1. My thanks to GregBass, JapanAxe and neepheid for you advice, appreciated. It's been a decade or two since I had anything to do with PCB's or soldering irons, I come from an era of valve computers and very early OC44 and OC72 transistor circuits , anyone remember IN4148 diodes and 1/4W resistors . I'll have a look on the Maplin site and see if I can get a wee bit of kit - Avo type measuring device and soldering iron + solder. I do remember doing a bit at college, back in the late 60's / early 70's, using both Log and Lin potentiometers, during my apprenticeship. Could be a bit of fun to get back into a bit of tinkering. Thanks again Chaps. Oggy
2. Hi Guys I've recently bought a 32" Medium Scale Japanese Jazz Bass from another member of this site - I absolute love it . To me it looks great, feels comfortable to play and sounds great - what more could I want? Weeeeeellllllll - I have one minor gripe, not a train smash, that I hope some of you 'more techi' members will be able to advise / help me with. Both of the Volume Pots only work for the last 20% of the full turn. The best way I can explain it is to liken the volume pot to the figures 1 - 10 on a clock face. With the marker at 1 there is no volume from the pickup (I'd expect this), I have to turn the pot up to 8 to get any signal / sound coming through, turning the pot from 8 - 10 gives a rapid rise in volume / signal. It's as though whatever the resistance value of the pot is between 8 - 10 should be what's applied to the pot on a gradual gradient from 1 - 10. The above happens on both the front and rear pup volume control pots. The tone control pot behaves exactly as it should, with a gradual tone change right through the full turn. Any ideas?? Thanks Oggy
3.
Nordstrand and Aero make replacement pickups for the Mustang if that's of any interest: http://www.aeroinstr...om/mustang.html http://www.premiergu...nt_Pickups.aspx
Hi ikay You were quick off the mark - well done you. It's not something that ever really crossed my mind - changing the pickups for higher output ones. I sort of go with what is fitted as standard on the beast I buy and I have to say that I've been more than happy with the performance of the pickups and the amps I've used, a few millivolts either way isn't going to worry me much as long as I get the sound I want. Thanks for the info on the sites though, there might be other members who really do want to swap out their pups. Oggt
4.
I've had a few jap fenders and found them lacking in the pickup department, in comparison to other fenders anyway, I had a 70 RI precision and a 66 RI jazz from Japan that were a lot lower output than similar Mexican offerings, it's a simple fix with a new pickup but obviously not many people make mustang pickups.
Hi cocco You're probably right, I have no experience of an American or Mexican Mustang Bass so I'm not in a position to compare pickup output voltages. I would have thought that turning up the volume / gain on the amp might compensate for lower input signal strength. I would be interesting to compare - I think , not sure why though. Oggy
5.
What's the pickup like in it? I always find jap fenders to be lacking in the trousers.
Hi cocco Difficult one! I suppose it depends on what you play it through, what flavour strings are on, what effects you use, what volume your playing at and how your amp graphics are set up, basically we are all just manipulating a sine wave that's produced by a metal string cutting through a magnetic field. For the last few years I've really only played the Mustang and a Gibson SG re-issue bass, the best description I can give you is that I find the Gibson deep and a tad muddy and the Mustang deep and punchy - but that's down to the way I set up all the variable mentioned above. I tend to favour flat-wounds so I recon that has loads to do with the sound produced - no real 'twang' to speak of. I have had a set of round-wounds on the mustang in the past but swapped them back to flats - a bit to lively for my taste. When I'm practicing at home I use either a Tascam Bass Trainer - that has loads of effects and bass cut / boost settings so I can get some pretty fantastic sounds out of the Mustang. I also use a Roland Micro Cube Bass FX amp to play a bit at home (when the missis is out that is - It can