1. Half expected a support band to ask to use my rig recently...and I would have been open to it as the arrangements for the gig was all ours and we sort of knew the band, and I would have brought a spare amp along ..had he phoned me to ask, but there was no way I was going to 'hire' it out on the night. As it happens, he didn't ask, but all it would have needed was a courtesy phone-call prior, in this case. In general, I carry my kit so others can carry theirs...
2. You need to put more time in.. Either rest on the B or E..as applicable, or your left hand fingering needs to be cleaner. As for slap, a ringing B is no more of a problem that a ringing E... again, your left hand should be able to do it. It may also just be a question of re-adjustment to a 5 and you need to sort your anchor points.. Time and practice should do it.
3. [sup]Love to catch up with you Pete.. Bands sounds great so will keep an eye out[/sup] [sup]All the best and congrats making 15 yrs.[/sup]
4. For £300, best bang for buck, IMO, is TE, second-hand... IF you don't mind the weight. As it is older stuff... most TE rigs have done a zillion gigs... I think it would be better spec'd, prob better made...last the course, do the job and weigh a ton... but you can't have it all....
5. I like him these days as a sideman..but wasn't knocked out with his sound at the Prince's Trusts gala at the Albert hall, from the TV recordings. Having said that... the mix wasn't at all good for most of the players either... Joss Stone was something else tho... and great band vibe in general..IMO
6. I can't see that the Badass would offer anything over the MM bridge....and as for the hassle..!! IMO, The MM was an upgrade of the P-bass and the chance to put little things..like the bridge, right.. It later became a firm favourite and industry fave in its own right... I can't see the Badass being an upgrade but I can see it making a mess..!!
7. My home insurance specifies items upto £1500 the don't have to be defined..but above that they do. I am working on the assumption that each of my basses could be replaced at £1500 if I went SH... and the same applies to amps etc I have this discussion every year with my Ins compaay as Underwriters change the goal posts frequently and you basicall get a new contract every year. It takes some getting on top of..for sure.. I have the same hassle with Winter Sports..what was covered one year..suddenly gets a few exceptions the next..!!!
8.
I thought the Vox set up was for when he was playing guitar, again more in line with the Vox / 60's British music image. So if you liked that sound for your own set-up, wouldn't you also want to have that sound coming out the PA for the audience to hear? Otherwise why bother!
You might do..which is where the DI would come in...either pre or post. They would have spent a lot of time on it in pre production anyway.
9. He also seems to have Vox cabs up there as well...which is probably a nod to his historical image. I doubt they have much use though. The primary role for cabs on stage is for image, personal stage monitoring, sponsorship etc etc ... and he likes that sound from that config. Of course, he is going to have bass sound all over the stage from various monitors/fills but maybe he likes the initial source sound the Boogies give him so he would be Di'd to the PA and monitor mixes and he would get take a bleed to his own amp set-up.
10. Assume you have no warranty..and no warranty will likely pay out if you mention that story..that is wanton abuse, so hand in pocket time, probably. I would talk to Ampegs distributor about there costs to replace recone the chassis... this will prob be the most expensive. Ampeg..and other makers aren't likely to share the info on the speaker used...and it would probably be a speaker known to people..but it may be badged for Ampeg alone.... or made to their specs from a known model line.. can you get a look at it and see if there are any giveaway markings on it.. even who made it...probably Eminence...? The problem with putting replacement chassis in a cab is if you don't know the spec and how/if it is tuned, the new speaker might run like a dog and it is such a lot of chance...so you do need someone here to pipe up and point you in the right direction...and help them with any other details with which they could narrow the choice down. Patience..I am sure someone will have more pertinent info soon
11. This would have me fuming... and you can see many many threads about gear share here. You can try billing the guy...but you also need to know what speaker they used in that cab so contact the maker in the first instance. It is likely to be a bespoke chassis for that maker so maybe some guys here can match the specs and point you in the right direction with the driver. Can you see what is printed on the chassis..? They will be along soon..hopefully.
