1. Not really relevant, but I have a Japanese jazz that I bought here about 2 years ago for 55000 yen, which at the time was somewhere in the region of 250 quid. It's an absolute beauty! Nice and crunchy sounding, but with a good bit of variation tone wise if you can be arsed to fiddle with it. Basically, going on this and the other ones I tried in the shop, I'd really recommend them to anyone who's after a new 'un. I would love a 70's jazz, but I don't have the coin, I don't get on very well with P's because my hands are only little  Been a while since I've played one though, so if anyone fancies letting me play with theirs, (purely for research purposes of course) I'll take good care of it :brow:
2. The problem with those kinds of things is that you really have to stick at it for it to be worth it, can you really see yourself sitting for hours on end just listening to those things? I couldn't hack it I don't reckon. Also, if you do what Doddy and The Major said, you'll get the full benefit of learning that stuff in a real musical context, if you can refine your aural skills whilst applying it to an instrument at the same time, that would seem -to me at least- to be the best option.
3.
Tom Jenkinson is a personal favorite. Very different to the silky smooth skills of Mr. Miller. You'll need to search Squarepusher.
I like both, is that allowed? Just as an aside, my girly picked a squarepusher track as the first song for our wedding, I knew I picked her for a good reason!
4.
This album, like much of his stuff is over-rated. I dont doubt he is an OK bass player but his music leaves me feeling cold and bored.
If he's an 'OK bass player' then I'm f***in sh*te!
5.
We can start a club!! I only like Edward Scissorhands and that's only because of the score!!!
Can I join? Little known fact, the phrase 'overrated shoe-gazing toss' was first used by Nostradamus when he predicted the existence of a (and I quote) "pretentious little man with daft hair making films for teenage gofficks and that gimp from AFI" true story.
6.
That's really cool. For me,Marcus is still the man.All three play great, but I dig the way that Marcus is totally holding the groove down, but still tears it up. I think one of the reasons that it all works-on the album too-is not only their musicianship, but the fact that they each have a very distinctive tone. They can all play without it sounding all muddy.
All day, I love Marcus' playing, his tone is always amazing too, and so instantly recognisable, shame some of his music is such utter toss though! cool video, it's nice seeing people who are so famous and so massively influential not being arses!
7. I love me some gospel bass like, I'll check those out when I get home! (at work now) the reason I just came actually was to ask if anyone knows who played on the Ladysmith Black Mambazo track 'River of Dreams'? Loving the stone on there.
8. Nice one Howard, that sounds great. As was said before the tone sounds spot on!
9. When I played double in a jazz quartet I had a finger tip burst in the middle of a song, hurt like buggery but I powered through and super glued it between sets. Once the glue dried and I'd wiped the blood and skin off my finger board, I was good to go.
10.
Blimey. Seven posts into this thread and nobody has yet said "political correctness" or tried to blame it on Gordon Brown. This must be some sort of record.
That's 'cos it's got nothing to do with political correctness, it's just f***ing stupid! probably is Gordon Brown's fault though.
11.
Recent stop gap promo shots taken on a sunny afternoon in Hoxton.
Wouldn't tell the lad on the right to take his hat off like.
12. I'm another 'whatever fits' kinda guy. Normally on the bridge pickup at the moment maybe because I'm playing a jazz all the time. But tends to move around a bit, depending on what I'm doing. I even use it for playing sometimes! When I'm trying to be clever! I'd like to say I use a pick too, but I've never managed to keep hold of one long enough to play anything!
13. My Nana went to school with the guy who played Claud Greengrass in 'Heartbeat' did you know he lost a finger in a mangle when 'e were a lad? AAAAAND a guy I work with now was an extra in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' doesn't get more tenuous than that! He met Orlando Bloom, unfortunately though, he didn't slap him. Just thought of another one! I once saw Bruce Dickinson on a train, unfortunately though, I didn't slap him.
14.
So I apologise for coming of like a pretentious twat but still? (or even being one but still)
I don't think you came off like that at all, but as you said yourself, each to their own. thisnameistaken thinks it's utter gash, I couldn't agree more. But you like it, and so do a LOT of other people, that's fair enough. Don't worry about it.
15.
just trying to work out why they both felt the need to use twin-necked instruments
I think both their trousers are tight enough for the answer to be perfectly clear. Seriously though, they should take themselves, Stu Hamm, and all the rest of the 'it's time to let go brigade' and go and live on an island somewhere.
16. Nice one matey, always good to hear people enjoying music!
17. That's proper kewl! I also liked the cat!
18. Ok, so we all agree the drummer sucks, but what about the guitarist?
19. I agree with the 'they're a totally different monkey' viewpoint, I also think they can be a really good way of making something sound more interesting! Like if you've got a fairly generic sounding piece of music and you start playing it on fretless, it can add a whole new dimension to it. I love 'em. I also went through a fretless only phase a few years ago, when I was playing in a funk rock band, it was a lot of fun, really does a lot for your technique as well.
20. I was a member of the anti-jazz brigade for ages, until I moved out here and the only thing I could afford was a Japanese jazz. I now feel like an utter prat for all the daft stuff I said about them in the past. Great basses, not a single complaint.
21. There're a couple of proper good'uns in the Newcastle area, Ian Paterson, Andy Champion, and Neil Harland to name but a few. Really great all of 'em!
22. Ello, here's the problem, I've knackered me hand! Fell over snowboarding a few days ago, according to Dr. Bedside manner, I've most likely torn a ligament, (on my fretting hand, somewhere between the little finger and his next door neighbour) he reckons it'll be up to 3 weeks before I can do anything constructive with my paw. Question time, are there any of you guys who've had the same or similar problems? Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing process? Being a teacher, I'm off for the next week (winter holidays) and I really want to play bass!!!!! Is this a good idea, or to be avoided like the plague? Basically, this sucks nadgers. Any advice, greatly appreciated. Merry christmas and happy new year to you all by the way! Reason for edit: I used the word mangled in the title and again in the body of the message, unacceptable.
23.
What, no Sting? I'd have thought at least the Macca nay-sayers would have had him hung drawn and quartered long before now...
Andrew (the arrtist formerly known as metaltime) has some interesting views on Sting, give him a shout.
24. Underrated: Juan Nelson, because he's awesome! Overrated: Steve Harris, because he's in THAT band, who are not awesome, not even close.