get a bit loud) that again have every effect known to man on-board so - 'pick your sound'. When I'm playing out I have a few setups that I use - any combination of: 15" Barefaced Cab, Ashdown Mini 15", Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 and Ashdown EVO II 300, I don't use effects although I'm toying with the idea of an Octaver for this new Jap Jazz I've acquired (Thank you Pestie). I like the bass to sound punchy but deep (I don't pop and slap, it's not what I play so I'm not sure you even could on these short scale basses) and in honesty I've had no complaints, except from one punter at a pub gig who said he felt like the bass was punching him in the chest. I've played in three piece bands now for several years so the bass does have a lot to do to fill the sound out, both the Mustang and the Gibson have done the job admirably. So - in answer to your question: No she's not laking in the trouser department - perhaps a few other Jap Mustang (or just Jap Fender) owners would care to comment???????? Oggy
6. Mmmmmmmmmmmm. What with 'cameltoe' telling me I'm "selling the wrong one" and Mike 'Pestie' giving the bass such a writeup - perhaps I should keep it under the bed for 'emergencies' . Thank you Mike for your kind comment - you're a Gentleman. I'm having a great time with the Jap Jazz I bought from you and really looking forward to doing the course at the end of the month - I mustn't tell the grandchildren though. Oggy
7. Hi Basschaters A few weeks back I sold a ( almost brand new) Squire 'Medium Scale' Tele Bass to Pestie at the Bass Bash, lost a few quid but hey ho that's the way it goes my own fault for buying in haste. Pestie bought a couple of Basses along to the Bass Bash to show me, a Medium Scale Precision style that he made himself (very nice it is) and a Jap Medium Scale Jazz you guessed it 'Love at first sight, feel , play'. I resisted the temptation for about 2 minutes then made my intentions known to Pestie "one day that Jazz would be mine". Over a couple of weeks and a few emails back and forth, money was transferred and - yes - she's now mine - "All Mine". Now to pay for this lustful purchase I have to part with my trusty and well loved CIJ Mustang Short Scale Bass and the box she lives in and a really nice leather / suede strap that I bought in Copenhagen. When I bought the Mustang, 3 years ago on this very site, she had a red body and white perloid scratch plate - very surfin' band look. I had her refurbished by a luther in Milton Keynes called Andy Viccers, see http://www.andyviccarscustom.co.uk/. Andy did a really nice job on her plus re-finished the body in nitrocellulose 'Vintage White' and fitted a new tortoise shell scratch plate - less surfin' and more blues. The case is a genuine 60's American Mustang Bass Case, complete with scratched, bumps, slight rust and all the knocks you would expect on a case this old - it does the job as well as it always did and has no special treatment from me - the older it gets the more Mojo it acquires. I've checked the serial number of the Mustang against the 'guitar dating sites', it tells me that she was manufactured between 2004 and 2005 - check it out for yourself. I've currently got the action set pretty low and a set of flats on her, I'll supply a set of rounds with her if she sells in case that's a preference. I treat my stuff with respect and look after it so should this sell, whoever gets it will be getting a Bass that's been looked after, in extremely good condition and is well set up. Anyway I'd like £550 for the Bass, Case, Strap and the alternative set of strings. I've attached some photos. I would prefer a local sale or 'halfway meet', couriers give me the chills. I have to say that this is a reluctant sale, it was either the Mustang or the Gibson SG re-issue shortie, I'm still not really sure I'm selling the right one . 8. Sold Mike a Tele Bass a couple of weeks ago - handed it over, and met Mike in person, at the Bass Bash on 1st June in Hatfield. Great to meet up with and an absolute pleasure to do business with him. I also met another member who had bought a Bass from Mike, he was also really pleased with his purchase from Mike and the buying experience. 'I hope to meet up with you again soon Mike - I'd vouch for you anytime. Thanks Tim (Oggy)
