9. I have always thought that bass playing belongs to every style of music.... but i think it is very prominent in funk..... ..for me , i play along to hip soul ,Zep, but when you fingerstyle funk, its one of those grooves that no other rythm can satisfy on the bass..IMHO

  16.
Never been a massive fan of listening to gospel personally, just seems a bit heavy on aesthetics and a bit cliched at the expense of the music to me, its one of those genres that I really enjoy when exposed to it in the first person, but recorded it just doesn't do it for me. Then again, I've never really been exposed to that much of it and next year I'm playing bass for a gospel choir, so we'll see eh?
just seems a bit heavy on aesthetics and a bit cliched at the expense of the music to me..IMHO. the only thing that matters to these guys is the music!!!.. that and our Lord. :rolleyes:they dont give the music up for nothig..... .Aesthetics dont even come into it. I doubt these musicians think about what they, or the band look like. with respect... i didnt understand the Cliched side of it. But man your playing for a choir.i would love to do that..wether it be uk choir or usa. Gotta push your theory knowledge that.. I enjoy music recorded most of the time. You just have to use your imagination a bit
  17.
Man,that is one style I really want to learn. I now feel like I'm playing the same stuff after 5 years of bass.
Learn? I think you probably know the nuts a bolts already, its all in the rythm I now feel like I'm playing the same stuff after 5 years of bass. How do you mean?
  18. Hey people. Has any one listened to Gospel much.. Im not talking about traditional Gospel, but funky stuff. I dont mean to sound arrogant but i have listened to everything from Chaka, to White Zombie, but nothing has touched me musically like this stuff. Its not just the bass playing (which is incredible, slap/finger syle magic) but the whole feeling, rythm, and big band vocals. Now, i have been known to be thinking of what made me, but thats not why i listen to it. Sounds of Blackness got me started on this stuff 10 years ago.. If you like soul funk jazz, you HAVE to listen to this!!!!.. my erm...recommended listen is a choir/band called New Direction..'Send the praise'.../It doesnt get any better than this!!!! Beautiful funky soul gospel, and the bass playing is world class.
  19.
Well, I arrived home 3 days ago from a vacation of a lifetime: 10 days in NYC. I went with my mate Marco, a keyboard player, and we stayed in Midtown Manhattan. Being jazz fans, we were pretty excited about visiting the famous venues, Blue Note etc; and experiencing some good music. I, however, wasn't prepared for such a bass extravaganza!! The first gig was in the Blue Note and was the Poogie Bell band. You probably have already heard Poogie....he plays drums for Marcus Miller... Well, Marcus wasn't there, but he had a fantastic bass player called Kevin Barefoot playing for him, a lovely Fodera into the venues own Aguilar rig... Next night was Blue Note again, this time it was a group called Metro, with none other than Dave Weckl on kit, Gerald Veasley on bass and Randy Brecker on trumpet. Oh, and Will Lee was in the house, so he went up for a jam... Then on Monday night we took a little visit to the 55 Bar, where Jaco and Mike Stern used to tear it up. Mike was playing that night, but this time with the African Jaco, Mr. Richard Bona: On wednesday we went to see Lettuce (for those not in the know, they are one of the hottest funk bands out) on a ferry that went up the hudson. Probably the best funk gig I ever saw. And the bass player is called Jesus. He was in Bass Player last month I think. During the week I payed a little visit to Rudy's bass shop and got my sweaty mits on a a few jems, some lovely modulus, an mtd or two, a sukop, an f-bass....but the highlight was a 'modified' '77 jazz. Sublime. So, to some up, in the space of a week I met 3 bass legends playing with fellow world class musicians and saw various other ensembles that were all individual musical gems. Only in New York! I recommend it to anyone!!! Cheers, Craig
Poogie Bell is fantastic. You should check out his album 'Thinking Outside the Box' tis a great album..I would love to go to the New York bass works and try those out..Rudy's, arent they the place for Pensa basses? I am so envious bro, that i think i hate you!!!!!only kidding, that is where i would love to go..I cant believe you saw all those legends..Mike Stern, Richard Bona,Will Lee..Good on you man... That chap Jesus, did he have a beard and play a Deluxe Jazz? Thanks for the pics bro!!!!!
