Whistle test apperance. Oldfield on bass. I think there may have been some recreational drugs involved!
That's the line up I saw. I thought it was 1970 but could easily have been 1972 or any other year. -
I'm 99% certain it was the '1981 Daily Mirror British Rock and Pop Awards'. I seem to remember Hot Chocolate playing and, I think Madness. I also remember the crowded Green Room falling silent when David Bowie walked in - everything else is a little hazy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvMGMqa1Igw
Well, I thought I was... but it looks as though I dreamt the whole thing
Maybe it was the BAFTAs or OSCARs or something.

Very nice, but if you buy anymore you're going to need a bigger bed. -
Well, I thought I was... but it looks as though I dreamt the whole thing
Yes, bizarre, it jumps from 1977 to 1982.
Errr, this advert is about 4 months old. Shadows...mmm...no connection for me. Did some good work by supporting Burns but playing Fender on record. I think Hank had the same monkey glands injected into him at that Swiss clinic that Cliff did back in the 80's.
... and where did they both get the hair from?
Was The Brits on? Only a couple of days ago, I I was looking for info about the 1981 British Rock and Pop awards - Can't find a thing - it's as if it's been erased from history.
Were you in them Steve?
This is quite surreal for me, as it's usually me getting frothy mouthed at people slagging off Gibson basses. I'm not sure who's genuinely upset, who's taking the mick and basically why the world appears to have turned upside down
It's only the pickup being turned upside down not the whole world. -
PS I'd be willing to bet a large sum that no-one, ever, has ever been able to demonstrate any meaningful 'flexibility' in any fender supplied BBOT. Unless they used a hammer.
... or maybe thay've got a screw loose?
-
No, they're Z pickups, able to be coil tapped (hence the mini toggles).
Ah, OK.
The science of sustain is very simple. Any energy transferred from the string to the bridge will reduce the movement of the string. If the bridge moves over the metal plate then this would do it as would any flexing of the plate itself. The standard bent metal bridge of the traditional fender would appear to have several weak design features. The plate itself can be very thin and fairly flexible steel. The grooved roller bridges are mounted on very flimsy grub screws which finger pressure can move easily over the shiny chromed plate. The grooved roller doesn't seem to be the best mount for the string either as it runs through a length of groove rather than pivoting on a knife edge. Whether this adds up to anything significant compared to the losses in the neck and body I have no idea.
... and so the greater the sustain properties of the bridge, the lesser the resonance from the body. While I'm unconvinced that it makes much difference to the outcome in the sound, you can't increase sustain without reducing resonance.
Is it OK to be SG and long scale?
Are those Thunderbird type pickups?
-
Can someone explain the science as to why they would change your sound or sustain please?
The more the bridge allows greater sustain then the less the movement of the string will resonate through the body wood and the more sense it would make to have a plywood bass ....
-
Yes, I tried that but ended up with my hand at the wrong angle. No pleasing some people, I know...
Fair enough.
-
I don't like the BBOT as it seems to rub my hand in exactly the wrong place - I rest on the bridge a lot when playing (with a pick) ...
That seems reasonable grounds for changing a bridge but it's also in part what the original bridge cover was for.
-
A replacement bridge makes very little difference to the sound of a bass, IMHO. It may be the placebo effect, who knows? I'd get a replacement bridge only for cosmetic and/or aesthetic reasons. There is generally very little wrong with the stock bridge on a bass. Given the high price of some replacements, you'd be better off investing the money elsewhere. Again, IMHO.
This is my experience too. As for extra sustain, I've never had a bass that needed more sustain, it's usually the other way around and it needs careful muting.
-
I really like the old 32" medium scale Aria TSB basses, but prefer the older ones with the 4 tuners in a line headstock.
I had a TSB550 for many years. Rather wish I still had it.
