1. Last week at band rehearsal our drummer decided to play with recording on his mobile phone This is the result, an oldie that we wanted to try out - great fun, haven't played / sung it in years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u6GijY74Fw First outing for the Mark Bass Jeff Berlin Combo. 2. 'Really Really' nice. I could listen to that over and over. There's something vaugley 60's (sort of Prince Busterish) about it - and I mean that in a positive way. Good job, love it. Oggy
3. Looks like SX300's could be the way forward. I'll check out the prices, dimensions and weight as well as have a look for some reviews. Anyone using them in a similar situation as myself - 'comments' and the 'pros & cons' would be most welcome. Many thanks for the input Ive had from all those Basschaters above. 4. Hi Phil Starr Budget: Don't want to have to rob a bank - Perhaps £100 - £200 each, no objections to used / second hand. Usage: Only vocals, usually just me, occasionally one other on backing, no instruments. Band / type: Three piece Blues / Blues Rock - not that loud, pubs and small venues - not had a problem being heard so far. Active Speakers: I'd like to continue using the McGregor PA amp, so nothing active. How Light?: As light as possible without compromising clarity. Wattage rating: 250W per cab would be ideal. 12" V's 10": Don't mind as long as I get the sound projection. Compact / Light / Good projection and Clarity. Not asking for much then Oggy
5. Hi Basschaters I'd like to downsize my PA speakers without loosing out on loudness / clarity. I have an old McGregor PA (has 1/4" jack inputs, tells you how old it is), it's 250W a side and has a great sound plus it's easy to set up and use - it ain't broke so I really don't see the need to change it. What I would like to change are the two 15" speakers with horns that I've used for ever - nothing wrong with them - they sound great - they are just bulky, take up to much room in the car and are heavy to lug around. With the advent of super light / powerful Bass speakers I think there must be more compact / lighter PA speakers I could use. It's not as if we mic up drums through the PA - we only ever play pubs and smaller venues. Any of you guys have recommendations on a lighter more compact set that will handle +/- 250W each? 12" or even 10" speakers that can handle the 250W would be OK with me as long as I kept the clarity and were easier on my back. Any suggestions / recommendations? Oggy
6.
From the Markbass website: What do the VLE and VPF filters do? The VLE and VPF are useful EQ filters that help you adapt your sound for different styles of music. The VLE (Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator) is a shelf EQ that cuts a wider and wider range of high frequencies as you turn it up. Markbass amps are very clear-sounding, and this filter has the effect of drawing you into the mix more, making your sound less present. It's kind of like an "old school" knob! The VPF (Variable Preshape Filter) boosts lows and highs, and cuts mids. Some call this kind of effect a scoop, a smiley-shape EQ, or an enhance knob. It's very effective for slap bass, pick playing, and driving eighth-note rock. These two filters can be combined for interesting effects. But remember that they are off when they are all the way counterclockwise--we suggest you start in that position and turn the filters up gradually, one at a time, to hear and understand what they do.
Thank you Guys, appreciated. From what Roland Rock sent me from the Mark Bass web site; I can see the VLE knob getting some use "Old School" - that's me. I never did get the hang of playing with a pick or slapping / popping. Thanks again Chaps, I had a feeling I'd get some sense here. Ciao Oggy
7. Hi Basschaters I've just bought a Mark Bass Jeff Berlin Combo, 'slap it hard' is now the new owner of my Genz Benz and Barefaced cab - he brought along his oversized violin to try it out - the misses is still glaring at me and complaining that her teeth are now loose . Anyway I didn't get a proper user manual with it, aparently "it will be with me shortly". I have downloaded the 'Owners Manual' from the Mark Bass web site, but to be quite honest - it's about as good as a Chocolate Teapot. The manual gives a numbered picture view of the front and rear of the amp section i.e. 1. Unbalanced 1/4" jack input 2. Balanced XLR input etc Most of the knobs and inputs / outputs are self explanatory and nothing I've not seen before but - it has two knobs that I'm not familiar with. Can someone give me the lowdown on what VLE and VPF do? The manual tells me that the VLE is a Filter Level Control Knob, it also tells me that the VPF is a Filter Level Control Knob . Any of you chaps out there know what those knobs really do? I have to say that even not knowing what those knobs do didn't stopped me using the amp at rehearsals last Thursday - it's awesome - the exclusion of a tweeter / horn and the range of the equalisation knobs is great - this combo has more bottom end than I could ever get out of the Benz with the Barefaced - loving it. Oggy
8. Looks like a lot of love for the F1 on here, perhaps I'm making a mistake looking at the Mark Bass - Jeff Berlin Combo . To be honest though I'm not really looking for to much versatility from the amp, I very rarely change the settings on an amp or bass once I'm a couple of numbers into a set - It's Blues / Blues Rock that we play as a three piece so depth and sustain is what I like to fill things out. Funny though - I've had a couple of nibbles about the Genz but not a sniff on the Barefaced Compact - I thought it'd be the other way around - perhaps I'm asking to much for the Barefaced?
