic band. Will give it a proper listen on some decent ones when I get home.

The 4 ohm Four10s are on the website now:
-
I'm currently doing it with an ABM and a BF Two10S - can highly recommend this combination.
-
It might just be the headphones I'm listening on but McCartney's bass just gets buried under the other instruments. Generally good but this aspect is disappointing.
-
I don't suppose Alex gave any indication about availability, or when they'd be on the website for us to lust after?
-
Possibly a similar arrangement to the Markbass 103 then?
-
I believe that if you earn over £1k from it you'll have to declare it. How you declare it is another matter though, you might have to do self-assessment just for the additional income if your main income is dealt with under PAYE. The other question is if you're getting paid in sterling because you're a UK taxpayer, euros because that's where the tour is, or in USD because the artist you're supporting is American, and also where you're getting paid.

I suspect the 2x10 and 4x10 won't be any different in size if all they've done is changed the impedence of the speakers. Maybe the 3x10 will just be half of a 6x10.

Yep, that was pretty much my reaction too.

NAD (First in a few years) Darkglass AO900
asingardenof replied to basshead56's topic in Amps and Cabs
I didn't get the chance to make full use of the one of these I tried, but for a fairly clean post-EQ sound through the PA it sounded pretty nice. Would love to give one a proper run though. -
It's on the BF website here: https://barefacedaudio.com/pages/using-multiple-10cr-cabs. Those new models aren't listed for sale yet, so not sure "launched" is accurate.

Retirement / nice gig going for someone?
asingardenof replied to casapete's topic in General Discussion
By my back-of-fag-packet calcs you'd have to be getting at least £312 per person per gig to make it worthwhile it being your only job (assuming equivalent to 37.5h/wk job @ nat min wage of £10.42 = equivalent annual salary of £20,280, divided by 65). I'm sure there's a lot more to it than this but on the face of it it doesn't sound a particularly attractive prospect from a financial point of view. -
Who's finally happy with their rig?
asingardenof replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
I'm pretty happy with my gear, but another cab of the same variety would be nice for larger and outdoor gigs. Other than that I think I'm sorted for the foreseeable on that front. More pedals would be nice as being in a covers band means there's always the potential to do something a bit leftfield which requires some additional tone manipulation, but I think the core of my sound is done and dusted. -
One reason why greatest guitarist lists are redundant
asingardenof replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
All "influencers" should really be called "advertisers". -
Not wanting to derail this thread (very contented BF Two10 user here for what it's worth) but this seems to have snuck in under the radar with no fanfare:

P bass pickguards, do they vary much in terms of fit?
asingardenof replied to shoulderpet's topic in Bass Guitars
They definitely can vary. I once bought a new pickguard for my Squier and it wouldn't even cover the routing for the controls. Fortunately I decided I liked the 20-year aged white one it came with so managed to sell it on again. -
I gather they're designed in Spain, which may mean they're some sort of offshoot of an established guitar maker. Washburn and Gretsch were founded in 1883 but this may just be a coincidence.
