Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones, IMO best value for money at that price. Going in a slightly different direction tone wise, I think the Marcus Miller jazz is right up there too.
How could we forget that, the Marcus is a stonking piece of kit, really great bass and lovely sound. They also go for a very good price on ebay etc. Well worth a look and they outplay basses double the price.
+1 on the Sandbergs. But if i was spendng that sort of money on a Jazz I would be on the phone to Jon Shuker about one of his stock J types here: http://www.shukerbass.co.uk/
Hey, I tak eit the GB did not blow you away in the end? I agree with what most have said above, and I must say that Mr Shuker has some awesome looking Jazz basses for sale and they are less than you are looking to spend. I just had a look in the for sale and would suggest any of the following: Lakland DJ4 £700, couple this with and East preamp, or stay passive if thats your thing, either way a stonking bass and it looks great and they certainly do growl. Fender Roscoe Beck 4 £700, AWESOME bass, I have a five string and it is extremely well built and has massive flexibility in sound, and mine certainly growls like a jazz. i can not reccomend these enough, well if its good enough for Roscoe Beck..... Also it may not growl but if you liked teh GB there is a standard (pretty much a spitfire I think) on the forum for just under 1K. The lakland JO is a great bass too and I slightly preferred it to the DJ, but that was just neck and body shape, nothing else. My experience of Sandberg is very positive as well, but definately check out the shuker site.
The GB shots of that bass. Snakewood fingerboard by the looks of things... talking really exotic wood on that particular spitifire then...
Yeah it has a snakewood fingerboard and the top is just beautiful, it really is a very special instrument. The owner is only selling because he has a cluster of vintage fenders and musicman as well I believe. Got to say I would choose this over any fender any day of the week, but thats just me.

Hey, Cool you will have a fun afternoon with this bad boy. When I tried it it needed a clean and some new string but it was still awesome! They have Eden amps in stock now so you will get a brilliant idea of how it sounds. I personally thought that £1700 was a weenie bit high but I don't know a huge amount about New GB prices. I would say £1500 or somewhere close would be a great price. Don't get me wrong though I still think it is worth the money, and you will not be thinking I got ripped off if you buy at this price. It is simply fantastic, but maybe if you threw some cash their way they could do you a deal and get the numbers down. Good luck and i hope you like it. let us all know how you get on. Cheers, Nathan

Hello, looking at your location I am going to make a pretty big guess and say that it it is the spitfire for sale in Aroundabout sound in Cheltenham. If this is the bass in question it is mind blowing. I was so near to buying this bass and the only thing that stopped me was the fact that I really wanted a 5er. It is apparently a rare beast and Bernie apparently made 2-3 with the same piece of wood (not exactly the same piece) for a show of some kind. 2 were sold and this one was left. I think that was the story behind it. It is very punchy and very clean and harmonics just ring out on this thing. I was in the shop for at leats an hour playing it. I would say it doesnt growl like a standard Jazz, but it has so much more. I have played a lot of high end basses and this just puts everything else to shame in terms of build quality and sound. It is smooth responsive and the EQ is very powerful. You would never have a problem cutting through with this. All this is of course if we are talking about the same bass. This is the one in cheltenham: EDIT: just read previous thread properly it is this bass. IT IS FABULOUS and they will most liekly do you a deal they are by far the best guitar shop I have ever been to.

i would say go for a Squier VMJ but seriously look into the Classic Vibe, in my opinion it is a better feeling bass and I nearly bought it on the spot when I picked it up. I have not had a feeling of joy like that since I picked up my Roscoe Beck V for the first time. The only thing that stopped me was the lack of a string!
I understand, as far as Western conceptions allow, what he was going for but poor execution is poor excution regardless of cultural heritage. This kind of world fusion is much more up my street; metal and traditional Japaneese instrumentation together at last. http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=RERXiliJfdI
Interesting to see everyones views, but not a patch on these guys INHO, I loved the playing in this thread, well spotted, loved it!

PHEW! I was worried that it was some super amazing technique/bass movement that I just wasn't getting. Ah well it put a smile on my face and made me feel more talented, shame about the wasted Fodera though.

I apologize if this has been posted before but check out this video, I think it has to be the worst bass video I have ever seen. Excuse me if this is supposed to be clever but this just looks like Fodera abuse, should we report him? That whole Rage album is classic musicman, and aeroplane was going to be my reply before I even read this reply.
The Artcore is a fine bass but not the best choice if you are after a "metallic" kind of slap sound. It can do warm, thumpy, old-school funky, fat-bottomed bass but Marcus Miller style is probably not its forte. That said, you could always try putting on a set of nice, fresh, light-gauge stainless steel strings and see if it helps. I still think you´d be better off with, say, a Squier Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified Jazz.
I agree with the comments above, try some new strings. It may help but by what you have said you are not comfortable with the instrument so I would definately suggest one of the squier classic vibe or Vintage modified basses. I have tried both and they are SUPERB for the money, far better than basses costing a lot more. I have to say I dont 100% agree with just sticking with whatever you have and you will be fine. A better set up, better playing bass will in my opinion help you as a player and make you feel better because you are not fighting your instrument all the time. A squier jazz with some quality strings will also be great for slapping and the neck profile will help for those with smaller hands. I hope that helps a little, and good luck finding something your happy with.