12. Sometimes speakers go open circuit and the only way to know that is to measure it. There may be no other clues at all. No coil rubbing, no damage to the cone..etc etc ..!! The way to do this might just be too much power through a chassis which I thought was unlikely or the speaker might have been a fault in waiting. Mine was covered by warranty of up to a year from purchase. If it was open circuit though, the speaker wouldn't show any life at all. IMO.
13.
Hey guys you've cheered me no end. Just 4 hours to go ... Davo
Good luck..but why worry? The band isn't concerned so much as they casually asked you if you played bass...you know the set and they aren't having kittens at the prospect of a new untried bass player. If they aren''t concerned why should you be...??
14.
Nice choice Paul. Got love Stevie and the packet of three. Saw them a few times in a pub down Finchley way.
Yep...played on their bill just before he died... He still had IT even then.
15. Depends on the gig...... on a lot of dates you will be expected to solo and be expected to carry it off. If it is a typical jazz date where they do the rounds of a classic...you'll likely get a solo in every other song, almost...and you might only have seen heard the song/theme through the first melody verse which will set the whole thing up or work off a chart. The band leader will turn round to you and give you a couple of bars notice and you get a sequence of verse and/or chorus..depending what the other guys take... the bass isn't likely to be first solo up, so you get a little help here After you have been through that type of exposure... you'll have a few tricks that you can throw in once a set in your regular band if the singer decides he wants to introduce you. I never practise anything... I just go with the mood of the track we are playing and come up with something. This should give you decent chops..!! as its live or die/sink or swim..and if you fluff too many you'll not really make the gig that often.
16. Depends which rig I am using, I always..of late..have the other one set up in the living room as I tend to play along with the TV set-up or CD's I have a music room upstairs but can't be arsed running the kit upstairs ..and the downstairs set-up works better anyway.
17. I find it strange that the venue is listening to the pubs..but there is a tie-up I can't really elaborate on, so the venue has to heed the pubs opinions...even though it might sound somewhat deterimental to their new venture. We are conscious of playing the same town too often which is why we generally only play one pub per town. The nearest other regular date we currently do is a village about 6 miles away and a town 10 miles away. We get about 3 gigs a year from those each... so maybe 9 in total in a region that might have 15-20 music venues. To give you a sense of the geography etc The venue is fine with our showings so far..and the numbers that have attended. It just seems to me that we will have to blow out the pub/pubs that are making this an issue. Or the venue will have to concentrate on out of town acts... and with that, it could mean the budget goes silly and/or little known acts...subjective... pull only a 100... which makes the venture dicier..???? But if it works out like that, I'll put the word out and come looking for a few of you guys..!!
18.
Markbass and Epifani is a match made in Heaven
I would tend to agree with them being a good match.... once you get to grips with some Epi cabs..(thinking 12's here) tendency to wallow a tad..!!! I don't think either are outstanding in their own right ( don't have too much time on the 10" cabs, tbf ) but the match up is greater than the sum parts, which is exactly the right way around, IMO.
19. Plus the fact that a U.K Take That tour would draw and pay for the best around... so the band is going to be great come regardless of the up front talent. I don't get the 'legendary' status though....vocally they are very average but have some good songs in the back catalogue. They must have hit the nail right on the head and I do prefer them to the other bands like Westlife or Boyzone or whoever..!!
20. Saw it,,,what I want to know is...how come it is acceptable for the camera man to have his own copies stashed at home... and he says he has others..!! Homework...???
21.
We've had this request from a few promoters, I don't think it's unreasonable really - they don't want 'your' audience to have seen you the weekend before in the pub down the street because they won't turn up again the weekend they've booked you. Not playing any other venues for a year though? That's mental. What are they offering you in return?
It isn't the venue that is complaining...it is the pubs/pubs.... and it is quite a close run town so this is being entertained by the venue even though they have invested in a LOT of stuff to make the venue work. It should be a showcase for the local bands. We played the only two pubs that we do in the parish.....one in town about 3-4 weeks prior, and the village pub 1 weeks before. We pulled 300 in the venue after that..and we would say the pubs did fine on our night there as well...ie, not notiecable down on numbers. I would have thought..and I would feel the same, that the venue took the bigger risk paying us a function type fee and putting up a ticket price against the pubs. People can see us for nothing in the pubs. and £8-10 a ticket for a two band line-up is quite an outlay for the venue..!! It all comes down to us probably having to blow out the pub/pubs...which is a real shame. And I kind of bulk at them declaring that they have 'groomed' us...!!!! I don't recall them at any rehearsals or band meets ..
