1.
And what happened to the MM Jazz
Thanks Mike...[Top Ten hit]...how could I have forgotten that???!!! Here ya go...Marcus Miller Jazz, lovely bass, well made, sounds great soloed but got lost in the mix so it had to go...
2. Eh up Chris - our drummer's from Wigan!!
3. First - my 2 band Ray (couple of years old) ...and this lovely, extremely versatile Sterling. It has a Nordstrand pup. ...a lovely back... ...and a matcking headstock.. Sorry I had to split the thread, it wouldn't let me post it all in one lump.
4. ...continued Then...I went to the Bash and made the mistake of trying PaulC's Bongo - it was love at first pluck. When he put it up for sale a few weeks later, I bit his hand off... When I picked it up, I saw this on a stand in Paul's living room and bought that too... Should've hung on to the Bongos - brilliant basses, very versatile and they sound fantastic....but I always wanted a USA Lakland and I swapped the two of 'em for this droolsome beauty - a USA 4-94 ...but I was petrified of scratching it and got nervous anytime anyone went near it, which is daft. This was a breathtaking instrument in every respect but it was too good for a goomah like me. So I sold it and bought two Lakland Jo5s on the proceeds thinking I could still play 5ers. These were lovely basses. I quickly learned that I wasn't comfortable singing and playing a 5 at the same time so I sold them and went back to basics - a USA Jazz followed ...and an '83 Precision. ....but I got pain in my hand/arm when I played the Jazz with its skinny neck and the other lads in the band didn't like the sound of the P, so I sold both of 'em. Using the proceeds I bought two basses that I really love playing and they do the job beautifully. These are the basses that I'm currently using, they've been in my possession longer than any other basses I've owned and I haven't had a GAS attack since I got them. See Part 3.
5. It's a while since anyone's taken the piss out of me and I think its time for some more. Nicking MikeH's anthology idea, I thought I'd post some pics of all the basses I've owned in the two years since taking up the hallowed instrument. I also thought that it might be helpful for other noobies who like me, don't know what they want or need if I give my reasons for selling 'em. I sold a Telecaster and bought this USA P and a Trace combo on the proceeds ... Being a girly guitarist, the thick neck gave me pains in my fretting arm, so I swapped the P for this USA Jazz Deluxe.. I was happy with the Jazz and thought I needed a second bass so I bought this lovely Spector NS2000 off my mate mikeh... I then bought this, because I liked the case... I hated the Status - sounded awful though my TE rig so I sold it to mikeh who had it refinished and then sold it. By now I was getting cocky and thought I'd switch to 5 strings so I swapped the Jazz for this stunningly beautiful Spector Euro5.. By now, I'd joined a classic rock band so I thought I'd get another 5, in came this Lakland 55-01 with NTMB preamp, lovely bass.. I was getting even cockier now and thought I could hack a fretless, so I bought this lovely Yammy... ...but I couldn't play it - plus the fretboard was too dark to see the lines on a dark stage. Shame really. I sold the Yammy and bought this lovely 88 Ray with the most figured neck I'd ever seen... Nice bass....but got cramp in my right forearm whenever I played it (crap technique). My arm completely locked during one gig and I couldn't play any more that night - good job it was during the last number eh? I swapped the Ray plus some money for this truly awesome USA 75 Reissue Jazz Special Edition... Still get goosebumps when I look at the pic of that bass - should never have sold it...big mistake. Anyway, I bought this Jap P to go with it - I had £1000 in my pocket and went out to buy the best P I could find. I tried about 10 USA/Mex/Jap Ps and this was the best of the lot so I paid £340ish and earned many brownie points.. see Part 2
6. Only done one deal with Steve, but it was a pleasure to do business with him. Steve has magical healing powers too - his Stingray has been in my possession longer than any other bass I've owned and I've not had a single GAS attack since. Incredible!
7. I just played this bass and it's a real beauty. Mike, I think this one's the best you've had in the time I've known you and if you don't mind, I'm gonna copy your anthology idea when I have two days spare to do the post!
8. hello mate, we generally charge around £600 for a wedding - a bit less for smaller functions or if we know them.
9. Oy Matt - why no tongue?
10. cool Matt
11. Dave, when I had the LMII, I used this - only £10 from BQ and the bubble wrap was free. Twas a perfect fit and had enough room for two cab leads.
12. I want to play like this guy but I'd need a bigger box... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B5kPYCqGC4...ted&search=
13. I've been playing bass for two years now, and although I'm no Stanley Clarke, I wouldn't be fazed if anyone here turned up at one of our gigs. I'm taking lessons and practice for about an hour every day and I think I've got to a reasonable standard but then I see this (posted elsewhere on here by a fellow BCer) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6wG71TR2_0 ...and I am genuinely astounded by the dexterity and musicianship. Then I think to myself..'if I keep the lessons up and practice hard, maybe one day...'. But then reality sets in - I'll never be that good on bass, cos if I'm honest with myself, I don't really aspire to it. I'm happy just fumbling away on a Saturday night and going home with £60 in my back pocket stinking of smoke. How good do you want to be?
14. Absolutely love it - very Claptonesque, have a bump on me.
15. Love that Spector - luvly stuff fella.
16. Very nice Peter - where did you get the scratchplate for the Joe?
17. 2 band EQ Stingray Sterling
18.
Digression is the stuff of fora though, don't you find?
Good point stewblack and long may it continue.
19.
Even tho this could catastrophically affect my business, I still wholly support the government.
Thanks for the replies fellas but I wasn't really concerned with the health side of things, more to do whether business had dropped off to the point where pubs stopped booking bands.
20. Calling all Scottish & Irish bassists - just curious what effect if any, has the smoking ban had in Ireland / Scotland on your gigs. Bigger or smaller audiences etc? We normally have to turn work down but it's gone a bit quiet on the enquiry front and we were wondering if pubs / clubs are hanging back to see what happens when the ban kicks in on 1st July. Any comments / experience?
21.
Where can I get an Epiphani UL 410 cab and how much am I looking at for one? Just out of curiosity as I am after something to replace my Hartke cab, as its far too heavy - fancy a nice light cab....
There's one for sale on here now Luke - it's an 8ohm one. 22. I used to have this and it was very light and very loud... But now I've got this, and this blows my last rig out of the proverbial water and overall, the weight feels about the same..
23. Absolutely droolworthy Joe, stunning.
24.
How about some pics of them live in action?
I'll see what I can do!
25. Peter - you're far more patient than I would be. If I was in the same position, I would demand a refund or a new amp and I'd give them a deadline - like 3 days to comply before taking further action.
