Basschaters I’m really getting into GarageBand on my Mac, (stuffing around with the effects and EQ) editing numbers that I record via a Zoom recorder at our band practice sessions. I’m now getting to a point where I want to do bit more and am looking for a few pointers on what Audio recording software and hardware other Basschaters use and why? I’m not sure, that GarageBand is the way forward, I hear lots of other software being referred to on this site, and perhaps a different brand would be better? Anyway it’d be interesting to get other Basschaters to let us (me) all know what they get up to on the recording side of things – some of the stuff I hear on this very site, done with imagination and low budget, has been really very good quality – how do you do it chaps? I've spoken to the recording engineer who did the origional recordings for us, he has agreed to give me the files and stems - this is what he emailed me: [i]The files are already wav format so you're all good there. They are all in one folder labelled 'audio files'. Ordering them by size on the pc/mac will group them into song order. I.e all files of the same size will make up one take and should be dropped into your software as a group.[/i] I'll just have to ask him what he means by "[i]all files of the same size will make up one take and should be dropped into your software as a group[/i]". I thought I'd have to create a 'Real Instrument track for each file (i.e 6 files of the same size - create 6 Real Instrument tracks in the time line) then drop each file onto an individual track. Hi Chaps Does anyone know if it’s possible to get Pro Tools files into GarageBand for editing / mixing, and if so how? I have a Mac with GarageBand and access to some Pro Tools files of our band from a studio recording session - I'd like to edit, overdub and mix them (play around with them) to get some experience. I’ve only just started playing around with GarageBand (good fun making up backing tracks to play against and add bass / vocals etc.), so my knowlwdge of these things is pretty ‘limited’. Oggy

Hi Chaps, Our drummer bought a Zoom H4n a wee while ago, couldn't drive it so gave it to me to have a go at. Used it for the first time last week at our regular Thursday night practice session, the only setting I did was set it to sterio mode, mount it on a mic stand about 2 mtrs in front of us and make sure that the volume bar didn't go to the limits (too often anyway). Result from the very first number tried:[attachment=81385:GFMB_260511_BU.mp3] IMHO, not bad, considering it's the first go - cut off the bickering before and after the number using GarageBand. Looks as though this bit of kit will come in handy. I'll give it a go with the extra two external mic inputs, should get more control and be able to do a wee bit of mixing - that'll be fun. Oggy

Hi Chaps I've recently come into possession of a Zoom Handy Recorder H4n, our drummer (the only one with any money in the band) bought it a few weeks ago but doesn't have the time to play with it and get it sorted out so he's handed it over and I'll be doing the business with it. I'm getting to grips with it and think I understand enough to be able to record at our rehearsal sessions and perhaps gigs. The beast came with a software disk (Cubase LE5, OEM Version) to enable editing / enhancement of the recorder files but I have a problem! I have a Mac Mini that I bought some three and a half years ago the operating system software on this Mac is designated at 'Tiger Mac OS X 10.4.11', apparently the Cubase LE5 software needs 'Leopard Mac OS 10.5.0' minimum to run the Cubase. I've been told that there are some free versions on Cubase available on the internet that will allow me to do a limited amount of editing / enhancing of the files from the Zoom on my Mac and will run on the older operating system - I hope that some of you guys may have some pointers to give me on this. I can get files from the Zoom onto the Mac just by plugging the device into a USB and they play OK on iTunes and can be stored wherever I want to put them on the Mac so I guess that any piece of music editing software will be able to recognize them and allow me to manipulate / edit them? I'd be grateful for some advice on the above, I don't really want to go spending loads of cash upgrading my Mac OS just so that I can use the Cubase LE5 software. Thanks chaps. Oggy

Being compared to early Dr Feelgood is a compliment in my book – Yardbirds / Feelgood / Bluesbreakes / and all those early British R&B bands are what I was brought up on – love em to bits. Sorry about the three tracks all being of a similar vibe, the missing two are Walk In My Shadow and Coin Operated Love, I didn’t know I was going to run out of space until I did – I can take down these three and add the other two or, better still use one of those hosting sites you mentioned, which one would you recommend? – Ease of use being the main criteria. We’ll be recording another 5 tracks, when we have this first five sorted out – I’ll try and get the other two to agree that I’m Your Witchdoctor will be one of them. Oggy

I get it - at last an explanation of what compression does and how it can help that even I can understand, thank you BOD2. I only read this post yesterday and was blown away at how well the subject was put across; I immediately went to the ‘For Sale – Effects’ section looking for something suitable, I’ve spotted a few - I feel a purchase coming on. By happy coincidence - I was in a recording studio last night with our lead guitarist, overdubbing some vocal tracks onto the instrumental tracks we did a few weeks ago, I was telling him about this compression explanation – he stuck his hand into one of his gig bags and pulled out a ‘BOSS Compression Sustainer CS-3 stomp box’ and said I could have it for free if I wanted it – 'gift horses, mouths' and the like so I took it . I know it’s probably designed for guitar but I’ll try it with my Bass anyway. Thanks again BOD2 for a really informative and well written explination. Oggy
