1. I've always wanted to do an all Italian Bon Jovi tribute and call it Bon Giorno. Shall I get me coat?
2. Excellent stuff. Wonderful bass tone.
3. If you play other bands' music, you are classed as a cover band. Most jazz bands and Orchestras are also cover bands. If you cover one band,s songs you are immediately classified as a tribute band. We are lucky in that Steely Dan never ad an image, so no need for wigs etc. If you enjoy the music, then it doesn't matter what the band or artist looks like.
4. Beautiful.
5. That gig in Bath was one of our all-time favourites. Thanks for being there, mate. Hope to see the odd Basschatter at this gig.
6. On my bass I boost a liittle bass and treble and a healthy amount of mid. I use my pickup pan to change tone throughout the set.
7.
I'd rather watch Karaoke (which is essentially a cheesy track with someone singing for fun, comfortable with the knowledge that they are awful!) than watch a truly average covers/tribute/cliche band strut around like they're the next big thing with egos to match and a total disregard for the punters who are paying their wages.
But that band will still have invested in gear and rehearsal time. It's the X Factor syndrome. For every sh*t act there is a decent one that's been replaced and had a missed chance, all for the sake of entertainment.
8. Nearly Dan play the Sage in Gateshead on Saturday September 8.
9.
Just for that quip, I may just pop down and see you!
Thanks for coming to the gig, mate. Great venue, audience and sound. One of our favourite gigs ever.
10. Last minute bump up.
11. I wish I'd written Teen Town.
12. I Su subscribe to BGM and look forward to every issue, despite its faults. The obvious problem with Bass Player mag is, for me, not knowing who players and bands are across the pond. A difficult job all round. It must be hell for the editors and publishers.
13.
The biggest problem with fretless players is that Jaco set such a precedent with how people now perceive the fretless bass should be played. In reality we all play bass differently, we all choose different notes and rhythmic figures that encompass our own musicality. By Jeff Berlin's logic, every fretted Jazz bass player should sound the same too. But they don't.
For me, Pino pushed it further than anyone else.
14. When Jeff Berlin said he doesn't play fretless because everyone sounds like Jaco, I think he had a point. For me, Jaco deserves the title of world's best ever bassist. His technique, attitude, composing skills, and sheer musicality confirm this.
15. Jazz bass, back pickup, fingers.
16. Worse stil, we could have been in the shower with York5stringer.
17. Nearly Dan play Chapel Arts Centre in Bath this Saturday Sept 1.
18. Check out the Portrait Of Jaco cd, which has very early recordings. You will hear how he developed his signature style and sixteenth note riffs.
19. I know what you mean. Nige. I don't think we'll see an original bass voice much, as I think it's all been done, and schools are churning out players like this.
20. Would like to get my hands on one, though.
21. There is a review of a Fodera bass in the new BGM. Seven grand. So, two Roscoes or Ken Smiths, etc. Or the Fodera?
22. When I posted recently about Kid Charlemagne I was surprised to see that Jay-Zee had used a sample from the song. This prompted me to check out how many other artists have sampled Steely Dan. There are loads, virtually all hip-hop artists that have done so. So what are your thoughts on this. Is it plagiarism, or is it artists being ceative?
23. Try listening to something like earlier Cameo stuff. It will get you into a different type of slap groove, which might help trigger ideas.
24. A subtle bump up for this gig.
