1. Frustrating. I do the diary for our band and almost every rehearsal is mapped in with specific tasks to be prepared for gigs etc so to miss one is a setback. Doesn't seem to affect some people.
2. was being facetious about the chunk of chrome. I'm a Stingray devotee, P seems a little flimsy and tinpot after playing a Stingray for a while. A appreciate the qualities of a good Jazz but just can't get on with them myself. Sound and ergonomics of a 'Ray is what and all I need. (Nothing wrong with a P, classic design and I have two, but improved with the Stingray).
3. I can't think of an occasion where, with 1100W of speaker capacity and 900W amp you'll be troubling anything like half the power handling of any of it. The rating is to do with the heating capacity of the speaker coil. You won't blow anything unless you're completely daft with it for a long time.
4.
As much as fender fans would deny it obviously Leo knew what niggles needed getting rid of when he designed it so things like the bit of scratchplate that always snaps off p basses was addressed right away with a big chunk of chrome that's going no where for example.
As in Jazz basses?
5.
Most maple fingerboards are covered in laquer, which is a very hard surface wheras rosewood generally is not. A well respected Brighton luthier told me that it is usually maple fingerboards that get that 'clanky' sound that many who prefer them are after. But he said that if I had a rosewood board and laquered it I would also get pretty much the same experience. Which is probably why Rickenbackers sound that way, despite have a rosewood board, because they laquer them...
I would have to say not to believe all you hear
6.
thanks a lot matey, no bass, drums or guitar thru the desk or the singer 'll ave a wobbler.. Its his PA...where would be the best place to put it whilst recording?
Use one desk for the pa and if you can get your hands on another (and the mics and leads) for the night use that one for recording. The mix will be different anyway.
7. Is it because stingrays in particular are, in my opinion anyway, sort of hard wearing utility type bass and gold and bling just doesn't seem to go for many?
8.
I've seen a couple of PreEB rays go for 700 quid in NZ. Simply due to a lack of demand. My mate bagged one. There was a Kubicki Ex Factor for sale for $1100 last week. If I wasn't having to cough up for tradespeople, I'd be stockpiling...
I couldn't buy a bass called 'Ex-Factor'
9. http://basschat.co.u...60#entry1889016 Worth a read before initial judgement Yes, do post up a pic, you may be the first in the world to do so!
10.
On closer inspection, it looks as if the back of that neck is all flattened in places where the finish has been taken off too far. Even if it is correctly profiled it looks rubbish- Road Worn? More like Road Torn....
To be fair I think the neck came from another source and attached as he broke the truss rod in the original. I think its the irregular application of dirt (under the lacquer) which gives the impression of flats. Under an ad for a very expensive s/h case "Depending on use with left/right hand guitar or other preference, ..." I said I'd stop looking...
11.
I figured where he found his business plan, in the fifth Hitcherhiker's Guide book:
Yes, first class post!

13. Not as in Sister, then. Disappointing on two levels.
14. Found this: http://www.musik-schmidt.de/gb-Music-Man-Sabre-MN-Sledge.html but can't see any other reference to a new Sabre (I suppose to follow up the 'Ray Classic). Anyone else know anything about this?
15. Well, it is making a comeback isn't it? I wonder, as we're all getting fed up with the 'establishment' music, ie X_Factor etc, that this more complex and difficult music will come to the fore, then we'll think it pompous and Punk will have a renaissance. Then, disgusted, we'll get into 'establishment' music again....
16. If the hit on the strings is intentional effect then fine, but many bassists give a little unconscious hit to keep time and this makes for a messy sound.
17.
Brighter than what, pine? Rosewood is brighter than maple, and ebony brighter than rosewood. The tonewood debate rages on amongst the wags in the same fashion that the driver break-in debate does. Luthiers don't debate tonewoods, because they know from experience what different density woods do. Loudspeaker designers don't debate break-in amongst themselves, for the same reason. But pundits will jabber on forever.
Rosewood. I agree, if there is any difference (which I doubt) then the slightly harder the wood on which the metal fret is mounted the brighter the expected sound.
18. Get some to club together for a Hipshot
19. Blimey, that was quick!
20. I think Bilbo was having fun playing with words.
21.
I'm not so sure this is a modern phenomenon. When I was 13-14 yrs I went through CB Radio, Tropical Fish, Skateboarding and an ITT Combat Radio, all of which my folks shelled out for, and I did have my moments of being a most ungrateful brat. Mind you, I stuck with the Bass.... 30 years and counting
Always easy to blame the kids of nowadays. Who provides the role models? Who brings them up? Who provides them with stuff? Adults. Whose fault?
22. Also explains why some people believe maple fingerboards make a guitar sound brighter.
23. I think Alex did in the past, probably too many going through to be able to do that now, easier to link to a signal for home 'Hellatoning'. I'm suspect the effect of loosening is different with different speaker construction/size etc. Perhaps the foam surrounds are less needing a loosen. (They certainly become loose after 10 years or so when the foam begins it's conversion to dust!).
24. Yes! Dangerous, but a nice feeling. Did some recording on Saturday, drummer is a perfectionist with a sharp ear and wanted to go through the first track as he heard some bass parts not in time. Ran through with everyone, got to the end, he couldn't find anything and it sounded surprisingly tight to me!
25. See, now I don't think we should be taking the mickey, he wants to earn himself a little pin money, then fine. I don't where to start with this one though; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kay-P-bass-thought-perhaps-1968-with-ebony-fingerboard-/190759708552?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2c6a2a2788 Exceptional when you look at the second picture, the one of the headstock. The string path, the left handed tuning pegs set at a convenient angle. When you can buy a brand new starter bass for less than this, surely no-one buys these guitars? Despite his honestly in the ads, does he think everyone else is a fool? Do you get the feeling that, if you had a conversation with him, he'd be 'right' about everything in the world? Ok, feel guilty of gossip now. I'm not looking at his ads anymore.
