SOLD!! - Crafter electro acoustic with Protection Racket Case
von Braun replied to TheGreek's topic in Basses For Sale
Yes, hard to argue with that, especially up against dreadnought Martins and Taylors being played enthusiastically after a few malts. Might need a bigger boat...to use a famous line. I'm still interested though. I'm having a cull myself, aiming to get down to just one Jazz and an acoustic so I can practice unplugged. I just need to square things with the powers that be on space and I'll get back to you, hopefully next week. Are you happy to ship it? -

Stealthy Black Epiphone Flying V Short Scale

I have for sale an Epiphone Flying V Short Scale (30") bass. Used by my youngest offspring in school bands etc, now surplus to requirements and I'm also funding the purchase of a medium scale acoustic bass for my next drinking and sailing trip (or should that be the other way around?) to the Hebrides! Although it has seen some action, the overall condition is very good and I can only find one real dink, which is on the rear tip of the headstock (I have hopefully captured this on one of the attached shots). No buckle rash. I have just serviced the bass; a good clean-up, tiny bit of intonation fettling, fretboard lemon oiled, restrung with new Rotosound .90 gauge short scale strings and I have also replaced the tuning pegs with a set of Wilko matt black models, replacing the original well-worn gold ones, which had weakened somewhat. The pegs now match the rest of the hardware, which gives the bass a more together look in my humble opinion. Sound wise, it is typical Gibson/Epiphone short scale, Jack Brucesque thump and growl but plenty of tonal variation with two fairly wide spaced humbuckers and a selector switch. Unusually for an Epiphone, it has a brass nut which takes out some of the traditional "muddiness". I had an Epiphone Rivoli in the 80s to which someone had added an extra DiMarzio PU in the bridge position (sacrilege I know) and it reminds a bit of that. I'm not sure if Epiphone still make these but it is a useful bass for those with smaller mitts, being short scale with a reasonable neck radius. The overall build quality is good and the white plate is ageing to a sort of ivory finish which looks pretty good. The fretboard is a particularly fine piece of rosewood and the frets have plenty left in them. It also came with a pair of Dunlop straplocks when I brought this off Pete Young (off this site) back in 2010. I will leave those on, as I think they are essential on any Gibson/Epiphone short scale. One small problem, the Epiphone headstock decal was a stick on, rather than being varnished into the finish, this has come loose and I am trying to source another. No real neck dive, despite a light wood body and mahogany neck. General description: 2004 model, made in Unsung, South Korea according to the Epiphone serial number guide. Body - Korina (very light whatever it is) Neck - Mahagony set neck. 30" Scale. Fretboard - Rosewood Pick-ups - 2 x Epiphone T-Bird Humbucker Controls - 2 x Tone, 1 x Master Volume & 1 x 3-way Selector Switch Bridge - Gibson/Epihone 3-point (pretty solid and with plenty of adjustment capability) Nut - Brass Weight - about 8 lbs according to my suitcase scales but I think a tad under that, this Korina stuff is pretty light. Case - I have no case for this, my daughter was using a jumbo gig bag to get it around but she won't part with that. I will however pack it safely in bubble wrap and a strong box if shipping is required. All in this owes me about £160. I live in Southampton and can also drop off at Waterloo station but I'm happy to ship at added courier cost, unless you're in Stornoway, in which case I'll drop it off to you next June! :-) I'm not really looking for trades, unless someone has a Fender T-Bucket acoustic going spare, in which case I would put cash towards that......unlikely I know. I think that's it, if there are any questions, please ask away. Purchased a pair of Jazz SD quarter-pounders from Si, top bloke, dropped them round to my brother who conveniently lived in the next village....what are the chances of that? You may buy with confidence from this man. Pick-ups are now on my Mexican Jazz. Much improved.

Aye, truly some player. I don't think it gets better than "Soul Man" for pure bass drive. Johnny Walker is doing something of a tribute on his Sounds of the Seventies slot at the moment.

For some reason, always thought it was The Damned's "New Rose"....I can remember it being a celebrated event among the cognoscenti at school. But hey, I've just celebrated my 48th birthday and things is getting hazy! :-)

Some band! Did a bit more digging on Keef's bass playing career, looks as if he did a fair bit of Exile on Main Street, probably because it was recorded in the basement of his chateau and he couldn't be a*sed waiting for Wyman to arrive!

Just read that Adam Clayton bit in work and burst out laughing....getting some serious glares now. Time to hit the road I think. Just finished reading a John Lennon biography, apparantly after the Beatles split up, Keith Richard stood in on bass for him with Clapton on lead for some televised gig he'd contracted to do. Mind you, I'd heard that Keef (allegedly) re-recorded a lot of Wyman's parts anyway.......so not really news that

Cheers again. I'll have a google for suitable veneers tonight. I'm thinking of getting the de-fretting done by someone who knows their stuff better than I do but the old wood-working skills are just about up to the re-finish job. Any thoughts on strings? I'm thinking some sort of groundwounds or nylonwounds would be in order, failing that I've got a decent set of La Bella flat mediums around somewhere, with some decent life left in 'em.

Thanks chaps, plenty of food for thought. I got the idea watching some Scottish - American folk thing on BBC4, one of the bassists was using what looked like a Godin (or something similiar) fretless electro-acoustic. Interesting sound, not quite stand up bass but with the something of that quality about, very woody with an element of er, slappiness about it. Be interesting to know how he had it tuned. The Dean is a full 34" scale so I've got a bit to play with on that front, although it'll only take a medium guage set of strings at most. Might see if Vince Hockey is still trading down in Southampton. Might be a job for a luthier after all.

Gents, I have an urge to convert my Dean electro-acoustic to a lined fretless. Has anyone ever attempted anything similiar? Since it's virtually the size of a stand-up bass, I'd thought I'd try and make it sound like one :-) I can foresee a few potential problem areas: 1. De-fretting - can this put any strain on the neck? 2. Intonation - there is no height or string length adjustment as it's a fixed bridge. 3. Conversion of the fretboard once de-fretted - I understand there are some good epoxy resins around, does anyone have any recommendations? Any advice will be much appreciated. Cheers VB

Good call. Thanks.

Giving my Epiphone Flying V a makeover at the moment and just a set of black Wilko mini Gotoh style tuners on - £24 plus postage. Really solid and surprisingly well made. As a straight swap for the originals, the only problem was the single fixing screw is in a different place on the Wilkinson tuners, so 4 small but unsightly holes on the back of the headstock. A small thing that a little wood filler and some black gloss/lacquer will fix.

Thanks for that. Just had a look at the website. I'm going to buy a Flying V template and some black-white-black 3-ply and have a go myself. What could possibly go wrong?

Bit of a longshot but does anyone know of anywhere where I can pick up a black pickguard for an Epiphone Korina Flying V......failing that a good custom 'guard maker. Much thanks vB
