They themselves were watering down older US punk stuff more than anything else.
Whilst this is true to an extent, there are still "old school" bands around, its more that they are not given the same exposure as their squeaky clean pop punk contemporaries. I actually think there is a time and a place for both.
2. Schecter do some nice one's but good luck with finding one in the UK!
3. Lovely bass, if I can just shift mine quick enough..
4. I think I'm mental for doing this but I'm putting this up for sale or trade. I've had this bass for approximately two months, its in brand spanking new condition, it still has the protective film on the scratchplate! These are pretty hard to get hold of in the UK and I had to take advantage of a trip to Scotland to get mine. The bass itself is beautiful. Its got a lovely metallic blue finish and the neck is unfinished and feels delicious! I'm moving it on as I have discovered that your classic P Bass neck simply isn't for me. I'm quite gutted really because I wanted to get on with this bass as it sounds great and looks fantastic so curse these small hands of mine. For sale price I'm looking for £330 given the condition and how new it is. I think this is a great price given that it is practically unplayed and these are £500 new. SOLD!!!!!!!
5.
There's one here but its not cheap. In fact it cost more than the DD up for sale here. CIJ 70s P
Yeah, I looked at this yesterday, unfortunately its out of my price range.
6.
Just to muddy the waters....Yamaha BB414/424's have quite sporty necks and these passive versions have super hot pups....and there is a bonus J screwed on the end to stop you getting bored;) I simply love mine and a real keeper but you really need to play one to see why owners like them so much OTPJ has a 424 for sale I think? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=98388
Nice, what is the width of the neck at the nut?
7.
The Fender CIJ 70 reissue Precision has an intermediate neck that is between traditional P and J width and is very easy to play. Cracking bass, recommend you check these out. Appear with some regularity on BC
Looking this up and it is a beauty, exactly the sort of thing I'm after.
8.
I know you said you were aware of Laklands, but did you see this in th FS section http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=101778&hl= ?
Yeah, I saw this, just a little out of my price range unfortunately as it looks mighty purdy.
9.
I've got a passive MIM Precision Special Deluxe but you aint having it! These are the best I reckon for your price range. MIA electrics and pups. They're a quite a bit rarer than the active ones though.
This does sound right up my street, time to go look I think...
10. After realising that Precision necks really are a bit too much for liking I'm on the lookout for basses that fufill this criteria. I'm aware of the Lakland's and fender deluxe. I'm am looking at passive basses and something under £400.. Cheers!
11. Saturday night we headlined our own punk festival in Sussex and the reaction was fantastic. We decided to headline and was so glad we did, the crowd went absolutely MENTAL! We had a pit in the middle with everyone else dancing on stage or at the sides. By the end it was like the walking wounded with paramedics turning up to treat people who had got caught up in the frenzy. Luckily nobody was seriously hurt, but the feeling of knowing we had made a group of people give that much energy and emotion to our songs was pretty amazing.

My band skurvi are playing a gig tomorrow (monday) at romford horn with snide plus others. If you're local come down and make yourself feel better about your own bass playing! Doors are 8 and should be a bit of a laugh, what else are you gonna do on a monday?
14.
Peavey does the job but its only let down is the weight. Even though the Hartke LH500 isnt lightweight, Id take that over a Peavey. It has had fantastic reviews.
I've heard this and I am considering already. I think its just a case of actually trying these things out and seeing what I like best. I may try and get rid of the Hartke 2500 I have currently, any ideas on a ballpark figure?
15. A lot of people seem to be recommending the Peavey kit which I have used in the past and did quite like. As has been pointed out the weight can be a bit of an issue..
16. I think I will add the Orange to the list of maybe's then and head down a local shop to try it out. I think the sensible thing at the moment would be to look at pedals to see if I can achieve the desired results from that change though as its much cheaper. Then if I'm still not getting the tone then I will look at changing the head at that point.
17.
Hartke LH500 + Tech 21 BDDI or VT Bass. Personally, for modern punk, the BDDI. Or, you could try the Orange Bass Terror.
I've heard good things about the Bass Terror, it certainly fits the size category I just wonder if it'd do the punk job well?
18.
The Catalinbread SFT currently in the for sale section for £100. If you want good grit that would be hard to beat. TBH I would suggest you just do that and keep your current Hartke 2500 into a 4x10 cab rig. Any particular reason (other than dirt) why that rig isn't working out for you?
Its just a case of not getting the sound I would like out of it. It has plenty of power but not a lot of soul so if I can achieve that with a pedal I think it must be worth a try. There is also a part of me that wants a lightweight rig. As we're playing small gigs normally (largest being the concorde 2) it seems a little pointless having heavy equipment to take to pubs and small club shows. I also like the idea of taking a barefaced midget cab on stage to derision and then blow people away!
19. I was considering the Tech 21 Bass Character pedal which emulates the svt. Any suggestions?
20. Cheers for the ideas guys. I'm playing a hartke 2500 at the moment through a warwick 410pro which is loud but doesn't have that gritty, gainey sound i'm after. Oh, i also would like to have something fairly small as big things aren't train friendly..
21.
I used to play quite a lot of those songs in the 90's, I always used my old Fender Bassman 135 with a beaten up old Laney 4x10. You can get a great raw, punk sound with that combination. I think it's down mainly to the amp, any 4x10 would do I guess. It's good as Bassmans are pretty unliked so you should be able to pick one up for a steal.
Your recommendation wouldn't have anything to do with your name would it?!
22. I'm looking to upgrade my amp and cab to something a bit more meaty but the price of Ampeg's is too much for me to bear. I like the bass sounds of 90's punk bands like Rancid, Distillers, anti-flag and would like to replicate it. Anyone got any ideas of what would be a good alternative?
23. Anyone know how I can achieve the tone on The Distillers first album where Kim Chi played? It sounds very punk rock to my ears whcih in turn equates to sexy.
24. Will do guys, I've just moved house so finding all the bits to make that possible isn't that easy! I'll see what I can do tonight..
