Played classical on and off for a number of years. Longer nails do sound fantastic but sadly bass playing duties get in the way. You can play without though. Les
Why am I the only one on Buddy's side? Blue
To be honest Blue he's coming across as a bit out of control in parts. I'm no expert on Buddy Rich but I know who he was and I find it difficult to imagine you'd get in his band without being a world class player yourself so how bad did these guys mess up ? Or was this just an every night "here we go again" rant on the bus for everyone ?

Very difficult to find. Most short scale basses are to long for a guitar bag, After searching for eternity I got the Fender one, fits the Mustang and my other short scale's perfectly. It's not a good as my Ritter bags but it's certainly OK for car travel.

When I use my electric upright as well I use a Bellcat A/ B pedal. It has a volume control for each input so I balance them with that. Also need an eq pedal for the EUB but the A/B is ideal for getting the levels the same. Les
So I've been playing on the Isle of Wight since I was 15 (that's 30 years, man and boy - OK mostly boy). It's a standing joke down here that pubs have ALWAYS paid £120 per night on average but sadly it is actually the case.
Are you sure that's the case ? There tends to be a lot of bullshit talked by bands and I'm never sure anyone is telling the truth about fees. Most of us can only say with any certainty what our own fees are. I know what we ask for and get and I know there are cheaper bands on the scene because I see them responding to ad's with a specific fee mentioned but that's all I really know. Les
It's just an intrigue really - I've got more PA stuff than you can shake a stick at!
As this is an intrigue thread here's an intriguing photo of our aforementioned rig in it's packed up ready to go in the trailer state. That's everything including the monitors, lights and lead bags/boxes. The only things not in shot are the mic box, stands, the desk flight case and my combo Les

Gonna just buy a new one Morris. After all that it's been through including the dishwasher the thing still powers up and lights up so maybe it could be fixed. Have to say for a pedal that cost me about 28 quid and does what it says on the tin I've had about 2 years of flawless service from it and it's no fault of the pedal that it's now being replaced. Impressive Thanks for ever ones input guys Les
Oh well it probably wasn't going to work anyway and as you say was cheap enough. Bad luck.
Not over yet Phil. Coroners report due about 7.30
Be good to hear how you get on with this.
Took it to bits and couldn't actually see any gunked up parts. Cleaned every thing with switch cleaner and a toothbrush gently. Let it dry then tried it out. Same as, lit up but no signal coming through. I don't have the leads at home to try the balanced XLR out so no idea. Took it a apart again and tried the warm water mild detergent.Let it dry and got the hair dryer on it. Same result. Given that it's dead and really cheap to replace I've just tried chucking it in the dishwasher a couple of days ago in a "can't break it any more than it is" stylee. Will put it together and try it again tonight but not holding out much hope. cheers everyone

I suppose if it's the norm in the area you operate then that's just the way it is. Here in pubbandland it isn't thankfully. In fact we recently knocked one back that wanted 3 x 45 minute spots. Maybe it's an age thing as well but the thought of playing for 4 hours doesn't thrill me much to be honest. Les
Pressure to get it 'up to speed' from band as usual!
Yep, get it up to speed and then the singer will want it in Ab

Thanks Phil, will try that. Not gigging for 2 weeks so plenty of time to be patient. What about loads of switch cleaner and a modicum of pressure on the gunky bits instead of water ? Les

I know, I know ! We're old enough and experienced enough to know better but it's happened. My Behringer BDI 21 suffered the brunt of it and died a slow painful death during the 2nd set. The other pedals are fine but although the BDI 21 powers up and lights up the signal isn't coming through and the switch feels sticky. It's the cheapest of my pedals but it's the one I use the most other than my compressor which is on all the time. I've tried a bit of switch cleaner but to no avail. Anyone got any ideas before I confine it to the parts bin and buy another ? I don't mind trying a kill or cure cos' it's just a paperweight anyway now. I can't be the first to suffer a beer attack on my pedal board. ta Les

A lack of diary discipline will get you sacked from my band.
Zero across three bands. What do I win?
A night depping on bass for me while I prop the bar up at my Jam Night. Why should you be the only one not suffering

Nicked from another forum My main band scores 2 and my Thursday Jam Night band is practically a full house
I wonder if the reluctance of bass players to learn tunes that they might never play bears any relation to why bass solos are so rarely performed and received well. They're just tunes, it's not hard. I don't understand. I've had the same problem when it comes to learning new tunes with a band. Just go away, learn the tune and if it doesn't work, bin it, learn another one. Too many closed minds considering we're supposed to be musicians.
Hi Tim I don't think anyone is reluctant to learn new tunes for a band, it's just the 20 songs for an audition that seems to have people raising their eyebrows mate. It is in my experience of auditions an unusual amount to learn, and it would appear the same for many who've commented on this. Les
Regardless, from the responses here, the consensus leans toward, 20 songs for a traditional audition is questionable.IMO Blue
Agreed. I suppose one way of looking at it is your prepared to do 20 songs for an audition your chances of getting the gig are higher than usual as going from this thread there's a sh*t load of us not turning up for the audition anyway.
-
Got to agree about the 20 songs for an audition. It's ridiculous to expect that and I would have bowed out at this. To me it actually screams "amateurs, steer clear". We auditioned for guitarists about 15 or 16 months ago and they had 3 songs to learn, all different styles but we expected those 3 to be nailed 100%. I think that's as much as you can reasonably expect. By all means have a go at anything you all think you can get through after that, after all the auditionee is auditioning us too. Les

Come on Dave, we're all awaiting a match report, you satin wearing demi-god you. I'm particularly interested in the amount of security required to hold women back from storming the dressing room.
