1. Hello, I am having a bit of a mental overload trying to work out how I would wire up two Aguilar GS112 cabinets with my Eden WTX260. The Eden has one Speakon and two 1/4" Jack speaker outputs and the Aguilars have one Speakon and two 1/4" jacks on their back panel, but I have no idea what will be the best way to connect it all up. My head runs most powerful at 4ohms and I know that in theory, two 8 ohm cabs together should give me 4 ohm load, but how will I know that my head is actually 'seeing' 4 ohms? Can I daisychain them, so: Speakon from head to jack on cab one, then speakon from cab one to Jack on cab 2? Will this make my amp run at 4 ohm? EDIT: I posted the above questions and got some good advice from the gentlemen below so I know kind of how I will set things up so nothing explodes. However I still have a couple more really stupid questions I cannot find answers to. 1. If I use the Jack outputs from the head to go to the cabs, do I have to use both of them or can I use just one Jack and one Speakon? Will this still be in paralell? 2. Does it matter which of the two Jack sockets I use on the back of the cabs to go in from the head and out to another cab or are they the same, and both work as "ins and outs"? I am sure I used to know all this......
2.
Ohhhh I'd love this back Nathan and I have a GS112 for sale.... But I must resist and pay credit card off!
You know you want it really! ha ha. Sent you a PM about the Aguilar.
3. Hello all, Up for sale / trade is my EBS ProLine 212. Its a fantastic cab, simply the best I have played and owned. I have had so many comments on its clarity and punch, even from the drummer in my band who has little interest in anything non-drum related. So why am I selling it? Simply, it is just a little too big for me. I have just moved and it is a nightmare to get up my desperately narrow staircase, and I struggle to get it in the boot of my girlfriends new Polo without collapsing the whole inside of the car. It seems quite a petty reason but when you practice twice a week it becomes a real pain. I will make a point of saying it is not a weight problem. I find these cabs very light considdering they are not Neodynium and on a good day I can actually do a one handed lift with this. It is in excellent cosmetic and working condition with only a few minor scuffs on the plastic corners (I suppose thats what they are there for). These are £653 new at Bass Direct so I would like something in the range of [s]£325 [/s] [s]£295[/s] £285! for it. I have a new cab now so really need to shift this. I am willing to ship but collection is preffered and I can also discuss meeting for a sale somewhere if need be. Happy to answer any questions, just send me a PM. 4. It might be worth having a look for a Eden WTX 260 or 500. I have the WTX260 and it is a fantastic amp, big sound plenty of volume for most band situations, plenty of tone shaping with a real clean modern tone to it. It also has L/R Aux in and phones out which is fantatsic for silent practicing, as well as tuner out and mute button. I love mine, it can do sparkling top end when I need it to or bid dub bass and most things in between and the best thing of all is that it weighs about 3lbs and goes in my gig bag. I love it and am actually thinking about going up to the 500w version if the 8 piece band i play with starts doing bigger gigs, they are so loud!
5. Just a quick not to say if you get a chance go and check out a chap called Marc Broussard. Some fantastic Soul/Blues/Funk music with some really classy bass playing, and one of the best recorded bass tones I have heard in ages on his latest album 'Keep Coming Back'. His bass player is a Nordstrand/Nordy endorser I think, thats how I found out about Marc. Link to myspace: http://www.myspace.com/marcbroussard
6.
Got a gig soon with a funk outfit...got a list of tunes..i know most of them like Parliament, Stevie, JB, Chic,Isley b's...Trying to get them to do Do I Do!! maybe next time..anyone play any of these...? also anyone got any good vids of them/anyone playing them..its always great to see different takes on em Gimme some lovin / Stevie Winwood Taxman / The Beatles I wish / Stevie Wonder Hard to Handle / Black Crowes or Otis Redding Knock on Wood - Eddie Floyd I'm a Man - Spencer Davis Group It's Your thing - Isley Brothers Get out my life women - Lee Dorsey Take me higher - Sly & the Family Stone - Superstition - Stevie Wonder - Give up the funk - Parliament Play that funkee music - Wild Cherry Livin For the city - Stevie Wonder Sex machine - James Brown Good Times/Rappers Delight - Chic sugarhill gang
Just started playing a couple of these with a band recently. Although I usually try and get stuff by ear to start with, I did find that typing the name of the tune and 'bass' afterwards in youtube usually yielded some good results. Also Marlowe DK's websites were really useful for some tricky parts I couldnt hear properly on some recordings. Its good to see how other people play the tunes too. Superstition is great fun to play and reproducing the original synth bass (I dont think it was originally a bass guitar) on 5 string is great fun and I actually quite like the original line. The band I am playing with want to change the key and do a medley with play that funky music, I am sure that it has been a million times before but its a bit of fun. Some fun tunes there, let us know when your playing, too many rock/metal bands and not enough funk.
