Get a stock M9( (or M13) and have the room to add a few choice effects, maybe bass specific. I think there is an octaver in there aimed at bass, but from what Tayste has said, most work well with bass anyway Tony

I'm waiting for the M9 to downsize my rig! Adding a controller to a rack mounted M13 would defeat the object for me, plus I'd never ever need that many switching options for that many scenes in either the regular set my band playes or the covers set we occasionally do From what I've seen of the M13 (guitarist in my band uses one) as it is, it works fine! M13's are now down around £315, maybe less if you shop around, but I have seen one listing for the M9 at £379, all seems a bit odd price wise! T

My worry on this is UK prices, you may have read my comment on talk Bass regarding the shop the Line 6 rep' recommended, but they are still charging £399 for an M13 if you buy online, maybe it's cheaper in the shop, but it's still close on £100 more than you can get an M13 for if you shop around!!! T

RHT has got to be in the running for this as well I reckon! There are many bass lines off of the first two albums that will bring a smile to anyones face when you get them nailed, another fave of mine is "If I like it, I do it" I have two live recordings of Paul Turner playing with the band, his playing is incredible, Zender gets the credit he deserves for creating a lot of these lines, but PT nails them all and makes them even better with his own style. One of the recordings I have has a great bass sound and it's really up in the mix! T

You are indeed right, I remember reading that a while back, so who is the mysterious Mr X, Andrew Levy maybe? Whoever it is needs a serious pat on the back for some smooth and creative 5 string bass work, funky as 10 funky things in a place called "funky" T

Sei Jazz 5 I would also check out Nordstrand right now! 34" or 35" scale? I like to stick with 34" which does put a few basses of my list, which is unfortunate cos I miss some great stuff like overwater!! T

If 35" scale works for you, that overwater is well worth a look, otherwise, within your price range, I'd check out a used custom bass, i.e. sei, GB etc. It may be a waiting game as they don't come up too often! That is speaking as the very happy owner of a sei bass that was bought used for less than 1K, new price is over 2K! T

Both my basses are 5 string, but I consider 4 as the standard, I choose to play 5's as I like to have the option of varying some of the riffs I play with some lower notes, I was probably inspired to do thos by listening to the likes of Stuart sender on tracks like space cowboy! Got a gig in November with aziz ibrahim, he who replaced john squire in the stone roses and wrote a fair amount of ian browns first solo album. He's playing on two of our songs and we're also doing two of his tracks, corpses and my star, both of which go down beyond E. No problem on my 5, but I am told he will insist I play it on a 4 strin p bass, detuned, cos that's what sounds right! Tony
