1. Anyone else going to the Whisky Fringe tomorrow? Last year was superb ... 25 whiskies in 4 hours ...
2.
Its not a case of being under the thumb or doing what your told. It's a case of whats best for the common good of the family. After all family comes first, and if that isn't your veiw then would you get married in the first place? As several people have said, its all about compromise and negotiation.
+1 ... and it all changes (for the better) when kids come along!!
3. Thanks for the feedback ... MIJ it is then!
4. I’m thinking about buying a bottom-end Fender Jazz and improving it as money becomes available. By improving it I mean changing the pickups, bridge and pickguard (and possibly the tuners) and adding a J-Retro preamp. This would be done in stages as and when I can afford it. Now, I can pick up a new MIM Std Jazz for around £350 or a new MIJ Std Jazz for around £390. I know what a MIM sounds and plays like, but I can’t get my hands on a MIJ (locally) for comparison. So my question is … is the build quality of the body and neck of the MIJ generally better than the MIM and, if so, by how much? Okay, the difference is only £40, but that’s one Wizard pickup or 2/3rds of a BadAss II. If the MIJ is appreciably better, I’d rather start from a better base (no pun intended!). Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.
5.
Many thanks for all of the suggestions. I've just (this lunchtime) been offered a Boss BF-3 for £30 by someone with more money than sense (he has a home studio full of expensive stuff he doesn't use!) so I'll be giving that one a go Hopefully it will compare well to the BF-2B.
I actually ended up with an FL-9 ... the guy who was selling me his BF-3 'accidentally ran it over it with his Land Rover' and offered be an FL-9 instead! I'm quite impressed as it delivers a nice 'round' tone which is just what I'm after.

10. Many moons ago, when I played bass in my youth, I had an amp which (believe it or not) had a build in flanger effect (if anyone is interested, it was a 100W OHM head with a 7 band EQ and aforementioned flanger). At the time I became quite partial to a little bit of flange. 20-something years on, I'm now on the flange hunt once again. Can anyone recommend a decent flanger pedal? Thanks.
11. Martin Turner, original bass player with Wishbone Ash ... excellent melodic bass lines.
12. After drooling over some of these build diaries, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on an ACG Harlot ...
13.
It'll make a difference to the number of gigs I go to - as a non-smoker I used to cough my way through and have to go outside for fresh air every half hour or so - so I for one am all for the ban (pubs too, our local is great apart from the fog)
+1 to that ... I'm a lot more likely to go along to gigs now that I don't end up an asthmatic wreck after a few hours in a pub
14. Other - Cort Artisan A4
15.
I have to say IMO white perloid would look very good on that bass....
+1 ... very good ...
16. Brian ... 43 year old Scot with ever growing baldy bit ... played bass in the early '80 in a prog band ... had to sell all due to financial woes around '85 ... picked up a bass again in 2005 with a view to getting a load of practice in before my son was born ... but he arrived early and scuppered my plans! Unable to plonk much recently due to aforementioned son and working away from home too much ... but now things are starting to look up
17. Absolutely gorgeous. Can't stop looking at it!
18.
Nice, I like Medium and short scale basses because I've got small fingers. My Squier P just makes me want to throw it into a wall. Thats probably why I'm buying the jazz bass
The A4 is a full scale bass, but doesn't feel like one. Being a mutant with long arms and short fingers it's the slim neck that did it for me
19.
How does it sound??
If you've ever played an Ibanez SR900 or 1000 it sounds surprisingly like one (I believe they're made in the same factory) ... I tried all 3 together when I bought this and ended up choosing the Cort because it 'felt' better to play (though I almost bought a EDA900 because of the feel, but had a blast of good sense at the last minute!) ... there was really nothing much between them. With the active circuit off it does sound just a wee bit thin around the bottom end, but I thought that about the Ibanez's as well so I may just be cloth eared.
20. Okay ... the photo is not nearly as good as most that will posted here over the next few weeks, but here goes ... Ideal for the shorter fingered amongst us!