7. Wow this post got brought back from the dead! It seems since I originally posted there have been a few more company's building 5 string Precisions and with some active EQs and extra pickups, the most recent I have seen are the new Nordstrand P basses. I have also noticed The LowEnd making a kind of 'Super P' as well, but these are £2000 basses plus. I know Sadowsky make one as well but only the NYC basses as far as I can see. I think the point of my original post was that at the time (and still actually) I would love a reasonably priced 5 string P bass with maybe a Jazz or soapbar (Nordstarnd big single or fatstack) at the bridge and maybe a simple EQ. Squier made a fantastic Jazz V deluxe, why no 'proper' 5 string P (I know Squier made a 5 string P with 2 jazz pickups). I think the closest thing to a more stock off the peg super P is the Fender Precision Plus mentioned above and they dont make that anymore which is a shame as I remeber it being a very good bass. Anyway no real point to what I am saying. I just wondered why The Jazz bass look and layout has been so heavily tweaked and modified for 'Super Jazzes' (sometimes to the point where they dont sound much like a good old jazz) but noone has done it much to the P bass until recently? I know there are plenty of companies making superb Precisions, but I still wouldnt mind seeing a 5 string P/J Precision for under £1000 (without modifying). Maybe as has been posted before there is simply no need for it. Sorry rambled on a bit incoherently, it is friday to be fair.
8. Top spec Alleva Coppollo Jazz 5 string, but throw enough money at Jimi Coppollo to make a neck with the most unbelievable birdseye maple, with that really expensive rosewood (Dalbergia Negra? might as well go all out) fretboard with blocks and binding. Tasty!
9. I was just having a browse at some high end bass manufacturer sites as you do, and came across these lovely looking things on the Nordstrand site, the white 5 string precision makes my knees go all wobbly. Don't really see much on here Nordstrand wise, lot of love for them on TalkBass though.
10. Well I caught this by chance last night and have to say I thought it was bloody great. I have never been much of a Muse fan but I thought the show last night was superb and and through my speakers I thought the sounds was brilliant for a festival gig. When Chris and the drummer kicked in it felt like i was being beaten up it was so powerful and BIG sounding. I thought the bass was a little low but the drums sounded great! might just be down to what setup you have with your TV.
11. I will echo suggestions made above, keep your hands dry and clean the neck regularly. I keep a beer towel or duster on top of my amp at all times and just keep my hands dry and polish the neck if things get super sticky, but it doesnt happen that often. If you play energetic music and sweat a lot I can highly recommend using sporty wrist bands, I used to use one with my old hard rock band and it made a huge difference and kept the sweat away. I agree with BigRedX though I think it depends of the type of glossy finish used on the instrument some brands/guitars are better than others.
12. Thanks for all of the posts, loads to think about. I think the first thing I am going to do is try some flats on my backup bass. The songs might not have been played on flats but I have never tried them before so as Beedster said I feel I owe it to myself to try some. If it does go some way to re-creating the sound then that is a bonus. I also think I will be less concerned about nailing the exact tone and as OldGit and chris_b say, find something that can be well heard and works in the band and just get a good overall approximation. Cheers for the suggestions chaps, just need to have a look around for a good 5 string set of Flats now, where did that search button go....
13.
Aha i knew it was you..i saw you on youtube with the Progress and put 2 and 2 together....im erm.... Andrew that played with The Fennel briefly before...Pete and CO (may) have mentioned me...i saw you play at the Frog... Anyways i was thinking you had a Fender jazz, with my recommended tone adjustments....I take it the OW Jazz is active..if so, do you know what pre is in it?
Aha your Andrew, I too saw you on youtube playing with them, ha ha small world. They have been through so many members! I saw a video or picture with you and a bass i did not recognise, if it had been your rather nice Sei I would have made the link straight away, not many of those in Cheltenham. The Overwater has a John East BTB-01 stacked bass/treble control with Vol/Bal. Its a good unit but I am thinking about having it changed for some more flexibility, maybe the full U-Retro Deluxe with active 'tone' control. That might give me a few more classic tones as well as the super modern. Dont you have a East Pre in your Sei?
14.
Dont think any of those bassists used flats on those recordings..roll off the tone on your jazz..is it a fender...The Mc Fadden and White head tune sounds like its played on a P Bass..so does the Bee Gees track... That tone for a jazz, i would roll off the bridge and roll down the tone... Hey NJE i didnt realise you were a cheltenham man...me too!! Hey do you play a Overwater at the moment...what band have you played for recently?
