Hey folks, I am considering moving to a short or med scale bass. I haven't been able to play one yet but I thought I would ask first what you folks thought. What are your experiences with the shorter scales? What do they offer in ways of tonality and playability? Will appreciate all advice. Cheers, Tom
Hi Tom, My reason for migration to a Short Scale was ‘pain’. I’d played standard scale 34” for several years and over the last couple of years found that my right hand finger joints were developing a touch of arthritis, not too much of a problem at first but it gradually got worse and I had to look for a solution, it got to a point where I’d start getting pain in the joints then cramp would set in. I tried a couple of short scale basses and found that it was easier on the joints – so short scale was the way to go if I wanted to keep playing. I’ve only had a short scale (Gibson SG re-issue) for about six months but it’s made the difference I was looking for. I still get a wee bit of pain but nothing like it was. The Short Scale Gibson is a great little bass, with the mini humbucker at the bridge end and the fat humbucker at the neck end the range of tones available is pretty good (remember I play mostly Blues or Blues/Rock so it suits pretty well. I’ve recently acquired a Fender Mustang, it’s early days with this and I’m still getting used to it – for some reason it feels smaller than the Gibson, it balances on the strap a lot better than the Gibson (neck dive even though it’s short scale – something to consider). At the moment I think I’d have to say I prefer the Gibson but that might all change as I get used to the Mustang. I’m on the lookout for a medium Scale (32”) at the moment. I’d like to try one for a bit and if it doesn’t work for me (joints) then I’d pass it on. If you know anyone with a short scale I’d suggest you have a go, maybe borrow one for a practice session where you play for a while with it. For the type of stuff I play both the Gibson and Mustang are OK, I have no idea if they lend themselves to popping and slapping – not my thing I’m afraid. As you can see from some of the other replies there are quite a few to choose from, some easier to source than others and quite a range of prices. Oggy
Not completely sure how I feel about this sort of thing. I suppose it should be right up my street, me being an old git involved in playing, writing & recording original material at an unsigned level, and that seeming to be what their "mission statement" is predominantly championing. However I can't help feeling that the last thing a band like mine needs is to voluntarily pigeonhole - and further marginalise - itself as a "mature" band. I'm not sure I'm expressing this too well - in fact I probably need to give a bit more thought to my reaction in order to articulate it to myself a bit more clearly. This is doubtless a good thing for some old gits - but perhaps not for all old gits! Jon.
Hi Bassassin, Bit easier for me I suppose, seeing as I'm an old git who just loves to play live and have a bit of fun talking to / exchanging views / ideas with other like minded old git's. Sounds as though you and your band are a lot more serious about what you do ,"writing & recording original material at an unsigned level", I'd call that taking it seriously. Good on you and your band, if the truth be known 'I'm kinda jealous', we've only ever played covers and have no aspirations towards fame and fortune - just playing live and having some fun. The last time I had an original though  the Missus , bless her, told me not to be silly and to behave myself . I don't see it as being pigeon holed, I just see it as being a more likely spot to bump into those on a similar wavelength  . I'll think the majority of the members would be of a similar ilk to myself ie. getting on a bit but not ready to give up, well not yet anyway. Your a very lucky old git if you have the talent to not only play but also create fresh music - more power to your elbow Bassassin. Oggy
I was sent a link to this some time ago (from an article in The Times online) and meant to check it out further. Thanks for the reminder.
Hi Stingra5, It's still a wee bit new so needs as many new members as possible - not just bass players, you may also have to converse with the 'other types' . I think it'll take off, we're all living that bit longer these days - three cheers for the NHS . I'm still working on spending the inheritance........... Oggy

I wonder if, down the road, they'll do the TC-Helicon trick? What I mean is; TC-Helicon bought out a floor mounted Voice processor (VoiceLive) - had every thing and it's dog on it, great bit of kit - bloody hard to drive (unless you're a tap dancer), later they bought out 'lesser models ie. VoiceDouble' with just some of the features on. I bought the VoiceLive and ended up selling it, at the usual LOSS, and buying one of the lesser models that had all I needed on it. Making my bass sound closer to an upright would be a really nice feature to have, I'd also love the pitch shift. What a great bit of kit though, I hope one of the members gets one and lets us all know more about it. Go on Oli - you know you want to . Oggy
You must have bugged my house..........right?
Hi Shaggy, You have to be so careful with pillow talk these days, you never know who's listening Ditty for you One of the funniest band conversations I’ve ever heard was between a lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist I played in a band with back in the 80’s. The rhythm guitarist owned a small independent music shop so was never short of new gear to show off :snob: ; the lead guitarist (usually skint like the rest of us) played a very old Wilson through an original (really beat up and held together by tape and string) VOX AC 30, none the less he was a really great player and produced the goods . One practice night the rhythm guitarist turned up with ‘yet another' change of amp. and guitar, some Yamaha posh amp and a a brand new Rickenbacker (like the one the guy in the Birds used to play. Anyway, just as we were finishing up the session the conversation went something like this:- Rhythm Guitarist to Lead Guitarist: Well what do you think? Lead Guitarist to Rhythm Guitarist: Think about what? Rhythm Guitarist to Lead Guitarist: My new state of the art Yami and the Ricky :snob: . Look of intense consideration appears on the Lead Guitarists face and conversation continues: Lead Guitarist to Rhythm Guitarist: Well, If I were you I’d take the Ricky and beat the SH*T out of that Yami thing with it, it sounds like a bag of nails . The band broke up shortly after that – wonder why ? Oggy
Nah I've had it recently, your one o the guys with small hands like me! The way I see it, there not that many different tones to bass - Jazz, Precision, MM, Rickenbacker or Hi-Fi (status). Then you have your 4,5 and 6 strings. Then effects. Then amps. Its best I feel to buy a good amp (£1200 tops) a 24 fret hifi soapbar four string such as the Cort A4 which is extremely well built and comfortable to play and get one of those Roland V-99 which pitch shifts - turning a standard tuned bass to eb by the click of a button. The V-99 also imitates and combines effects including jazz, precision tones etc. Thats my assessment, coming from a guy with the same problem as you...but just spent 1k on a masterbuilt guitar...
Hi Oli, I'm intrigued , "Roland V-99 which pitch shifts - turning a standard tuned bass to eb by the click of a button. The V-99 also imitates and combines effects including jazz, precision tones etc.", is it a sort of TC-Helicon VoiceLive for Bass? The idea of dropping to a B tuning at the push of a button has got my GAS going again . What did you have masterbuilt? (Who, What (Pic's), Where and how are you finding it?) Oggy

