1.
Keep up with the piano lessons and send him to cheathams, never did me any harm!
My drummer went to Chethams! He finished this summer. I'd say buy him a decent entry-level bass and find him a good tutor. Also buy him a good theory book - he can work on that himself, working some things out on piano.
2. That sounds like a wonderful experience.
3. With its poaching of Parliament's Mothership Connection.
4. Any type of power amp will do the job, it doesn't have to be bass-specific. Just make sure it has connections on the back you can actually use, such as speakon or 1/4" jack. I wouldn't recommend one with banana plugs. I'm very happy with my Eden WT1000. I also have a QSC RMX850 which is good too (even has a few extra features such as 50Hz and 30Hz filter switches). I think there are a few secondhand QSC bargains to be picked up on here from time to time.
5. I quite like the little Warwick practice combos. I keep meaning to pick one up myself but I'm a bit disorganised at the moment.
6. Beware of groupies with fake IDs. On a less serious note, start your own band. Nothing will improve your overall musicianship as quickly or as thoroughly as leading your own band. At the same time, nothing will make you more fat, more bald, more miserable and more stressed. It's very rewarding when it all works though.
7.
- "one drop" - leave out the first note in a 4/4 bar. Instant reggae, mon!
When you're starting out, best to get that one nice and solid. You can leave it out for effect later. The others in your band will get lost though (unless the drummer's there too). Still surprises me, that.
8.
Their website lists the price as £449 but when I asked they said it was £599. Of course I could be wrong about the model. Also I had said I wouldn't buy anything today so maybe they thought it was enough to just give me a "ball park" value. I like to think they would have checked a bit more carefully before taking any money off me.
I really like The Gallery. I bought my Warwick Infinity SN5 from there. When I asked about the price, I was quoted something higher than the website. When I asked the guy I was dealing with about the price on the website, he checked downstairs and/or the computer and said that price was fine. I honestly believe they just don't know all the prices off the top of their heads but they will not overcharge you deliberately. But I would just make sure you know what the website prices are before you hand over any money. I think they also like to try to match prices you might find elsewhere. Always worth mentioning if you have a quote from somewhere else.
9. You can't sell that! You might regret it.
10. What have I started? This was not what I intended! I understand that people who are passionate about their designs and products may react angrily when they feel they're being undermined or unjustifiably criticised - but this is too much. Both ACME and BFM have a reputation for being the best kept secrets in bass cabs, which is why I'm interested in knowing more. But it's hard to compare products you won't find in a shop, so I started this discussion to seek other people's views. I thought Bill's speculative charts were helpful - he did say they were speculative and that he'd prefer to see one produced by Andy himself. It's all gotten a bit out of hand.

12. Congratulations. The FNA Jazzman is one of the best sounding Warwicks around.
13. Dre uses Mike Elizondo amongst others. Very good player. Not all his stuff is sampled.
14. Aguilar DB680 pre / Eden WT1000 power amp.
15. I said talk to him first. Then beat him up if it doesn't work. Trust me - physical violence has its place. Sorry, I can't keep this beating thing going. I didn't mean it literally. ^_^
16. If he's an old friend, knock some sense into him. Beat him if you need to. But don't just explode at him one day. That won't give him a chance to remedy the situation. At the moment, he doesn't even realise something's not right.
17. That made me laugh out loud. Must tell my drummer that one.
18. I've been heavily depressed for 6 years now and the only thing keeping me from jumping has been music. You haven't told us if he's always been like this or just since his mum passed. But texting his girlfriend from the stage in between songs - wtf is that? In my band, you'd get a beating if you pulled something like that. And I love all the guys in my band.
19. We should do a spoof called Expert Village Idiots.
20. I wonder if Expert Village get slated a lot online. EDIT: This is what they think elsewhere.
21. I'm looking to invest in some new cabs and I'm trying to decide between a pair of ACME B2s and a BFM Omni15 Tallboy for my main gig rig. (For small gigs I'm looking to get a BFM Omni10.5 Crossfire.) The criteria so far seem to be transportability, price, perceived loudness and evenness of response (including how low the low frequencies go). Any advice on this one?
22. It helps playing with Stevie, where a lot of the tunes are played on 'the black keys', ie. Eb minor pentatonic.
23. Don't just sack him. Shoot him. In the empty place where his balls used to hang.
24. Received and replied. Provisionally sold to Gwilm pending all the usual.
