1. just dont do what I did - replied to 3 adverts in Gumtree last week and then realised that I'd written my email address wrong ( .com instead of .co.uk ) twat !!
2. Ha Ha welcome to the unemployed bassplayers club - please take a seat, a consultant will be along to discuss your future options shortly
3.
Got my white RV4 Rickenfaker on Monday. A brief run down before I post more in the white bass thread. Finish - Paint and binding are excellent. Nice fretwork and tidy inlays. Everything as it should be. Feels very sturdy. Hardware - MM style bridge and tuners are good quality. Sound - The two MM style passive pickups have a very healthy output. Nice and thick snarly sound with a trebly rasp. All three combinations are very useable. The real proof is in a band mix which will be next Wednesday. Stuff that needs attention - The cheapo strings turned my fingertips black. I binned them and have put on an old set of DR black beauties. Tone conrols do nothing much except when rolled off completely. I'll replace these. The nut seems to be cut a little to low. Action needs to come down a bit. It's playable but on the high side even with a tweak on the truss road. I'll take it for a proper set up soon. Fingerboard was very dry. Rubbed a bit of fast fret in. May put some raw linseed on it as I like the smell. Dot markers on the neck are very small and a pale grey. Very hard to see. I'll have to get some kind of stickers. Especially as frets aren't normally where I would expect. For £249 it's a damn good bass though. For a few quid more it will be excellent. I can see this as an occasional gigging tool. Plus it looks very cool.
Damn you - why did I have to read this £ 249 seems an absolute bargain - certainly compared to the £ 200 piece of crap I bought of Ebay last year
4. I always avoided the bass solo in My Generation but when I had to learn it for a covers band I found that it wasnt that hard - still took me a week to learn though
5. cheers for that - that sounds quite simple
6. Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I hope its a simple question. I was playing my new 5 string bass which I got off ebay a few weeks ago, everything was OK until I hit the 9th fret in the D string its the worse fret buzz I've ever heard just a huge clanging sound. The strange thing is everything else sounds OK and the fret feels smooth. The strings are new roundwounds , I'm guessing medium guage. Am I right in thinking this is just fret buzz and change the strings and it that doesnt work sand the fret a bit to get rid of it. TBH its the first time I've come across something like this on a bass
7. I suppose the Stevens and Collins ones would look "cool" if your 14 years old but my God the Zender one the guy with the ugly stick must have been doing overtime that day
8. just a thought but when you rehearse is the PA set up properly - its amazing what a bit of reverb help the vocals
9. Or you could just go the Dereck Smalls route and play lots of open strings and point
10.
I could be tempted to get this book. I just find the whole idea of learning to read rather daunting and wonder if I will be able to commit to learning, I can get very lazy if not pushed and find it difficult. Is the book really good Alistair?
Why dont I bring it to the SE Bass Bash *, along with a few other bits and pieces and everyone can make their own mind up ! * assuming Mrs Thunderbird doesnt want to go shopping that day
11.
I only started this thread to see if anyone would say Alain Caron
I have honestly never heard of this guy and it only seems to be you that mentions him. One day I'm going to have to check him out and it will be your fault
12.
Yeah, i sometimes feel im not a real bass player because i dont know even 50% of the names banded about on here. The way some poepl go on about them make me feel liek i nee dot go and listen but liek you i just cant stay interested. Maybe its because its not really relevant to my playing as im much more of a basic driving bass line/rock player and i hate being asked to play solo's etc.
I'm exactly the same, as I hobby player I'm only really interested in music that speaks to me rather than someone who makes music which may be technically brillant but leaves me cold. Back on topic I would like to be influenced by Paul McCartney, Andy Rourke and perhaps a bit of Geddy Lee. However all my fingers can produce is Adam Clayton and Bil Wyman
13.
And hands up how many of you tried two-handed tapping before you tried reading music? I know I did!
Guilty as well - Metallica the intro to One
14.
On a serious note then, If you were to start right back at page one what book should you buy? Nothing heavy just a simple to read straight forward book that would get you reading off the page and get you used to going straight to the right note without thinking to hard. No chordal stuff or arpeggios, just a good simple book even if it meant the first 20 pages only needed scanning through for most of us. 15. why not just get a wah wah pedal - that should cure any rock leanings !
16. I hate learning songs by listening to them on CD as I really struggle to hear the bass in a lot of songs. The result of this is that by the time I've worked it out I'm so sick of the song I dont want to play it. The solution for me is to get the guitar pro version, if its available, play along with this a couple of times and then if I feel it helps change the bassline around to suit my playing.
17.
Laugh and treat it as a jazz solo.
Cant believe that anyone laughs whilst playing a jazz solo - scowling and looking intent are more whats required. OT the one thing I would add is that its natural to make mistakes but if you make the same mistake repeatedly then there is something wrong
18.
The thing about guitarists that I don't get is the self-importance. There are lots of guitarists - far more than bassists, vocalists & drummers put together. So why don't they grasp quite how replaceable they are? Jon.
I honestly believe that the majority of guitarists are so focused on their own little part ( the dreaded guitar solo ) that they genuinely dont get the fact that there is a song going on around them !
19.
The guitarist has just graduated as a 'graphic designer' and takes everything far too seriously and basically thinks he knows everything,
A designer who thinks they know everything - never heard of that before sounds like you and the drummer should split and try to find another guitarist who isnt an idiot ( might take a bit of time though )
20. simple I wanted to be in a band at school , everyone who played guitar was a knob, singers were just up themselves and drummers were too scary - only one option then
21. I tend to play more appegios than chords as I find it difficult to control the sound playing a full chord. I was thinking of getting a capo onto my 5 string to make it easier to play chords higher up the neck. Does anyone else do this ? Also I came across this book on the library which I've been ducking in and out of chords book
22. I only found out that the area where the skin meets the fingernail is called the quick - so my nails are always cut to the quick
23.
Here's the link to the interview! http://bassmusicianmagazine.com/2010/11/bi...-bass%e2%80%9d/
well done -nice to get recognition !
24. Has anyone tried getting tickets for this yet I cant see it on the website and I really cant face the automated calling system first thing on a Monday Update managed to find it using a google search instead of the Cineworld website - tickets booked now If there are any other BCers going see you there !
25. had to learn Sultans of Swing last night - I'm pretty neutral to it as a listener but I get bored playing it all the way through - hoping it sounds better at rehearsal
