1. Hehe, I need to get back to this; some of the paint is still slightly tacky in places though - it might be left until the warmer summer months!
2.
id not go so far as to say it was as good as a MIA, (obviously a good MIA)
I disagree. I've owned 2 CIJ Fenders (the 70RI precision I have now, and a 62RI fretless like the one for sale here) and they are both incredible basses. The fretless was easily the best jazz I'd ever played, it broke my heart when I had to sell it to pay rent. I bought the precision from far east guitars, and he had a similar one there when I did, as well as a 75RI jazz; it was a tough decision as they were all top-notch! Also, I set up another 70RI precision a couple of weeks ago which was another stunning bass. Conversely, I've played loads of American Fenders, and although some were very good, they never quite match the CIJ in my opinion, and some have been downright terrible! Although I think I'm yet to try a 'good' USA fender, I believe that the area that the Japanese Fenders excel in is quality control, which really gives them their edge. Of course, this is all IMO, and I will say that I'm only talking about 'modern' Fenders here (1980 onwards). But, one thing I wish they'd improve on the CIJ is the thickness of the poly finish!
3.
what is the 1x15 like on it's own? is there enough mids?
Enough mids?! *Hearty laugh* It's chunky mate! But the voicing definitely favours lower mids; my p bass sounds punchy as heck, whilst the stingray simply growls. Love it.
4. Yummy! I almost went for the 2x12 Matamp option too, but then found one of these at an ex-demo price...
5.
If they had thought of a better bottom horn design I'm sure it'd look a lot better.
+1 It looks like it's melting...
6. Ahh, I recognise this, the one that got away... As the previous owner who sold this to Rasta, I can vouch for what a cracking bass it is! However, it wasn't me who put the electrical tape on, it was the guy before me! (He also changed the pickups and made the other modifications). I sold my 2003 Streamer Jazzman not long after I bought this, the corvette knocked spots off it - it sounded dull and lifeless in comparison! Plus it has got the thinnest, fastest neck I've ever played. If I had the money, I'd buy this back in a heartbeat.
7.
Does it come with a bottle of vintage Chianti?
I may be able to arrange that
8. I have some chromes that were on my stingray for about 4 months. So they are nicely worn in and have mellowed out beautifully. Would fit another stingray, or any 34" scale bass with a 3+1, or 2+2 headstock.
9. Quick update for today, got the fingerboard glued on, happy new year!
10. Cheers guys, unfortunately I have had to rush the finishing; I need to have it finished before I go back home, which I thought will be Sunday, but now I'm thinking it'd be a better idea to leave on Monday, to give it a bit more drying time! It's not the greatest of finishes... obviously spray paint would have given a better result, but as I've never used spray cans before it'd probably be a lot worse. Really, it's just a functional, hard-wearing finish - haven't got a case/bag for it. As I said when I started the project, I wanted to fix this up for the least amount of money possible, and in all it's cost me about £60. It looks good from a distance though... Anyway, today I've got the final coat of paint on And here you can see the back of the neck, I'm quite pleased with how the masking came out - I was dreading taking the tape off, but it doesn't look too shabby New years day will see the fingerboard being reattached!
11. Not too much to update, most of my time is spent waiting for paint to dry at the moment. Here's a pic of it as it stands right now - everywhere that's green has had 2 coats, when it's dry tomorrow I'll be able to hang it again to do the first coat on the bottom of it!
