1.
Its all about Marty McFly on the drums!
"Hey kid, what'd you do, jump ship?... Well, what's with the life preserver?"
2.
I argue with my girlfriend (grade 8 theory) that it's possible to play any note with any chord and make it sound harmonious. She argues till she's blue in the face that you can't - despite me repeatedly asking her to pick any note / chord, watch me play a run or melody which includes said incongruous note over that chord, and then tell me it sounds out of key when it doesn't. But then, she don't know the blues
The problem is that she doesn't know enough theory. If she doesn't know the blues, then that's a HUGE gap.
3.
I wouldn't bother with any effects or a compressor & spend time learning to hold your bass so that you can play how you want to.
Exactly!
4.
Sunshine Of Your Love
I could play that song before I even had a bass. I got to back Pete Brown on it at his wedding at the same time a good friend of mine played Wembley Stadium. Great day, great riff, great song!
5. Chest Rockwell? That's a porn name if ever I've heard one!
6. Just reading up, I think Mackie brought an expensive and unsuccessful lawsuit against Behringer in the late '90s. After that, Behringer have had free reign to do whatever they like in the cheap clone market.
7. Point the amp towards the drummer and yourself - and not in the direction of the guitarist and singer.
8.
It's my fretting hand.
What angle do you have your fretting hand at? If you can keep the wrist completely straight and only bend at the elbow you'll feel less discomfort. Angle the bass neck up slightly to help get the angles right.
9. All theory is is developing an understanding of the relationship between notes. As non-percussion musicians, that's pretty f***ing important! Everyone develops their own approach to note choices. The better your understanding of the relationship between them, the more control you can have over your note choices. I can't see a quicker way of developing your understanding of the relationship between different notes than jazz harmony. I have the utmost respect for people who've managed to develop that sense without undertaking any form of study but there's no way I could develop that way. The one criticism I'd have of the way theory is taught at the moment is that there seems to be an overemphasis on harmony and an underemphasis on rhythm - and noone really thinks about melody much these days!
10. Welcome to the forums! If anyone at any point over the next two years tells you that you need anything by Sadowsky or Aguilar they are not your friend!
11.
it is the sound of the bass in the context of the music being played that attracts us NOT the sound itself
Couldn't agree more. As for the question about players with great sound but uninspiring playing, I can't think of any.
12.
Is it because their songs were 'better' or is there another reason ?
The songs on BSSM were better - and there was more for their audience to relate to, which probably includes race in an indirect way.

14. I can't be the only one who read the title as "Porno pictures"!
15. I'm not buying another bass just to meet Flea. The cap thing is a possibility - if it's a decent looking cap. Any pics of the caps?
16. Snarlin' Dogs Bootzilla Wah - does wah and distortion. Wah and distortion together sound great!
17. The dusty end is where the high notes are!
18. Why did you sell your power amp? Sell your cab as well now, I guess.
19. That's always a difficult one, CK - a band changing from one thing to another in an attempt to "get more serious". And the line between bandleader and dictator can be a fine one to tread! It obviously helps if everyone's happy for that one person to organise/run things.
20. I was hoping this might be a "how-to" thread. I was expecting some contribution from Mr Foxen and Joe Garcia.
21. For now, just try to work with him. As you get better, you'll be able to draw from a larger pool of musicians. That's the time to take your bass off mid-gig and whack him in the balls. Until then, keep your cool. EDIT: I was in a band called Jazzistic in '06. Some great musical chemistry with the bandleader (and with the guitarist from my other band who I roped into it). Eventually the guitarist and I couldn't get on with the bandleader anymore personally or professionally. Eventually that killed off the music.
22. Sometimes an octave pedal, distortion pedal and envelope filter will give you a decent approximation of a bass synth.
23. Indigo2 is a great venue! Great view/sound from every part of the venue!
