Sick of waiting for mine already and I only ordered it on the 8th! The FedEx tracker says estimated delivery by the 18th. That's shocking! Not only do I want a US Fender quality bass for £96 including delivery, I also want it NOW!

My Clayton Acetal Wedge picks turned up today from stringsdirect. Just the job, they feel great. I got the 1mm but I might try the .80mm next time just so they have a tiny bit of give. They feel superior to the old Gibson wedges I used to use. They have a nice matt finish to them for the non slippiness and as far as is possible to tell, they seem pretty durable. Thanks to Dangerboy for the tip! Just have to wait for my SX P bass to turn up now! Paul.

I have only dealt with the Bass Merchant once...and I had pretty much the same experience. No chance of a reply via email, and a pain to get hold of by phone. Wasn't there someone called Jeff/Geoff who worked with Mike and who posted at this forum? I seem to remember getting a pm from him about my problem...but that might have been on the old bassworld site. paul.

I have covers on my Aerodyne mainly for aesthetic reasons. No mutes though. The cover over the neck pickup evens up my playing a bit. I am a bit heavy handed at times and quite often slapping over the neck pickup would produce loud pops. I like my pickups quite high so the cover is a good way around the problem. I have just taken off the bridge cover so I can palm mute. Specifically so I can play "If You Want Me to Stay" heavily muted and double thumbed. p.
Thats interesting, If i put both pickups on full the volume of the D and G strings drops a lot. It's like with both on full they phase each other out. Is the wiring wrong??
That doesn't sound right! Maybe it is wired wrong or the D+G part of the split P is just in the wrong way around. p.
I found however that the bridge didn't make much difference to the aero if you're using the neck, the p-pup just over powers it.
I replaced the stock ceramic J pickup with an alnico NOS US one in my Aero...now I get a great sound from both. My Aerodyne is everything up full. So is the VMJ Squier. The BB614 is normally everything up full, but occasionally i solo the P pickup. I have a SX P copy on the way...no difficult decision there then! I never use a bridge pick up solo'd but they are good to have in the blend to add a bit of growl. I actually spend a bit of time adjusting pickup heights on my basses so I get the tone I like with everything up full. The BB614 definitely has the bridge pick up slightly higher. p.
I use big 1mm Acetal triangles from Clayton's http://www.steveclayton.com/acetal.html And I get them custom-printed. Thinnest pick I've found that doesn't bend at all. Except for aluminium ones, but they scratch your bass something rotten.
Dangerboy comes up trumps for me in an old thread I found. Sounds like just the ticket. Stringsdirect do a 12 pack for £4.95 with £1 delivery. As tempted as I am by the custom printed option, my status as a bedroom player doesn't really warrant buying 100 and spending $69. It's taken me longer to decide what picks to get than it took me to decide to an SX p copy! p.

Cheers guys. Unfortunately eBay is off limits for me at the moment because they have suspended my account! Nothing to do with me...I am sure my account was hacked but I am waiting to hear back from them. Thanks for the tip off Dangerboy...no point going with the Gibsons if they are different now. Do you remember what thickness the Gibbos were? I just looked at some Clayton Black Ravens and the thickest are .63mm. That sounds about right but I can't be sure. Anything big, triangular with rounded corners and without any flex will do me. p.
-
I haven't played with a pick in years but now I have a SX precision on the way I think I better get some. I used to use these big Gibson Heavy triangular fellas. I think they were the "wedge" ones. Does anyone know them, or use something similar? And if yes, where is the best place to get them these days? Ta. Paul.
Thats the white plate it came with, I havent changed it
Did you not change it on your jazz? I was kind of hoping whatever format fitted the jazz would be good for the P too. I was thinking of getting a p/j configuration but my Aerodyne and BB614 are both p/j so there didn't seem much point.
-
I am hoping to leave everything stock (apart from the plate) I remember listening to samples of an SX jazz on TB, A/B'd with a Fender...and there wasn't enough difference to worry about! Neil, where did you get the plate from and did you get a US, Mex or Jap one? P.
-
Damn you NeilB for giving me the GAS! I have just bought this one... http://www.rondomusic.com/spb573ts.html I think a tort plate will find it's way on there at some point. Actually, I made £90 playing poker today so that will cover most of it. And I have overpaid my credit card too...so there is another £35 I have to spend. It's like getting a free bass! Now I just have to sit at the front door and wait! Paul. p.s. About 5 minutes form reading this thread to buying the bass. Quickest GAS turnaround ever?