9. Hi Mike Sooooooo - you did a sneaky and bought another 32" Jap Jazz - in sunburst (my favourite) . A few pictures would't go amiss, you know how much I love these basses. Sorry I've not been in touch for a long while, my older brother died unexpectidly at the end of July and it's been a trying time for the whole family; plus, I started a new job in August that's quite demanding. I'll drop you an email and let you know what's been happening with us. I hope you're doing OK. Tim (Oggy)
10.
Nice set up - hard to imagine how Mark Bass might improve on it.
Hi Kiwi I very much doubt that it will - it's more about change than anything else. I heard a Mark Bass Jeff Berlin 15" combo pumping away in the rehearsal room next to where we were rehearsing a couple of week ago - has to be said - really nice. I know I should probably stick with the Benz and the Barefaced, probably just GAS getting the better of me .
11. Well I think it looks the dogs gonads. If my fingers were just that wee bit longer I'd have it I'm still in love with the 32" Jap Jazz I bought from you. And yes, the short scale Gibson SG Bass is still under the bed
12. GONE - SOLD I've been advised, by those who know these things, that I'm being a tad optamistic looking for £400 for the Barefaced Compact 15" - even though it comes with a Roqsolid cover. Soooooo - how about £350 for it. I have interest in the Genz Benz, I'll know after the weekend if it's found a new home. Time For a Change I'm looking to purchase a Mark Bass Combo so these two have got to go . Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 - Great amp, comes with carry case. Paint a bit worn, as expected, other than that it's in perfect working order. Big sound from a small light amp. PRICE: £275. Barfaced 15" Cab - Really light with loads of bottom end. No scuffs, almost as new - It's one of the first generation - metal grill. Roqsolid cover included. [s]PRICE: £400[/s]. PRICE NOW: £350 Any takers? For sale as a pair or individually. I'm not looking to be posting / couriering these, pickup or a meet would be great. I'm based in Hertfordshire (WD6). Thanks for looking. Pictures:
13. Hi Wiggybass I still have it, nothing came out of the woodwork that I fancied so I just hung on to it. Bit of a waste really but perhaps I'll go back to it one of these days. Oggy
14.
For that you need the Compressorhead app:
Brilliant - bit disappointed that I couldn't hear the vocals though . Oggy
15. Hi Guys I've got the Line6 Sonic Port and the free iPad Pod software installed, we bit disappointed - it's all about those 6 string players with loads of pedals , anyway, onwards and upwards. Has anyone bought the iPad app 'Bass Guitar Tutor Pro' £1,99 from the iTunes store? If anyone has it please let me know what you think and if it interfaces with the Sonic Port. What I'd real like is some iPad based Bass Music Reading software that will interface directly with my Bass through the Sonic Port - anyone know of anything? Oggy
16. Thanks again guys, appreciate the suggestions. Just ordered the Line6 Sonic Port and a nice set of headphones with a good bass response spec. Looking forward to to doing a bit of 'iBass' playing . I've not purchased any bass related iPad apps yet, any suggestions for what I should buy that will work with the Sonic Port . Oggy
17.
I use a Line6 Sonic Port, Works with the included Pod software and with Amplitude. Great practice tool.
Looks like a Sonic Port is on the cards. Is there other iPad 'Bass Training' software apps available that interface to the Sonic Pod besides the Line 6 stuff? I'm thinking apps that will teach and test you using the input from your playing against an iPad app. Oggy
18. Thanks Guys for the links and advice. Looks like I'll get a lot of use out of the iPad. Oggy
19. "Gobsmacked". My daughter bought me an iPad Mini for Fathers Day, I must have done something right at some time in the past - my three Sons sent me belated text messages. Anyway, do any of you guys out there have any suggestions for Bass guitar related apps that I can buy? I'd be interested in any apps that will help my playing and are fun to use. Does any one out there know if there are any apps available that come with hardware that will allow the bass to plug in to the iPad? Oggy
20. Steve bought a set of 'almost new condition' flats from me for his SG. Cash arrived in my bank before I'd sent the flats. I can only echo all the great comments in the posts above - good on you Steve. Oggy