Just putting this up to see what you guys think, and it's a wee bit slack at work today. GAS – Agghhhhhh. Why is it that we Bass players suffer so badly with it? Well judging by this site we do. I’ve been in ‘a few’ bands over the years and those six stringers don’t seem to suffer with the GAS problem nearly as much as us. From my observations the six stringers usually start out with a budget Stratocaster look alike or similar then progress to a reasonably pricy Fender Strat or Tele or a Gibson Les Paul and stay with it for years. I’ve had 9 basses over the last 4 years and I’m still lusting after, and will probably get if finances allow, several more in the short to medium term. I just keep looking for that ‘perfect’ look, feel and sound. With each new purchase I think ‘Yeh, that’s it’ only to find that a few days, week or months down the road I’m suffering from GAS yet again. Any one else noticed this lack of GAS in the six string community, or is it my imagination? Oggy
I have a very good friend who bought this Les Paul Standard bass about 18 months ago for £850. He had to search around a couple of months to get it at that price. They are now deleted (despite some stock left in some stores maybe), and if you ask anyone that has played a few different 90s/00s Les Pauls, it is the Standard that they always rate. To be honest i'm surprised Gibson stopped making them. But they did. So that's why I say £850-£900. As always, to some extent it depends on how quickly you need it sold.
Thanks eLJ, From the input I've had back (thanks to you chaps) on this; it looks like I'll have to get the Camera out and take some fresh shots before posting it for sale at £900, start at the upper end and see what happens . I'll get that 32" Scale Bass by hook or by crook . Thanks again to you all. Oggy

Thank you Basschatters, It's great that you chaps have taken the time to add replies. From the advice so far (not checked out the 'evilbay' thing yet - not sure how to), it looks like anywhere between £700 - £900 :
evilLordJuju Posted Today, 04:29 PM I thinl you could hold out for 850- 900 - they are no longer produced, and are highly regarded amongst the newer les paul models.

Tinman Posted Today, 01:17 PM I think the general rule of thumb is in the region of 2/3rds of the market price. Especially for a pristine example.

bob_pickard Posted Today, 01:07 PM I reckon it'll probably top out around £7-800 quid on a good day - bung it on ebay and give it a whirl - or check out the completed listings tick box on ebay to see what they've been selling for
I'd like to hear from any Gibson Fans out there - any of you guys tried to buy one lately? Comments on the experience (read price paid +/-, availability)? Oggy

Hi Basschatters, After having a good chat with myself I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to have to sell a Bass that ‘lives under the bed’, to get a Bass that I’ll actually play. Back in 2001 I went to see the Yardbirds and fell in love with the Bass, the guitar that is not the player, although I’m sure he’s a nice boy. The Bass in question was a black Gibson Les Paul Standard Bass; never seen one before and made up my mind on the spot I was going to own one – does this feeling sound familiar to you? – Yup, raging GAS. After much searching I eventually found one at the Bass Cellar in London (Honeyburst / brand spanking new) in 2002, flashed the cash (£1,250) and she was mine, all mine. Problem – I couldn’t get on with it. Now I’m not the ‘biggest strongest player you ever did see’, I have what you might call a ‘slight build’ and I’ve got small hands. For me - I found the Bass heavy and the 34” ‘Standard Scale’ just too much to do more than a couple of numbers with before my back and shoulder started playing up and my left hand started to cramp – not good. I used the Bass at two or three practice sessions and one charity gig then put it back in its case and under the bed. It’s come out, probably every six months or so, just to look at it, dust it off and put it back under the bed – “What a waste” I hear you cry - well you’re right but I just couldn’t bring myself to admit I’d made a mistake and I’d never play it, just another one of life’s little curved balls. Help required – (My Missis has been telling me that for years ) The Bass is in immaculate condition, no dinks, scratches or any blemishes. If you saw it in hanging up in a music shop you’d honestly think it was new, well its not. It was manufactured in 2001 and I bought it ‘new’ in 2002. I want to purchase a Landing 32” Scale Bass from the USA (can’t get a 32” bass locally – rare as……………), it’s an expensive game buying from the US, I’ve tried locally but has ‘zip luck’ so – I’d like some opinions from fellow Basschatters on what would be a fare price to ask for this Bass? The last time I saw this particular Bass for sale was some six months ago on the thoman.de web site, at that time they were asking £1,350 for one. I’ve done several searches lately and can no longer find any for sale, perhaps I’m not looking in the right places. A few pictures of the bass and my latest attempt to get my (small) hands on a 32” Scale base can be found here: Attempt at getting a 32" Scale Bass Thanks for reading this, sorry it’s a bit like War and Peace but I think it’s important to give a bit of background when asking for opinions. Oggy PS. I’m playing a Short Scale Mustang and Gibson SG at the moment – both very nice.