Looks lovely. I am very tempted to get the maple fretboard version. How much was shipping? And with your modding experience, are the scratch plates standard Fender size? Ta. Paul.
has the Aerodyne got a PJ config?
Yup, but it does sound very jazz like for some reason. Thanks for the comments guys, I will get around to doing some fingerstyle clips int he new year. p.

There you go...a happy ending. Kudos to Mr. Volume for his post..a little explanation goes a long way. I just know from my time managing a furniture shop (don't ask) making a buyer aware of potential problems at the outset, and then keeping them informed during the transaction is usually the right way to keep bad vibes to a minimum. I am pretty sure if Volume added the caveat that it might take a while to ship at the beginning of all this then everything would have been cool and the gang.
'Tis a bit harsh. This is a fun forum...
But isn't it a fun forum because we all try to treat each other with a bit of consideration? Nobody likes being kept in the dark..and even one day of waiting for cool bass gear feels like a month! Do unto others and all that! But saying all that...the fact that somebody is getting some new gear on Monday is giving me GAS! p.

Playing The Dorchester in Southampton, mumblemumblemumble years ago! For some reason we were staying at the Chief Coppers (official title) house so he popped into the venue and encouraged the landlord to let us play for as long and loud as we wanted. It was a great gig, the support band were brilliant. Up Ballon UP IIRC. My girlfriend/now wife was there with her mates. We ended up playing into the small hours with practically every musician in the place getting up for a jam. A fine old time was had by all. p.

Back in my gigging days I would vary from playing (well, just living really) on a bottle of Southern Comfort, (NO! It is NOT called SoCo!) or a pint of orange squash. The worrying thing was that even my close friends couldn't tell the bottle of whiskey me apart from the squash me. More than once someone asked me to drive home after a full bottle of booze (I never did) or try to take my car keys off me when I had been on soft drinks all day. However, when I drank two bottles of Southern Comfort my ears used to get drunk. I lost all relative pitch and couldn't tell one song from another. So to sum up, I use too many (brackets). p. -
What I forgot to take into account was that the people on the forum are very diverse and lead very different lives and in this case, the person was a student who led a much more hectic/chaotic life than mine. So though everything got done in the end, it just took much longer
But not making this clear from the outset and not keeping the buyer informed is just plain rude. Surely if someone has enough time to contribute to a forum they have got time to send a message? If you're too busy to successfully complete a transaction...don't sell anything. I know it sounds harsh but for me, treating others with a little consideration is of paramount importance. p.

I don't really find delays like that acceptable to be honest. And yes, I know I'm anal about this kind of thing but if I'm selling something it will be packed and ready to go before it's sold and will be sent the same day or next working day once it is sold. If for some prior commitments that can't happen I would make sure the buyer knows exactly whats going on BEFORE he buys. As for unseen circumstances well, they are unseen obviously, but I would still make an effort to contact the buyer. I know how painful it is to wait for new bass related gear so I just couldn't bring myself to make someone else wait. Hopefully the guy will read this thread and at the very least offer you an explanation. p.

Can't somebody get Mr. Thomas down to an internet cafe and join him up to BassChat? He was obviously a big inspiration to a lot of us of a certain age. I for one would like to say thanks and shake his e-hand! p.

I had fallen out of love with my Aerodyne for quite some time and was on the verge of selling it to a mate. I decided to give it a quick set up for the potential new owner and in the process remembered what a great bass it is. I have now decided to keep it haven't been able to put it down since. p.
Personally, I really like the look of the Aerodyne with the trays/covers!

+1
I really thought I would be the only one! Cheers. Here is a quick and dirty sample of all three basses. Aerodyne first followed by the Squier and finishing with the BB614. Terrible playing as always, but it will give an idea of what they sound like. I chose to slap in this clip because IMHO a slap sound is something a lot of people struggle to get with budget basses, whereas a useable fingerstyle or pick sound tends to be more available at a lower price. IMHO. (Reapeated that bit to limit the arguments!) One thing to note is that the BB614 is the only one with new strings. Also I will express my surprise at the mids on the Squier. Hard maple body and maple fretboard would suggest to me less mids than the Aerodyne which has a basswood body and a rosewood board. Turns out I was wrong. I also went through my Zoom B2 with a bit of noise reduction, a bit of reverb and the limiter switched on. Personally, I love the sound of all three. Especially looking at the Cost Vs. Tone ratio! paul.

I am sure Bassassin will be along shortly with his encyclopedic knowledge of all things jap and Crap! In the meantime get some pics up of the Jazz Sound. We can be a shallow bunch and need visual stimuli! paul.
