Evening all. Hope you're good? Im using a Persons 16.0.02 desk. I have 4 Aux sends to monitors either in-ear or wedge. Is there a way of enabling each band member to control their own mix? At present they shout instructions whilst I'm playing for maybe the first couple of songs. My multi tasking as front of house engineer, monitoring engineer, bass player and shared singing duties is getting silly. Please tell me there is a really simple piece of outboard or software based kit I can get to just send the awkward bas88rds the signal, so they can create their own levels. We very rarely get time to try things out pre-gig. And the rest of the band have little interest in rehearsing to resolve this issue. I hate hit and miss stuff and I don't think they consider the extra hassle it causes for me. Thanks in advance

I went to see the late great Charles Bradley at the Hare & Hounds in Kingsheath in Birmingham. He was amazing for the 40 odd minutes he was in stage.

Basslines you struggled to learn then...BOOM!
KingPrawn replied to donslow's topic in General Discussion
So many to choose from. One of my biggest challenges recently has been using a pick instead of fingers. I’ve struggled to get the same speed. The start of Town called malice was a right nightmare in the beginning. With fingers faultless with pick ridiculous. I agree regarding leaving the line for a period always seems to help. -
There are loads of great preamps on the market. I use a Radial Bassbone OD. 2 channel with a handy eb section. Really simple and great quality. Might be worth looking into some preamps

Did music lessons at school help with your musical life?
KingPrawn replied to Nail Soup's topic in General Discussion
Whilst the late 80’s music curriculum had its limitations, particularly lack of instruments. I was lucky to have a music teacher who encouraged all us who had a passion to hang out in the music rooms. We talked about all the music we were listening too out side of the normal chart stuff. It’s construction and why we connected with it. She also brought in players from The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra to give us individual lessons. It gave us the opportunity to play in lots of youth orchestras and in my case brass ensembles. I fast forward to visiting the music classrooms at my children’s school and it’s littered with technology and creative spaces. So much more accessible. Allows all abilities to create their type music. -
Are Amps and Cabs still a thing moving forward?
KingPrawn replied to dmdavies's topic in General Discussion
Completely agree. You so right to mention the PA quality. Even on our small gigs I can get away with it as we have a decent RCF setup, which has 15” speakers to carry the bass. -

I think I’m in a transition period. I find myself either using my Radial preamp into a desk with a FRFR monitor or IEM, in most venues. The only time I love a big old amp is the festivals or big stage where you need to feel the air. Most other venues I just don’t need one. -
Guess the bass you hear before you see it

Not a clue -
I heard this on the radio yesterday and guessed it was a Wal bass. Not just the sound but also the year as they were so influential at that time. It is a great bass line. Bit harder these days to guess the bass as the options and quality preamps and pickups is so varied. Made me think, is it really the pickups I’m predicting ( Jazz, P, MM) than the actual make of instrument?

I’ve gone through various stages with this. Firstly I can’t see the smaller venues having live music as an option for the near future. They have a real challenge on their hands. The bigger venues we play would be easier for us as a band as only being four of us, we can maintain a distance from each other on stage/ back stage also no contact with guests. The risk is very much for the guests. Also three of us have all had the virus( although no solid evidence to support being less of a risk) we have a few weddings booked, which I had written off. However talking to wedding planners, the industry is working on some processes to enable weddings to go ahead. One wedding package actually includes tests for guests 3 days before the events and temperature testing. One of the main ingredients in all our gigs, which does increase risk is alcohol. Peoples inhibitions reduce once the ‘groove juice’ kicks in. We’ve all experienced the impact it has, both good and bad I just don’t know

That pretty much looks like 60% of the venues we play already. We have clearly been advocates of social distancing for years!!

After a bag of cans, I play like that!

Music to chase away family members, friends etc
KingPrawn replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Some great songs mentioned. My personal favourite is this. Not only does it remove all family from my space. I use it at the end of gigs to clear the venue and restore my musical balance. I think it's the resonance that gets them. -
I would suggest you have a serious look at Sandberg basses. The build quality is excellent and they are very versatile. The California T or VM are great to play. There are also some really good secondhand deals to be had.

Second for the Shure. Its consistent and built out of military grad material. It will survive anything.