9. Please read first post above - PRICE DROP Bump.
10. Hi Wil I really liked it. For some reason, probably the synth sounding whatever in the background, it reminded me of the Cars - In my book that's a compliment, I hope you feel the same. Can you tell me / us a bit more about your band lineup, the recording process and songs - who, what, where, when? Do you guys have a web site? Nice one. Oggy
11. Hi Mike I've just sent the dimension in a PM to you. Tim (Oggy)
12. PM replied to - I'll send you the dimension this evening. Oggy
13. SOLD SOLD Very little Interest at £290 so I've taken off another £50 - All as described below for just £240. Any takers? I'd lusted after a Medium Scale Bass (32") for well over a year, so in January of this year I treated myself to one of these: http://www.fender.co...gerboard-black/ it cost me £290. I then immediately bought a case to keep it in good condition and to protect it, one of these: http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/B002WDBC28 it cost me £44. I'm not a fan of round-wound strings so had the bass set up, at a cost of £30, and a set of La Bella flat-wound Deep Talkin' 760FS Standard - Flat wound 45 65 85 105 strings fitted, bought from this web site: http://www.stringbus...GS%20LA%20BELLA they cost me £36. I then bought a quality wide black leather strap, to hang it on from a music shop in Barnet, at a cost of £22. Sooooooo - in total I spent £422. Not bad for a really nice Bass, set up really well, great strings and quality case; the problem was - Aggggghhhhh - I just can't take to it, it feels way to big to me after playing short scale basses for so long. It went to one rehearsal session in Uxbridge and a couple of hours playing at home - it then went into it's case and only came out again today so that I could take some photo's to advertise it on this site. By the way - the lead guitarist and drummer in our band think I'm stark raving bonkers for wanting to sell it - what do they know. I'll be sticking with my Fender Mustang and Gibson SG Re-issue short scale basses from now on so this really has to go. I'm looking for [s]£290[/s] (£240 collected) for the lot, that's £50 less than I paid for the bass alone. I was going to put a figure in here of the amount I've lost but I find it a bit painful so I'll let you guys do the maths. It's taught me a lesson though, well for this week anyway, who knows what I'll buy on a whim next time......... There are no marks of scratches on the Bass or the case, the strings and strap are new and the set up is superb, In total it's probably had 5 - 6 hours playing. The original strings are also included - if you like round-wound. Follow the web links above to get specs etc, I'd prefer a local buyer (I live in Hertfordshire - close to St Albans) - shipping guitars gives me the willies - I see the way couriers treat the stuff where I work. I hope the attached photo's are OK. Thanks for looking. Oggy
14. Hi Bass Chatters It's been a long time since I've been on the site - serious illness in the family (our son) has been my priority this last year. I'm now back in a state of mind where I can start playing again and I'm looking to Trade / Swap my Short Scale Gibson SG Reissue Bass, the same as this one: http://www.dv247.com...e-cherry--36996 for something that's 32" Medium Scale. I've had her for nearly three years now and not played it nearly enough - I just seem to favour the CIJ Fender Mustang Bass that I bought on this site a while ago so the SG doesn't get much use at all. The bass is in really good condition and comes with the USA case, as in above advert. I've upgraded the bridge, couldn't get on with the 3 point Gibson one, I still have it though so it'd go with the Bass. If I get any interest in a trade / swap for a 32" I'll post photos, the only reason I haven't yet is that I'm not sure how to at this moment - the site has changed somewhat since I last sold or bought anything here. Can I just use the 'Attach File' to load up some JPEG photos? I know 32" Medium Scale Basses are quite a rare beast so I'm pretty open to looking at whatever you have. Oggy

18. Hi Chaps I'm 'very new' to digital recording devices and DAW's. Some of you will have seen me asking stupid questions and doing some really stupid things to try and get a reasonable recording result using a Zoom H4n and GarageBand. I've tried to manipulate the two stereo files that the Zoom H4n produces (In 4 CHN Mode) using hard panning left and right and multiple copies of the stereo tracks to get separation of instruments and vocals in GarageBand; see my last thread: My Last Thread I've found the answer! A company in the US of A called Sound Devices have a 'FREE ' piece of software (Mac or PC) that will take a stereo WAV file and split it into two mono files - you have to register with them to download it, it's not one of these pieces of software that expires in a few days unless you purchase it , it really is FREE. I downloaded it this afternoon and I've been happily using it on the Zoom produced stereo files to produce mono files that I can load into GarageBand as separate tracks - works a treat. Dead easy to use, even I got to grips with it in a few mins. The link for the site is: Sound Devices - Wave Agent Software Happy file splitting, I knew I'd find something, just took me a bit longer than I though. This piece of software does lots of other audio stuff that I don't understand - yet. Oggy
19.
2 stereo tracks IS the only option. But in any halfway decent DAW you can seperate the stereo tracks into mono and then pan them as you will....
