1.
Well I know someone who actually did it, rather than just daydream, with this website: http://www.pctechguide.com/ You may be interested to read how a 'hobby' project can evolve over the years into a full-fledged business, even though this was not the original intention: http://www.pctechgui...wpctechguidecom
I'm sure it can evolve, there are many examples and I know of some myself - but, as I said, Basschat isn't there, yet. Not quashing the idea, just reflecting on the current reality - if they did want to run a business I'd expect a lot more. The real product is the discussion, as befits the community roots of the forum. And we, the members, own that We don't do guides; we don't do lessons; we don't do journalistic reviews; we don't do apps. We do chat
2. Cheers guys, if ever local you're welcome to try
3.
A few more of my BC Rich Eagle, since it made an appearance in the other thread:
Contrast with the relative simplicity of my old NJ Eagle!
4. A few more of my BC Rich Eagle, since it made an appearance in the other thread: Showing the neckthrough... it's stained back, with the grain just visible if you try.
5.
In saying that there is no denying that some members are put off by the fees, everyone's situation is different and I'm not criticising anyone. I dunno if the fees system is the best one but I suppose you have to balance between making some cash, pissing off existing members and discouraging new users. It seems to me to be a reasonable solution.
In business improvement they have a saying: fail fast. It doesn't mean go and break things, and get yourself in a mess - it means try something and learn from it. That's what we're doing, to my mind, we're trying something new. We should ensure that we're learning from it, and understanding what impact the changes have - and I'll reiterate, people shouldn't feel they can't give feedback. Just hit the PM icon
6. Post-Download bump. Could do £350
7. I really enjoyed mine. The only better playing 5'er I encountered was the MTD Kingston Heir 5, and every time I recommend that bass to people I get blank faces. Literally, you're unlikely to find better Very similar basses, mind, nothing more than a fag paper between them. Risingson has my old one, and I'm sure he'd echo the glowing feedback above. Great bases.
8. Silverfoxnik has a P/P NJ. My old pink Eagle simply had a single passive P, none of the fancy electronics like my current one.
9.
If this is the real deal rather than an NJ ( which I expect are still pretty nice ) then I am deeply impressed . I spent many hours looking at these when I was growing up , and for bass players in the late 70's / early 80's they were one of the ultimate fantasy instruments . The only one I have ever played originally belonged to Geezer Butler and must have been the one I saw him playing with Sabbath in 1980 , and I was struck by how chunky the neck was on that one . Bernard Edwards had one , too . Even NASA can't work out what all the knobs and switches do on these . Tell us more .
It is indeed the real deal, though newer than you might expect - I believe this is a 2004, from the Custom Shop. Went to NAMM, to boot. But yeah, it's a BC Rich Eagle and US made. My dream would be to find a vintage, maybe even year of birth 1981, bass with the clear finish and Koa on show. The pick-ups are DiMarzios, and it sounds stunning. Neck is Precision fat, and it goes without saying that they don't quite make them like this any more! The best of the new ones is the Greg Weeks signature - twin Rockfield humbuckers is a bit of a departure, but it has an Aguilar Obp-3 pre-amp. Which they don't even advertise!
10. Today I mainly lived in the shade of my idols. Definitely need to put some more hours in to the practicing.
11.
How do we know they're just trying to make the forum self-sufficient? How do we know they're not working on a business plan to develop a web resource, build its value and then sell it to the highest bidder for millions, splitting the money and retiring?
I'm sure they daydream of such, but who doesn't? Pragmatically, not even close, however. Forums are good for community hubs, but the kit is out there - you're missing the killer app, the product, which you can sell. I've queried before whether they had any more corporate aims, and have always been referred back to the community. I should reference GuitarChat, which is a new project they're working on - even that is couched in community terms. I think there's an acceptance that you're not going to retire on the strength of something like this - but it might break even, or give a little money; but will certainly have big personal rewards, for those so inclined to see them. From all that I've seen or had said to me, they work regular jobs like most of us. I'm sure there has been ad income, and the donations, much like you see on many forums - but their pockets have made up the rest. I know they have their detractors, and I know we are sometimes left wondering about decisions - but I'm rather glad they put the place together, and given us that community. Sure, we're rude to each other; we gripe and groan; we re-neg on deals and cause all kinds of hassles - but it's not a bad place to chat about our common interest