12. Yeah mate, it's just a standard can of crown gloss :-/ it's going on nicely with a foam roller though. I've got the first colour coats on the front, sides and headstock this afternoon, it's looking good! I'll get some more pictures up tomorrow
13. Been back at it today, after yesterday's day off for festive debauchery! Firstly, thank you to everyone for the kind words and help with this, I'm really enjoying journaling this on here. Anyway, I started today by sanding back the filler on the broken f-hole. However, unfortunately the mix of veneers and grain filler didn't hold and hey presto... A few choice words were said at this point. I felt quite stuck; like I was a bit out of my depth, and I couldn't think of how to fix this. So, I did the only thing I could... got rid of the problem all together... hehe, it actually felt good after I put the jigsaw away and sanded the edges, like it wasn't hanging over my head anymore. I really like the new shape, and it also makes it a little more unique, hopefully it wont effect the tone in too much of an adverse way. Through the new hole I found out his birthplace... And after a bit of shaking and reaching around in the body, I found the loose soundpost, and a very old cigarette. Smoke 'em if you got 'em So, with the new larger hole, the soundpost wasn't too hard to knock back into place And I tidied the edge of the new hole with a little filler, that I'll sand back tomorrow. Then the front should be ready for a coat of primer! Next I did some work on the tuners - when I took them off, I noticed that the screw heads were really chewed up, so I bought some more. Unfortunately, I couldn't get brass, but nevermind. However the new screws have countersunk heads, so I had to countersink the holes on the tuners. Then I retired inside for a nice cup of tea, and had a session with the Brasso and WD40, to try and breathe some new life into the metal parts of the bass before I reassembled them. Shiny! Lastly, and possibly the most exciting news... I decided to stick with one coat of primer, as I'm really up against the clock on this project; I need to finish it before I go back up north! So, the first colour coat is on the back! I absolutely love the colour...
14.
They have. There's a +10dB gain switch on the front.
Haha, I'm observant as ever!
15. Cheers mate! I'm getting through it quickly as I'm only back at my parents' for another week, and I haven't got the room to work on it at home!
16. A quick yuletide update... First coat of primer is on the back and sides, just waiting to do another layer of filler on the broken f-hole and sand it back, and then I can do the front!
17. I wish they'd put a pad on the front end of it - when I use my VT bass with my Stingray, I always find I can't turn the gain up past 8 o'clock without heavy grind... With the precision though...
18.
If it was me I'd be eyeing up the markbass 2x10 combo for sale in this forum
+1, tiltback too... Not that it's needed, the Markbass combos are really loud
19. Well, another busy day! Unfortunately the veneers didn't take too well, so I've filled the problem areas and I'll see what they're like tomorrow. I'll probably have to build up multiple layers of filler... However, the areas I filled yesterday have come out well now that I've sanded back the grain filler. I've also painted the inside of the headstock And the fingerboard is now finished! I polished it up with a splash of T-cut At the moment the back looks like it has more grain filler than grain... Tomorrow should involve more filler work, and hopefully putting a coat of primer on the back...
20. It's been another productive day! I've more or less sorted the really scrappy veneers on the side of the body (it'll just need some grain filler on the front to sort the small gaps out). I've patched the hole in the side of the body: Before After I've also put the first layer of veneers on the broken f-hole (it just needs one more layer) And also used some grain filler on the big scratches, I'll sand them back tomorrow.
21.
Hello m8, i've done something quite similar - albeit, mine was actually in a worse condition! the thread is here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...=serious+repair just keep going, it's fun - but a heck load of work at the end!
Cheers mate, that made for some interesting reading! I see what you mean about the condition - my jaw dropped when I saw the bridge...
22. Made some good progress today! It's still slow going - everything takes so long to dry in these temperatures. The fingerboard now has had a 2nd coat of paint; what would be the best thing to use to buff and polish this when it's dry? I've also glued the remaining layers of veneer on the damaged f-hole And we've experimented with a couple of different techniques to patch up the bass' scars: I couldn't get hold of any veneer, but I found this iron-on pastic edging - it looks horrible but will do the job, plus I plan to paint the bass, so it won't be seen. Of course, once the glue has dried I'll trim this with a razor blade. And we tested how well grain filler will work on the dings, scratches and gouges, I'm pleased with the result! Again, once it's sanded back and painted it should be all good. To help everyone feel a little more festive, here's a picture from behind my parents' house...
23. hehe, well this one looks quite level, so hopefully it should be ok! I'm going to go out and brave the cold to do some more work on it in a minute, just going to drink copious amounts of tea first!
24. haha, god knows what wood it actually is...
