1. I work in a music shop. What I find most with people, especially younger ones, is the need to play everything at top speed. Drummers are terrible for this. Don't forget we've heard it all before, so we don't judge anyone. Just be yourself.
2. Another shameless plug for this gig.
3. Nearly Dan play the Jazz Cafe in Camden on Sunday 13 January. Featuring special guest James Knight on sax, as seen in this month's Bass Guitar Mag.
4.
Did you get anywhere with that Venue I suggested, Pete..??
Not yet, John
5. Haven't played this for ages (used to be our encore song), but pretty dure Jake has it nailed. There are some notes and then a riff.
6. Nearly Dan enter their sixteenth year at the Robin 2 in Bilston on Friday January 4, and at the Jazz Cafe in London on Sunday January 13.
7. Sorry, Im crap and posting this on mt phone. Just google what i Said.
8. This is now on Youtube in its entirety. Google 'Marcus Miller bassday uk, Amazing insight into a world class bassist, and very funny in many parts.
9.
Back in the 70s slapping and other percussive styles of playing were far less standardised as a technique and so players developed lots of improvised and individualised versions of the style on their own . It's important to remember that this was an era before the information overload we all enjoy nowadays where you can get on the internet and find out anything . There weren't any bass magazines ect , or indeed much music on t.v so it was much harder to understand and copy what was going on when your favourite player was slapping . Nowadays you can go to Youtube and have a private lesson with Victor Wooten . There was a technique some bass players used back in the 70s that was similar to chucking but used a rigidly-held thumb to pick " through" the strings similar to Victor Wootens double thump . Jerry Barnes demonstrates the technique on his Lick Samples video and it sounds really good but I can't really get the hang of it myself !
This is indeed true. In the seventies I had heard some slap but hadn't a clue how it was executed. One night I was watching the Crusaders on Whistle Test and saw Pops Popwell slapping. To me it looked like he was pinging the strings with his fingertips. So I spent a few weeks trying this. It was only later, and with very sore finger ends, that I realised he had been using his thumb. And even then I didn't know what I was doing and had to work out the style myself.
10. I don't like it. He doesn't make the song breathe.
11. Thought I'd share this. A guy rang our shop today to see if we had an Epiphone EJ200 acoustic guitar. To cut a long story short, he'd been to a shop in Stafford, where they offered him the guitar at 350. He said everyone on the internet was advertising it at 269. The shop owner said it was 350 because he had ordered it from Germany. Turns out he wasn't an official Epiphone dealer and he had ordered the guitar from Thomann and tried to make some money on it. When the customer said he was charging way over the internet price of 269, the shop owner said those guitars had dodgy bent necks. Absolute bullishit. Why do some dealers try to dupe the public and risk getting out of business?
12. Beck all the way. Page is definitely sloppy and a bit of a widdler. I wish I'd written Kashmir, though.
13. Nearly Dan play their last gig of the year at the Met in Bury on Saturday December 1st.
14. Last minute bump up for this gig.
15. Bet Warwick weren't too pleased about his choice of bass.
16.
Taking music too seriosly .......Steely dan ........UGH , I am sure they composed songs by throwing a bucket full of random chords in the air and playing them in both the order and the time sequence that they landed .
Can I ask what kind of music you're into?

18.
Bugger! Already got a gig that night
We'll be that way again next year.
19. If you already know the band, then you won't really care about the quality. If you are watching a band for the first time, the poor quality may put you off.
20. I've just read a post on Facebook by an old saxophonist band member of ours. He's bemoaning the crap quality videos that people film on phones at gigs and then posting them on Youtube, stressing that they are detrimental to the band and can actually put people off booking them. What do you think? We have quite a few of these on YouTube. Should we be grateful for the free publicity?
21. Nearly Dan play The Guildhall in Gloucester on Saturday 17 November.