It can be done BUT - it's a pain and can't be done 'on the fly' in GarageBand itself. I asked on one of the Apple blog sites and got pointed to a web site that gives loads of GarageBand info, read on:- Q. How can I split a stereo track I have in GarageBand into 2 separate Mono files? A. Pan the GarageBand track to one side, and export to iTunes via the Share menu. Next, in iTunes, set iTunes' importing preference to the format you want, and mono, Select the song in iTunes and choose the "Create [format] Version" menu Item from the advanced menu. Repeat the steps panning the other way if you want the other channel as a mono file as well. Who ever said this recording stuff was easy - not me for sure. Oggy
20.
2 stereo tracks IS the only option. But in any halfway decent DAW you can seperate the stereo tracks into mono and then pan them as you will....
Hello 51m0n I have no idea if GarageBand is what could be called a “halfway decent DAW”, it’s the only one I’ve used and that’s only because it came with the Mac. It might well have the capability of taking in a stereo file and converting it to two separate mono files; I have down loaded the ‘manual’ – I can’t find anything about conversion of a single stereo file to two mono files though (it would be the answer to positioning instruments / vocals in the mix though) – I’ll try one of the Mac blog sites to see if anyone can help. This is all new territory for me, both the Zoom H4n and using any form of ‘DAW’, great fun though and perhaps a bit of a tough learning curve will make life a bit easier for me down the road. Oggy
This was shot two nights ago on Friday 23rd July by local enthuiastic amateur Bernie in one of our local pubs in Sunderland, despite him being up close to us it's turned out quite well. 22.
Not bad, just need to mix some things properly I'd say - Bass and drums don't sound to bad. The drums sound slightly distant to me for some reason. That's probably down to the mic'ing arrangement. the vocals are panned to the left - they should be central. I think they could do with a bit more top and less reverb. Guitar is slightly loud and should be panned both left and right. Apart from that, not too bad.
Hello WHUFC BASS Thanks for the feedback, appreciated. The story on the vocals panned to the left: The Zoom H4n, when using 4 CHN mode produces two WAV files - both in stereo. The way I set it up to record the rehearsal was to use the two inbuilt mics to record the Bass and Drums, this produced No. 1 WAV stereo file. Using the 'extra' two mic inputs, I used one for the vocals from the PA speaker and the other placed in front of the guitar amp speaker, this produced No. 2 stereo WAV file. I then fired up GarageBand and moves both the WAV files into separate tracks; so I had just two tracks in GarageBand each with a single stereo WAV file on. To enable me to 'attempt' some 'enhancing' and adding effects for each instrument and the vocals meant that I had to make additional copies of the tracks, so I had two No. 1 WAV files (each as a separate track), panned hard left on one track and hard right on the other - what this did for me was the allow me to use the EQ, compression and other effects differently on each track i.e. increase the top end on the drum side to bring the cymbals up and find the frequency where I could alter the snare drum sound, on the 'other half' of the same stereo track - now panned to the other side - I could alter the sound / effects on the bass. I did the same copy and hard panning with No. 2 WAV file that contained the vocals and guitar then mixed the whole lot to produce the MP3. I'm pretty sure this not the correct way of doing things but it was all I could come up with at the time. If the Zoom H4n gave me a separate WAV file for each of the four inputs I wouldn't have the problem - I dare say that there is some way of chopping the stereo files into two single mono files (one for each side) that would allow me to then 'position' the instruments / vocals a lot better for a final mix - I've yet to find how to do that . If you, or any Basschater, knows how to do that I'd be really grateful for a nudge in the right direction. Thanks for taking the time to have a listen and giving me your comments - boy do I need them. Oggy
23. Well Chaps - No interest here so I'll stick it on the bay tomorrow while I'm 'working from home' . Thanks for looking though. Oggy
24. Choices - Choices - Choices - Agghhh Thank you all very much for your comments and advice. If I was buying another Bass I'd be quite happy to go into a shop and give it a try - trying out a microphone is a different kettle of fish though . Oggy
25. Hello fellow Basschatters A month or two ago I ‘acquired’ a Zoom H4n digital recorder – I’ve been experimenting with it and GarageBand. I did a 4 CHN recording using the inbuilt mics for Drums and Bass and the additional two mic inputs for Vocal and Lead Guitar. The Zoom produced two stereo WAV files that I loaded into GarageBand and tweaked. Remember that this is all new territory for me so the result might not be up to standard, I’m reasonably pleased with it but I’ll ask you Chaps to be the Judge(s). All input / constructive advice gratefully received.
