1. One songwriting method - indeed a very common method - isto know exactly which songs are your influences and so to avoid copying too closely.
 2.
Are there any rules to determine this kind of thing , like chord progression / factors for drum beats / melodys etc ? If it's purely subjective , then it's all based on jury's opinion (and maybe love of a particular artist) and the amount of money the defendant has , as surely you can't sue without being worried about losing ?
It's melody and lyrics that hold copyright. No copyright on chord sequence or bassline or anything else.
 3. If you are changing gauge only, but manufacturer and model of string are staying the same, then a heavier gauge will commonly increase tension and lower compliance. If you are changing manufacturer and model of string then, whatever the gauge, there is no way of telling without knowing which strings - manufacturer and model - and knowing how that model is constructed.
 4.
whut?
Like instead of playing chord tones 1-3-5-7, play it 1-7-5-3 or whatever .. even add in 9th or 11th or 13th. E.g. root-fifth sounds different down to the fifth than up to the fifth and if you are changing key one might fall under the fingers easier than the other. So a key change can be an opportunity to play melodically different lines instead of just moving shapes around.
 5.
... Better to know the fingerboard in its entirety.
Yes
 6.
As has been mentioned there's a few things to consider: 1. String gauge. Thicker strings need less winds on most tuners. I always want to see two full wraps or more on the post... but I undo the string and clip if overlapping starts to happen.
I said above that I had six winds on my Lakland Decade E string but it's actually seven winds - with no overlap.
 7. Or just move your and up or down the neck or just play it in a different position. And if you do play it in a different position, then just like a guitarist playing different inversions of the chords, you can change the feel by playing different inversions of the chord tones.
 8.
Capo. Job done.
... and before anyone moans about capos ... if you can use frets then you can use a capo.
 9. A spanner at the front of the headstock and a screwdriver at the rear is common.
 10.
... It won't be easy as I would think your to young to get what The Beatles were about.
What are your age limits, high and low, on 'getting what the Beatles were about'?
 11. If you're stringing a Fender style headstock with a string tree for the D and G strings then the number of winds on those two strings matters less. On E and A strings more winds gives a better break angle at the nut. I put a new set of Pyramid Gold flats on my Lakland Decade last week: E string = 6 winds A string = 5 winds D string = 4 winds G string = 4 winds
 12. Talking about 1965, that was when a new Fender was about three months wages.
 13.
... I still think 95 was 10 years ago sometimes ...
You're lucky, I still think 1965 seems about ten years ago.
 14. Headstock seems OK to me. Nice colour too.
 15.
Thanks. I thought I might get told off if I put it in General.
'General Discussion - If its bass or music related and doesn't fit one of the other more specific forums, then put it here.'
 16. ... and, like The Idle Race, the Mellotron came from Birmingham. BTW, in what sense is this thread Off Topic?
 17.
Had a quick look through the thread - can't see any post that remotely suggests "young people are crap". But, hey-ho, moving on... With regards earphones: They are convenient, they take up very little space in your pocket... but that's about all they have going for them. I use a pair of Sennheisers that are considered to be pretty good - IMV they're ok, but I wouldn't call listening to music through them a "particularly enjoyable experience".
Hey ho indeed but whatever.
 18.
You may or may not be right - not sure what that has to do with this thread though!
It was exactly to do with the post in this thread that I quoted. Hence, I've no idea what you mean.
 19.
I think too many people assume kids don't know what music should sound like.
There's rather too much 'young people are crap' on Basschat. Disappointing.
 20.
Yes, I got that. But I was thinking about a 4X12 or a 4X10 column format bass cab, as proposed by dood recently - you'd get a very small footprint but still have the advantages of an 8X10, i.e. having a driver at ear-level so you can hear yourself on stage.
Back in the early 70s I knew a bassist who played a Gibson EBO through a Laney 100 and two 1x18" cabs stacked. It was bassy and ear-level.
 21.
The right sort of 4X12 column would make an excellent bass cab!
I meant to say,of course, that they were Elgen 4x12" PA columns.
 22.
Filled with Fanes?
Very possibly.
 23.
I have recently acquired a bass and have no idea what strings it has on it (other than that they are metal as opposed to gut or synthetic) or how old they are. If I were to describe the winding at each end by colour would it be possible to identify them that way? The reason I ask this is because, as I develop my technique I may want strings that produce, say, a warmer, or punchier, or more sustainy, or louder (!) tone so it would be useful to know what I am currently using as a reference point for further exploration. Perhaps I should point out that I am working towards playing jazz, and pizz only, for now at least. If this is any help the silk at the tail end is a darkish red, at the headstock E is green, A black, D red, G brown. Thanks for any help!
Could be Pirastro Obligatos. The peg end colours are correct. Is the ball end dark red with some black in it?
 24.
... Selmer Treble & Bass ...
Same here with a Selmer 4x12. Worked fine.
 25.
... Elgen ...
I had forgotten that make even existed but you've reminded me that the first band I played with had two 4x12" PA columns.
