  1. Glad you managed to sort some strings out for your violin bass.
  2. The tension is not bad at all on these string as these are made for Hofner but overseas under licence. Intonation wise they can be a little off but at this price for the strings, I guess there is a bit of a trade off.
  3. Good looking bass you have there I hope it gives you, many happy years of playing and ownership. I have a 1964 500/1 which like you my 34" scale basses were starting to hurt my left hand, so I brought out my old Hofner & it is easier to play and yes I to use a pick. I didn't want to waste money on an expensive set of flatwounds to begin with just in case, I ended up putting the Hofner back in it's case. So I bought the Hofner HCT flatwounds to see if I liked them & thee not bad I think I paid about £23 on eBay for them. I probably will get a set of LaBella Beatle Bass strings but for now, these will do plus I like the green silk ends.
  4. Been having a few sharp pains in my left hand recently and while not really sure, what is causing it but playing a short scale bass does help ease that pain a little. I recently got my '64 Hofner 500/1 back out of it's case when I need, that break from my Precision bass plus the light weight helps as well.
  5. Yeah it wasn't easy at first but eventually, it does get easier.
  6. There was a black CT 500/1 I always liked the look of that one.
  7. Back in the mid 80's you could pick up a 60's 500/1 for, less than a new Squier or Tokai bass. I picked up 2 during this time a 1964 Violin bass which cost £175 which, I sill have to this day, & a 1964 Senator bass which cost me £150. I let the Senator go for a new MIM Fender Jazz in the 90's not one of my best ideas. My friend had the CT Cavern bass and it looked really good but I'm, amazed how much the German made basses cost these days it's like Fender CS money. The best £175 I ever spent on a bass guitar.
  8. I have the exact bass including the year, and they are an excellent bass to own & play. I have Dunlop flats on mine 45 - 105 strung top loaded, didn't want to chance going string through.
  9. I first saw this picture in 1980 my Mum had the Norman Hunter Beatles book, which I still have I didn't know what it was but I loved the look of it anyway. Fast forward 8 yrs I've started to learn the bass guitar back in '87 & luckily in, November '88 I found a 1964 500/1 for £175 it was mine all mine.Fast forward to 2022 it's still my guilty pleasures & my most cherished possession.
  10. I hope Rob gets the best treatment & makes a good recovery.
  11. Just binged watched Pistol over this BH weekend and I was thinking, did Glen Matlock ever get his basses that were stolen back?
  12. This has been with me since 13/11/88 many have come and gone since then.
  13. My 2014 Am.Std Precision is the one that gets played the most, even unplugged it's the one that gets picked up to play on. Considering I bought it new in Jan 2015 unseen & untried I ended up with an amazing bass. The overall feel of the neck is so smooth and those CS pickups & the fact that it, weighs 8lb 4.2 oz. defiantly makes it a keeper & it's strung with Dunlop 45-105 flatwounds.
  14. Absolutely stunning collection you have there, enjoy them all 😎.
  15. IIRC the Encore E83 was made of ash blocks glued together, like the Sunn Mustang basses were. The E84 was either a 2 or 3 piece body which not only looked good, but the hardware was gold instead of chrome.
  16. If the bass has a sentimental attachment then wanting to upgrade it, is down to the owner & their wallet. Encore did a E84 model bass which had a natural ash body, a few people bought these and upgraded the neck to a Fender version.
  17. MY 1964 Hofner Violin Bass bought in Nov 88, & has been with me ever since. This is my most cherished possession 😍.
  18. First one I'd go with Aria the second one maybe Greco or Univox.
  19. Loved the 80s & the basses from that era, enjoy your bass 😎.
  20. Really glad the bass was OK, it's a stunner. Hope you have many years playing it 😎
  21. That's in good condition for it's age.
  22. Here is my 1989 S9 MIK Squier Precision with a nice gloss neck and, licensed by Schaller machine heads & a heavy plywood body. It was bought by my Girlfriend twice for me in 1998, & again in 2008 when I was lucky enough to get it back from my friend who I sold it to. It now resides in a padded gig bag in the loft as it doesn't get played much &, I'm not a fan of the thinner Squier bodies.