12. Should have also added Patent Pending. Am not a skate punk fan, but the dance show swayed me
13. I'd positively encourage people to give Ped and Kiwi feedback. It's the only way to improve, after all. I do.
14. I'll echo the above, good show - but the greatness was lost in the wind! Sounded muffled on occasion. Rammstein were good also - but the best work was done in the Pepsi tent: Red Fang, Kvelertak, The Sword, Hang the Bastard, Newsted, Uncle Acid and the deadbeats. Sure, none of them had the stage props, but they brought a lot more energy than some of the bigger acts!
15. Thinking back, one of the best P/Js I ever played was the old Charvel 3B - it made a noise like a herd of rhinos at a Rammstein gig.
16.
i recently tried a couple of p/p basses , big sound very balanced, with loads of tonal options, try one if you can im officially converted, my new custom bass will have p/p pickups and a piezo bridge and iv got a feeling all my other basses will be for sale shortly after i recieve it.
Lot of time for the P/P format, this one is mine:
17. Back to the funk being in the fingers?
18.
In most cases the only time you would require a backup is when a string breaks. A far cheaper option is to carry a set of pre-cut spares in the gigbag/case. You can change a string and tune it up in 90 odd seconds.
I know I could... But I wouldn't. I don't know how others play, but we've a set of short-ish, pacey songs; and normally under instructions to not drag our feet! I just wouldn't want the time out, hence my carrying a spare.
19. My back up bass is the exact same bass, give or take - I play my '95 Stingray as first choice, and the second compartment of my Mono will have one of my other two Stingrays in it. Settings are consistent, no need to fiddle or worry if I have an issue. Unplug one, plug in another
20.
It's game over for making money on old basses now. The market went beserk and only the real old high quality, rare and all original stuff still holds value. But that's not to say that prices will continue to rise at the old rate even for those special ones. Late 70's Fenders carry a terrible reputation so can't go up too much, plus there are so many around. That said, there were some cool players basses from that era and if you like the bass, go for it all. You can always get your money back and perhaps a couple quid on top too if you're lucky.
I think you can still make your money. It just depends on when you want to make your money, and how much, that decides what course of investment you could pursue.
21.
I'd say a hi-end bass is £2000 starting... but that is not to say they will be the be-all and end-all even then.
Possibly even a little bit higher, to my own thinking. You could throw in a whole load of other descriptions, too: boutique, custom, etc. I'd always imagined a Sadowsky, Alleva, and those of that ilk as being "high-end", along with a whole sweep of the custom builds from Ritter, et al. Not sure how a Ritter would sit in the mix with my rock band, mind
22. Threads merged at OP request
23.
Cute!!!! Although I'm thinking of leaving here soon! I can't post anything without being shot down in flames It's been fun though
Ok, chief - I think we can all take that feedback, and be mindful. I think a lot of it is meant with a degree of affection, whether you'd recognise it or not - but if it's causing pain, then we should take note.
24. Try them all; pick the one you like; and then just pay whatever the priced on the tag is. If it's expensive, so be it. If it's cheap, you buy the beers with the change. There's an added dimension in that some people will bundle up perceived prestige in their liking - but that's ok. You have to have something that works for you, be it Kia or Audi, to borrow Chris' car analogy.
25. Enjoyed. I had pretty low expectations, as one might for this kind of thing - old legends coming back to relive their youth, we've seen it's like before. However, they were really good at Download when I caught them; and I'd only heard good things about the live show... perhaps Ozzie was showing his age, but musically they were tight. That probably sums this album up. Ozzie is perhaps the weak spot, and sometimes you're left wondering just how much work they put it into engineering some of the vocals; but the guitars and bass, really tight. Geezer's sound is superb, to my ears anyway. So, yeah, a pretty credible edition to the discography!