That is an awesome bass, I have been a big fan of them for a while now. Can I ask, how much?, where from? how does it sound? Well done sir!
So, how long has he been using a Tobias?
He has been using Tobias for years as far as i am aware. He used them back when he was playing with suicidal tendancies. I remember seing him in an old bass player mag around 1999 and he was using tobias then. Also in an early bass guitar magazine interview he was also pictured with a tobias. useless info there but hey ho!

J-Bass with P-neck? P-Bass with J pup configuration?
NJE replied to solo4652's topic in Bass Guitars
Hello, A fender Mark Hoppus Jazz bass may be worth a look. It has jazz body with a Precision Neck but has a P bass pickup. with a few extra pounds you could get a jazz pickup put in at the bridge and you would have the classic P+J pickup combo and a snazzy looking bass too. They turn up quite regularly on ebay for not much cash. -
I started with Message in a bottle, great tune and it flows while you are trying to sing, great fun.

Creative Electronics in Haverfordwest. I spent many a day in there bashing guitars and Sarah who runs it is awesome, really chilled out. Its not very big but sometimes she has some fun stuff in there, and I always loved playing acoustic basses in there (she always seemed to have one at least). Nothing in Cardiff or swanse worth seeing to be honest.

What can you charge for a New Years Eve Gig?
NJE replied to phsycoandy's topic in General Discussion
NYE should be a nice little earner. I used to play in a local covers/function band and we used to get a minimum of £200 each (5 of us). We did the new years celebration on our local town square and there were 6000 people there and because of all the extra gear we needed we were on about £350 for the night plus we got free booze and food all night wherever we went for the night. I would say free food, free booze and at least £150 each for a good nights entertainment. -
very interesting banter going here, I would say this, I have owned 2 USA fenders now and both were stunningly built and far suppassed the quality of many other basses I have played with the exception of a USA Lakland, USA Sadowsky, and a custom Warwick. No Ibanez, Cort, or MIM Fender ever came close to the sound and quality of build of my two, but i know that is not always the case. I dont know what the new Fender USA basses are like because basically I have no desire for any USA basses they currently make, and the only bass they still make that I actually like is the Marcus Miller which is stunning and only made in Japan. My Roscoe Beck V, is a beautifully built instrument, and IMHO is better built than any Lakland Skyline, which even thought they are great basses I think are only just worth their secondhand value, ( I have seen mint used "proper" american laklands in the states for less as new skylines over here). My point (I think) is just try a few, its a personal thing, a lot of people on here may not like USA Fenders but, you may pick one up and it could blow you away both in sound and build. Personally I would never buy a Lakland Skyline (good basses but after playing a American one, no chance) but folks on here swear by them. Cheers and good luck

Really interesting to hear how people feel about "the one" and GAS in general. I think I am just a bit of a magpie and am drawn to new shiny things. I do love my current bass more than anything I have ever played before which is a big thing for me. I think I just need a second bass (not unreasonable) and I think that should be an all out Jazz with every bell and whistle on on it, whether it be Sei, Shuker, Sadowsky etc.... I suppose its a bit like finding your perfect partner (im talking people now) you find the one you love and want to spend the rest of your days with, but occasionally you have a cheeky second glance going down the highstreet (or is that just me too )

Hello everyone, Not long ago I picked up a new bass and for a couple of weeks I have been completely besotted with it. Everything was fine up until about 4 days ago when I started browsing the for sale threads here and on TalkBass. It got me thinking about the whole big question and probably the most important question any real man/woman has ever asked, "will I ever find the perfect bass"....... I have been GAS-less for over a month and was really happy, but now find myself wanting a new Jazz 5er and have been craving basses along the lines of Alleva Coppolo, Nordy, LowEnd Jazz, Elrick, and some custom UK instruments. I started seriously thinking about whether I should just keep changing basses until "the one" comes along, but then will I ever find that one bass that makes me go "thats the boy for me". Is it just the end of the rainbow I am chasing or can I actually find the bass that cures my GAS once and for all? So I started thinking "I will change my bass again" I will get something else and see if that is the answer and see if that will cure the dreaded GAS. I looked around and started pricing up some instruments, and then in a strange moment of quietness and calm I saw the bigger picture. I LOVE basses so much and as far as I am concerned knowing about basses and equipment is a important part of being a musician, knowing your tools and what is available to you I suppose. I have so much pleasure reading this forum and looking at basses and dreaming about what basses I would like one day and then it hit, if I got the perfect bass and cured GAS once and for all WHAT THE HELL WOULD I DO FOR FUN? I have so much joy GAS-ing over gear, if that was taken away I would not know what to do with myself, bcause with all the will in the world you cant practice all the time. My conclusion is this: I like GAS I want GAS and it will be a sad day when it goes and I dont want something new, because for all the money I spend and money I lose on gear I love it and love basses and I hope I never find the perfect bass because it would take away one of lifes little exhilarating pleasures.....the thrill of the chase! So there we have it, the ponderings of a bored office worker. Does anyone feel the same?
