A German-made Warwick 5-stringer for £349?
warwickhunt replied to Clarky's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Having had extended fiddlettes on a couple of 4 string Warwick Streamers I ordered a new Streamer 5. Call me Mr Silly but I figured it would be similar !!! It was my first 5 and I bloody hated it. Big , clumpy left hand full , string spacing from Satan's trick bag. Bah !! Plus , to my ears , it sounded like....nothing. Just nothing. I haven't come here just to knock Warwicks , more of a warning to not go 100% by your experiences with a Streamer 4 if you have any.
Totally valid point and goes for just about any bass. -
I've always considered that the Neo equipped cabs that I have owned (5 cabs in total) have a 'perceived' increase in mid-range. However, I have accepted that a lot of guys on here know more about the testing and measuring of these things than I do and if theoretically identical neo and non-neo drivers with 'identical spec' (and that's the tricky part) are placed in the same cab the only difference should be weight. As I highlighted the tricky part is that it'd be almost impossible to get a like for like neo and non-neo driver to do this comparison. I'm gagging to drop a neo 12" driver in my Aggie DB112 just to find out what the difference sounds like but finding that elusive identical spec driver would be almost impossible without loads of research and wedges of money... unless someone in the NE has a Neo 12 and wants to try

Off the top of my head, Eubassix is your man for Marleaux info. Might be worth a quick PM to point him at your thread!

Most people think that Warwick basses have passive pups because you have a push pull pot to go between active and passive; in fact 'most' (the $$ and one or two others are an exception) Warwick basses need a battery as the pups themselves have a preamp built in that needs juice. Try taking the battery completely out of your bass then see if it works rather than just switching between active / passive. I have a set of Wizard pups fitted in a Warwick, these are truly passive and are connected to an MEC preamp giving active EQ.
my Strat is a 20 year old (japanese) Tokai in tobacco sunburst with active electronics. I'm happy to trade but dont want another bass with a chubby neck as I have smallish hands. I was going to buy a Squier VMJ with the Ebay proceeds from the Strat for this reason. Anyone have an opinion on the Warwick neck dimensions? Other minor issue is the swapper lives in Essex and I only go there occasionally but thats not insoluble.
They vary from range to range! However I would say that quite a few of the BO cheaper ranges can have chunky necks and none but the earliest NT Warwicks are slim (I have an 87 Thumb with a neck that would rival any skinny Jazz and I've owned Streamers from the mid 80's that were likewise). Don't assume that a chunky neck + smallish hands = difficult to play. Sometimes it's the profile of the neck and/or width that affects how playable a neck is. re. value - It'd be really helpful to have a confirmed model for your prospective purchase or better still a pic.

There's an almost identical one for trade on the Forum. Amazing how many of the ex-SC/Reverb stock has turned up/will turn up for sale

It's been that long since you've ridiculed me Mrs. T that I thought you'd been sold accidentally as a Damien Hirst piece... sits back and waits for her to figure that one out -
£400 - £500 ya reckon... hmmm I have a feeling that bidder 2 will push it up past that if there are other bids
Saw Metallica on Jools Holland last night. Did anyone notice that he was using a Tobias 5-string? Or were my eyes deceiving me?
Wasn't taking 'that' much notice as I was struggling to hear that much definition in his tone... probably my AV system not coping well with the Metallica sound

