1.
For me it must be a Selmer TnB 50 and Goliath cab. Sounded like someone kicking a cardboard box. On the plus side, they were dirt cheap back then. I really can't understand why they sell for big money nowadays.
I use one of those, best amp I've ever had.........
2. Kind of self taught........ I said to my dad I fancied picking up the bass - he dug out the Hofner, I wouldn't get my hands on the Jazz for a while. He taught me how to tune it, hold it, and walking bass. He reckoned that if could do that then i'd be off to a good start. Then it was years of playing along with records. Here, theres a thing, did anyone else play singles at 33 to learn them? I recall that one string up and two frets up held the tuning and it was a matter of replicating the pattern once you got the speed up...... did anyone else do that?
3. Really pleased to see that people remember The Prisoners!! Tremendous act and extremely influential if you're playing in the garage/mod/60s vibe circuit. I recently got an LP from their latest incarnation Graham Day and the Forefathers
4. You can get a brand new Hofner icon violin bass off Thomann for about £20 less than half the sellers on ebay are asking for a second hander......
5.
most of us are nice and will do if it makes sense
I sometimes have trouble getting them to do it and they want the DI instead. I'd much rather have the tone from the amp - I understand it's easier to do but my spies in the audience always reckon the mic is better.
6. I got a sound engineer to mic my cab the other night without looking at me like I'd sh*t on the stage
7. get the operation. Its minor, can be done under local and you'll be playing in days.
8. I tap from the knee down...... a lot
9. I've played in Blackfriars a good few times, Its normally late club nights though. McChuills in the High St just at merchant city is usually good for live free music at the weekend. The quality of bands is usually top notch. The New Piccadillys were in there on Sat night for free. An amazing band.
10. As part of a deal I got a crappy cab for free whicj turned out to house an Audiom 91 18" speaker - the type that were in Selmer Goliath and Vox Foundation cabs. It kind of works, there as a low volume farty sound but the cone is almost completely detached at the outer ring and its a bit bashed in general. I reckon it's worth saving. I asked Flynn in Glasgow but they couldn't help - so does anyone here know someone that can?
11. I had a 4003 as my main player between '95 and '05. I bought it for the looks. My other bass was a '77 jazz that was frankly better sounding but just too heavy. I bought an Ibanez ASB140 semi in the States in summer '05 for $500 (£250 at the time) and that quickly relegated the Ric to the bench. It was better in every sense in tone and playability. I sold the Ric in '07 to finance a Kilt for my wedding. I don't miss it at all.
12. I remember you from the hofner hounds website where I got great advice and encouragement bringing Verithin bass '484' back to life. I used it in the recording of an album this year on 3 songs - so its still banging away. Have fun in the challenge!
13. Thanks Dad, Ill check when I get home. How's the Hofner Doing?
14. The controls on my bass are pissing me off a wee bit and I think its how its wired Here's the problem. Switch position to neck - neck Volume to full (bridge pickup to Zero) = Great Switch position to centre - neck volume to full = silence Bring in Bridge pickup = both pickups on Switch Position to Bridge - bridge volume to full (neck off) = Great So it seems that I can't properly control the volume and tone for each pickup (like you can on a Ric) as the bridge volume is a master volume (switch in centre position) and blend combined. I'd like to do away with this - any ideas? Bax
15. Thanks folks. I reckon it'll be an experience for sure!
16. On Saturday I'm doing my first ever bass dep job! I've sctually seen the band once and there's a rehearsal on Thursday night. 30 covers mostly Jam, Who, Kinks, Small Faces and a bit of soul and a bit of ska. I know pretty much everything but never gigged most of it. However I'm very much looking forward to the experience.
17. just in case this applys to anyone else's guitar. I wasn't getting along with the volume controls, they were only winding up at the far end of the rotation and it was tricky to get a decent setting. So I got my tech to swap out the logarithmic 'audio' pots for linear ones that supply the power by what number its on rather than what you hear. Anyway it solved my gripe, yhe controls are much more intuitive it works for me anyway.
18. I got the status ones. the girl on the phone said they may not produce them anymore.