22.
I will agree not to play at any other venues in the vicinity if they agree not to book any other bands. Or if they pay us a retainer. Either option works for me.
ha ha .... we have a lot of trouble getting minimum free from this pub as it is...
23.
Hell no! I understand that the venues want to stay in competition with each other and all that, but at the end of the day the more gigs you do the better imo - if there's a pub in your town you haven't played yet (out of courtesy or whatever else) there could be god knows how many fans just waiting to be alerted to your existence. Not only that, I fail to understand why a band might be detracting trade from a particular pub by playing somewhere else - maybe that pub should try and get one up with promotion or something? Plus, with lots of people moaning about the lack of a music scene these days (especially in my area), to limit yourself to one pub in a given town only helps to ensure the continuation of a crappy music scene, whereas if you rotate all the venues round, you'll give other bands a chance and help to create the sense of a living, moving local scene. Is it a common practice? The only time either of my bands ever get asked that is when we play Academy Unsigned in Manc. So luckily it's not common in this part of the country AFAIK.
In my home town, I counted 7 venues with music one sat night...and in general I think the scene in the county is vibrant... I would probanly say there are too many bands and too many gigs, all things considered. We actually played a ticketed venue in the town and did very well, confirmed by the venue as their best so far in the 6 months or so they have been running bar opening night..-which we also happened to do albeit with another popular band who don't many local dates... I think we gave them space ....but still they weren't happy. It will be an ongoing probrlem and our choice is to pull out of the pubs or pubs that feel this way... We can expect maybe 2-3 ticketed gigs at the venue at function rates as opposed to 4-5 pub rates gigs. from an all-orund gig experience, this is a no brainer...even without taking the money into things. I have to say..I am not that keen on ticketed gigs where the onus is on the band to draw and make the money... it can be quite a pressure...but it seems like we are being pushed into binning pub gigs in that town...and we only do the one pub atm..and plus one about 6 miles outside. That is as close as we get... I'm am bemused as of their argument tbh..!! As I say..it is not as through the music nights clash...!!
24.
On the theatre / art centre / ticket venue circuit it's common. On the pub scene, less so... there's a couple of 'music' pubs up here that politely ask you not to play at the pub over the road for a while either side of playing there. Depending on the circumstances, I think it's a reasonable request.
Have to say..not entirley against it myself if that venue does indeed offer something over and above....but we'd come to that conclusion anyway and wouldn't need to be told much after the fact. I can't go into specifics but it was pubs telling a venue that they have 'groomed certain' bands locally and now ticketed gigs were taking away trade from these pubs. We suspect one of the complainants is one who gives us 4-5 gigs a year and we have to hassle like hell to get a decent rate. For that reason alone, we were thinking it couldn't work for us much longer.. As far as I know...in fact, I am pretty certain..the respective music nights are not even on the same nights of the week.. I wonder how ungrateful we might seem to be... having been groomed this last year even though most of us have been around for 25 years plus or so..!! ha ha !!!
25. Would you allow a venue in a given town to dictate whether you could/should play elsewhere in that town as you might be perceived as taking away trade from them... ?? This is becoming more prevalent around here and it has been a tactic from one or two pubs who think they are the better places to play...might even advertise themselves as so and so's premier music venue/pub/club etc ..so they will offfer dates as long as you only play there in any given year. We have often been asked this, particuarly if we are new to that venue ... and our thinking is that we should avoid that place and play at their comptetition ha ha.. but there are only so many places that you would consider playing in any one town, tbh... We do generally pick the better one for us..and stick to it... so it wouldn't kill us and we could end up doing it anyway... but it needs to be our choice rather than the venues stipulation. Is this practice unusual..???