Yeah been in Cheltenham for about 2 years now, great place with a good local music shop too which was a bonus when I moved up. Anyway yes I have a Overwater Jazz at the moment but used to have a Progress 3, and I was/am playing with a local band called the Fennel Sitaution, its good fun and they are nice guys but I have now just joined this soul/disco type band which hopefully will gig a bit more and potentially make some cash. Anyway back on topic... I was wondering whether a few of the tunes were P basses and the dead-ish sound was more down to the recording quality and my ears. Plus I know Bernard Edwards used to use a Stingray so dont knwo what I was thinking putting the Chic tune down. I think perhaps I need to experiment a bit more. I tried panning off the bridge pickup and it does help but it still sounds too vibrant, maybe its the new strings and the bass is very bright sounding, considderably more than my old Progress. Might also just be a case of more practice and a technique adjustment.
15. Hey all, Just after a bit of advice and some opinions with regards to these tunes. I have just joined a 8 piece soul/funk/disco band and am in the process of learning all of the tunes. I have been given a few tunes to get started on and although making progress with the actual notes I am having some issues with getting the sound. The following tracks seem to have very stoccato, burpy, dead sounding bass tones and I was wondering if it was the way the bass was recorded or technique or am I in fact listening to basses with flatwounds on? Having never had experience of flats I am wondering if getting some would help me get the sound? My jazz sounds too zingy and bright for some of these tunes despite some EQ fiddling. Songs: Aint no stopping us now Le Freak Boogie Wonderland Lost in Music You to me are everything Disco Inferno You should be dancing Any Ideas?

Wow, these look really good and I even quite like their own design basses as well. I shall definately keep an eye out for these, any idea on price?
17. Congrats! Progress 3's are stunning and the build on them is absolutely phenominal. When I got my old one (gone now) I must have spent about 20 mins just looking at it. I know what you mean about the 36" scale, it really does control that B string well and it doesnt take too long to get used to either. I have a Overwater Jazz at 35" now and that is a bit more aggresive on the B but I quite like that. You have to get some pictures up to support the Overwater "porn" thread now so we can all have a good look.
18. Currently using some Sennheiser HD 205 headphones for practicing and they seem to do a good job with clear bass and nice top end, even with the B string. They were a gift but I know they couldnt have been more than £60. To be honest Sennheiser usually deliver at most price points in my experience but if you are feeling flush Monster Beats by Dr.Dre are supposed to be the absolute dooh dahs but you wont get much change from £300.
19. OBBM all the way, wouldn't ever go near planet waves again, not even if they gave them to me for free. I would sell them and buy OBBM!
20. I would guess she has Eva Gardner playing with her. There was an article on her in BGM recently I think.
21.
Hi, We used to use the standard 'Gator' bass case - though they have changed them a bit since then, so you'd need to check with supplier... However we now supply all our 35" scale J basses with the bigger (pear shaped) 'EBP' Hiscox case - I can supply you one if you call myself or Laurence... Regards, Chris
Hi, Wow thats fantastic, many thanks for the reply. I got the bass secondhand with a butchered Hiscox so glad to know there is something out there that will fit properly. As soon as I get paid I will be in touch and get an order placed. Thanks again, Nathan
22. Hello, hoping someone might have some experience with this. I have not long aquired a Overwater J Series which has a 35" scale and am looking for a suitable hard case for it. I have a brand new Hiscox but the bass is about 1-2 inches too long for the case and I was just wondering if SKB or any other 'off the shelf' cases would fit before I have to have something a bit more expensive made. I know there are some really good gig bags available but I dont really trust them, although they will be considdered as a last resort. Thanks in advance.
23. Hiya, First of all yes you will need dimensions and weight for the couriers as if they get there and its bigger and heavier than you say they will then probably ask for more money. Courier wise there is a massive thread with reviews and scoring system for different couriers on here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=couriers Personally I highly recommend APC Overnight and have used them a couple of times with no problems and they are extremely quick. I have also recently used website called P4D.com which was suggested by another memeber. It was very easy to use and fill in the info and I could just pay online. They have accounts with a couple of couriers and then pass on the rates they get to you the customer. I sent a bass last week through them (via DHL) and it was all very simple and the bass got there safely so cant fault them so far. Hope that helps a bit.
24. I hope you dont mind me taking this a little off topic but I was wondering what hard case (if any) you use for your new OW Jazz? The reason I ask is that I have just aquired one secondhand and unfortunately it does not fit in my very nice new Hiscox case, its about 1-2 inches too long. I am just wondering what off the shelf hard case will take it. I might have to get padded bag or something if there is nothing available. Many thanks.
25. Good thread, enjoyed reading through it. This got me really thinking and going back a few years. So here is mine based on what worked best for me and was most playable. 1.