How much swapping of basses goes on here?
warwickhunt replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
I'm sure it's actually in the T&C of joining Basschat that you will at some point purchase or sell a minimum of 2 items to another Chatter Don't even get me started on what I've owned on here (unlikely to ever rival one or two individuals ) or what was mine and now owned by others but I'd sooner strike up a deal with someone on here than a faceless entity on eBay. I'm not saying that it is risk free but those that drop in to try a quick scam can very quickly be 'outed' so long as you keep your wits about you. -
If I can't fix the treble pot on mine I don't suppose there's any reason this wouldn't drop in to my Fender P Lyte ? How is it likely to compare quality-wise with the factory controls ? Also (sorry for all the Qs) are the freqs a preamp operates at more fo a personal preference thing, or might one brand actually sound poor with the wrong bass that it wasn't designed for ? ta Tim Tim
Quality wise it potentially should be streets ahead of the factory job as the preamp alone retails at 200+ euro and I can't imagine a P Lyte would have had as high a spec pre fitted as that... I could be wrong! Either way it would be a matter of taste any way. A preamp should theoretically work with any bass but as you say the frequencies that it operates at may well suit some basses better than others but if you want something different from your P bass then I'd suggest fitting a non-Fender part might be what you want. Loads of people (inc me) have fitted Aguilar/Glock/Audere/Demeter/J East/ACG etc to there basses with no guarantee as to what the results will be but I suppose that the joy of buying used is that it isn't costing you a fraction of the new price and you can always resell it -
Cheers guys! This is the cavity Is the circuit board usually mounted to a post or anything on Warwicks?
The board is already prewired to the pots etc. it isn't hard-wired to a pot as such it is just connected by wires from your pots to the board so it would be possible to rejig the board as you see fit... if you have the know how However looking at your bass you have 3 controls rather than the 4 that are needed for the mid control. Of course if you are a dab hand with the soldering iron you should be able to easily resolder this to a stacked pot for the bass and treble... this would give you stacked vol/pan, stacked bass/treble and a mid pot. Alternatively a bit of research and you can do what you like -
i couldnt have a bass that didnt have extensive tone control, as i change quite alot probably why i hate passives
Why change? You have one sound in your bass that you like... use it and then use it lots more
They are the same bass to an extent, just people call them either 1 or One, Fender use 'One'. When the highway one first came out it had a nitro paintjob, standard fender bridge ect ect, but they released an upgraded version a few years ago, which has the same nitro finish but come with a BAII bridge and 70's logo as standard. No HW-1's are thru-body. On my GAS list currently, well have been for a few years.

the originals weren't nitro they were catalyzed lacquer - a kind of acrylic I believe
Come on guys I want absolutes here
-
Can someone give me the definitive answer as to what features each bass has and when they are/were in production. I really like the nitro finish (which I'm certain both have) and I have a deep dislike for the 'pointy/stabbing' bridge saddles that Fenders have, so would only consider one with a BA (again confusion is it a BA or BA II and I'm certain none are thru-body strung) but I've seen loads of basses here and eBay that appear to be described as one or 1 and they have either been retro fitted with BA or there's a rabbit away somewhere with the descriptions. Colour me confused Cheers

The fact that there wasn't a single bit of interest when it was on ebay @ £1000 gives you some fair indication that if the seller was prepared to let it go for £1000 minus any eBay seller or Paypal fees (which would be clocking on toward £80) indicates that they expected/hoped to net about £920 absolute top whack. I'd agree that a no hassle sale of £800 shouldn't be too wide of the mark so I'd be silly and offer £750... though don't try that with me Good luck
Hi warwickhunt Yup I have very seriously considered putting frets in it and keeping it, but I am playing 5 strings much more these days hence the post. If it had been though a harder life I would consider giving it the orange treatment that looks sooo good on your pumkin bass, but as the body is pretty pristine I just could not bring my self to do it. Just out of interest how easy is it to get hold of the warwick bell brass fret wire. Pete
Warwick supply their fret wire and it's even pre-cut the correct length/width for Warwick necks, not too expensive either!
I love the look of these old "racing stripe" Streamers. Wish they'd had the two-piece bridge on them though. I'm tempted but I only have another fretless 4 for trade, and currently no gear cash.
There was a transition period of about a year (88-89ish) where you got the predominantly wenge necks (ie thick wenge and skinny maple stringers) with 2 piece bridges, they take some finding but generally prices on these early Warwick Streamers isn't influenced by what wood and/or whether they had 1 or 2 piece bridges (or pup choice for that matter).

A bit of a bargain-at the minute!
My '87 Warwick Streamer has a cherry body and sounds very nice. Cherry appears to have fallen out of favour as a tonewood because its relatively expensive and doesn't look fancy but that doesn't mean it isn't a good body wood. It isn't the lightest of woods, so bear that in mind with body shapes / chambering. Alex
As Alex says, the earliest Warwick Streamer Stage Is were Cherry bodied then they changed to Maple. I have to say that the early Cherry bodied models are still some of my favourites Warwick pretty much came up with their slogan 'The sound of wood' based upon these Cherry Streamers.
