1. Just had the latest issue. That Ritter bass looks suspiciously like a guitar to me.
2.
Pete, you like what you like and other people like what they like.
Totally agree. But it's good to see other opinions.
3. No offense to fans of Peter Hook and Joy Division, but I just don't get them at all. Can anyone explain?
4. Thanks for the advice, everyone. I can't believe how much these Warwick basses are new.
5. I'm not sure if this is the right category, but I have a friend who is looking to sell a 1991 Warwick Thumb thru-neck, bubinga/wenge. Serial number is G303391. It's in very good condition for its age. He's a bit of a technophobe, so he hasn't any photos at present. I was just looking for a rough idea of what this might be worth. Any idea?
6.
Depending on the sort of music you play, your role as a bassist is normally much more limited than that of a guitarist, and also very different. I don't know why people think the instruments are related as much as they do. They look similar but that's about it. They have very different roles. But let me tell you, playing guitar well is not f***ing easy, and a guitarist will have to play ten times the notes the bassist will in a normal gig. And I believe it really is 'easier' to learn bass in the sense that if you have a bit of natural ability, I think you can learn bass to the standard you'd need to be in a band much more quickly than you could guitar. The reason I prefer bass to guitar, is that the bass can do so much more for a song with ONE note than a guitar ever could. I think Bassists need to be very clever musicians to make the bass work in a way the song deserves. And like BRX said, it's all about the song anyway.
Great post. Nigel
7.
I've found that many of the guitarists I know just got stuck at a point where they can play mediocre rhythm and poor lead - most of them are waiting to wake up and be Jimi Hendrix..I know this is down to attitude but there is a tendancy to be "good enough" rather than "really good". I've also found that once they have a repertoire of covers they fall back on these rather than look to be original.. ..anyway how difficult can it be to learn a few chords and then string them together in a different order..? When I started playing I never wanted to be a guitarist - far too many of them for it to be "cool"..
Good post.
8.
Have you really heard this more often than owt else, Pete? Cheers, Nige666
Certainly have.
9. I always say that, yes, you can get by and play in a band with root notes, but technically there's a massive amount more than guitar out there, especially technique-wise.
10. I've been working in music shops for a long time, and the phrase I've heard the most is: "I'm thinking of taking up bass because I've heard it's easier than guitar." This might be technically correct initially. Any thoughts?
11. We have been wondering whether to cover this track but our singer keeps saying the key is too high for him to sing. I've listened to the bass part and thought thank God for that, as it's amazingly complicated. Has anyone ever tried this?
12.
IMO the music that you choose to play is just as important as your ability on your chosen instrument(s). As a band RHCP don't really do anything for me so while Flea may or may not be a fantastic bass player because I don't like the music he plays I find it hard to appreciate his playing. Also I'm a great believer in the importance of the song and the arrangement over the instrumental prowess of the individual musicians. To me if as a musician you are more noticed that the songs you are playing that means either the songs themselves are weak, or you are over-playing. Either way IMO you've failed as a musician.
Nobody believes that the song is king more than me. I hate overplaying. However, in my opinion, Flea comes up with parts that are busy yet complement the song beautifully. I have rarely heard a player do this as well, even over players like Jack Bruce and Geddy Lee in a three-piece setting.
13. He"s very inventive and totally original. Just a really great player.
14. I've just been watching a Chili's live concert and think that Flea is an amazing player. The way he grooves and fills out the sound for a three-piece is astonishing. Why do people knock him?
15.
A complete and utter waste of space and time.
Well I watched issue 3 and was impressed, especially as it's free. My only complaint is having paid eleven quid initially and not having access to the extra features.
16. I've watched/read issue 3 of iBass mag and have to say it's great. Couldn't access the extra stuff, even though I paid the eleven quid original fee.
17. I always liked their first album and thought the band was really cool. However, the latest album is probably the worst I've ever heard. They've turned into an auto-tuned pile of cheesy pop pap. Terrible.
18. I think when you listen to Verdine White's part, it takes you by surprise. Who would have thought of that bassline?
19. Is in the chorus of this song, in my opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwc0AW67CmA Any more suggestions?
20. Quick bump up for tomorrow's gig in Buxton.
21.
This thread has been done before. Trujillo is a great player. Would metallica hire a slouch? The Nashville country players are great. Try playing that stuff with the right feel. The only player I think that gets way too much praise is Peter Hook.
