1. Just make sure you use a hard vibrator. I tried it with a soft, rubber one and couldn't get any volume or consistency.
2. Right, thanks. So, any chance of making and sending me a couple? If yes, pm me with the cost!
3. I know, but I won't tell. I'll only say I just got a ban warning on TB because of this
4.
There are comparative audio samples I posted on talkbass if you look it up. Don't ask me where, do a search.
Chill out, I didn't intend to, I think I have heard the samples, didn't know it was you. And thanks a lot for the detailed reply, but you could also just reply "you need to make a stereo cable". That's what I thought as well by reading the manual, I have just seen a couple TBers discussing about the full range mode that I thought that maybe there was a way to do it with the supplied cable as well. English is not my first language, so don't shoot me if I don't completely understand manuals!
5.
I use the full range output as opposed to the optimised output
How do you do that? I haven't given it much thought, but at first glance I couldn't really understand how it works.
6. IMO yes. I have barts in my Dingwall and I can't wait to get rid of them and put some Dingwalls in - but I have also heard Villex pickups and I would say they are equal, but maybe they are a bit more straightforward and "classic" sounding whereas the dingwalls have more frequency analysis - if that makes any sense. Still, I would also be very pleased with Villex, and I think you will be too.
7.
I know I'd have to remove the passive low-pass-filter, but otherwise, is there anything to stop me getting a pair of 15" bass bins to use as bass speakers for pub gigs where I don't want to worry too much about beer being spilt over my equipment?
Frequency Response - 20 Hz to 500 Hz
8. OK, I just had the chance to listen to the X2 through a big rig (iamp800 and SWR410+EBS115) and I liked what I heard. It was just for a minure or so and I wasn't playing, so I can't give a detailed opinion yet, but first impressions were great. I couldn't hear any real difference, my friend who was playing said it compressed the bass frequencies a bit, but we both felt that nothing would be noticable in a band setting. I mean, it was hardly noticable at home with just the bass.
9. No worries, if you're interested I can hold it for you. Think about it and pm me.
10. If it's a 410R, maybe a 410L or a 21012L might be the answer.
11. OK, now that it's not 3:39 am I can give a few more options for an outboard preamp: except aguilar, there is one from sadowsky and from fodera. There is also a kinda rare bartolini one for sale at TB, but I wouldn't recommend bart electronics - that's why I picked up the aguilar, so that I can bypass the bart preamp in my dingwall and go through the aguilar. I decided to get a glockenklang onboard preamp though, that's why the aggie has to go.
12. Well, if you're interested I have an outboard Aguilar preamp for sale for much less than the one you're looking at, and it's in pedal form, that is you can just place it on your amp and not drill any holes in your bass. It's the same as Aguilar's OBP-1 onboard preamp, only in a box. PM me or check the classifieds if you're interested. If not, well, sorry for hijacking this thread, but I think you should consider outboard preamps anyway if you don't want to purchase other parts, drill holes etc.
13.
You can't compare a 2x5" practice amp with a glocken rigg!!!
I wasn't comparing it volume-wise, I was comparing it tone-wise. Actually, I wasn't even comparing it, I just said I wasn't impressed by the tone. OTOH, now that I think about it, I only tried it with a Pedulla bass and I hate those, but anyway if the tone was to be impressive (to me) I guess I should have been impressed with a 4000 euro bass, even if it's a pedulla. Anyway, I'd rather buy a used Glock Soul top and a Glock 112 than the suitcase. As you said though, the flightcase might be a different story, but they're still a bit too expensive for me to justify their lack of volume (unless you really don't need volume), and I didn't lose my sleep over the tone either.
14. Well, I was intrigued by PJB designs until I tried a Briefcase (2x5" 100W). The tone was nice (didn't blow me away though, I guess I'm spoiled by my Glock rig) but the volume was just ridiculous (in a bad way). I even tried a suitcase, which is the 300W 4x5" and it didn't have enough juice for me. I miiight like to have the suitcase for home practice only, but at that price... nah... I wouldn't want to have the briefcase, unless it was given to me for 150 euro tops. And to think I wanted to like these SO much... (and yes, I could look at their biggest boxes, but then they weight becomes way too much for me - the neo series might be something to look at though)
15. I have one on order. My solution is to have a true bypass strip made. I will have 4 loops, one for overdrive, one for distortion, one for fuzz and one for the BMS. It will also have blend on each loop, so even if I get some pedals that don't keep the low end I will be able to mix in some of the clean bass signal. So, there's one solution for you.
16. Well, the villex passive system comes with a treble and a mid knob. You could also get the passive booster that was reviewed here, but it's not necessary if you don't think it is.
17. Well, if you don't mind a good passive bass, I would recommend Villex pickups. This would also save you the money of an onboard preamp (of course though they will be more expensive than usual passive pickups). Other than that, I love Dingwall FD-3s, but you should contact them to see if they can make a pair the size you want and how much it will cost. I've often thought about that, if I had to get a budget bass it would be a Peavey Grind or Cirrus with Villex pups...
18.
That's what I'm getting as well. Actually, I have one on order from the States, as soon as I'll get paid by the end of the month I'll complete the payment and have it sent to me... so I'll have a review in a little more than a month. Both on reviews and on specs though it's easily the best buy for the money at the moment.
Well, the X2 digital wireless arrived to day and I'm pretty impressed with it - although I expected nothing less from the reviews. I haven't A/Bed it against a cable, as I play through my studio monitors and they have no deep bass response, so I'll save that for a band practice (unfortunately, we don't play much lately, so this might take a while). What I liked is that it looks much more sturdy than I thought. It's plastic, but FAR from the usual kind of plastic you see in cheap effects etc. I also love the tone - or lack of. I can't hear any difference, although as I said the real test will be at the studio. So far, thumbs up.
19. FWIW, the Gator one comes at two sizes.
20. Yeah, the truth is that there are also only a few items here as well that sell at the price of thomann or lower, but it's getting better all the time. As for trying at a shop and buying elsewhere... I'll admit I've done it. It was with a guitar that cost 522 euro shipped from thomann, and the greek dealer asked 750 for it. Yeah, I appreciate the fact that he let me try it, but that does not justify 230 euro more in any way. If the difference is reasonable I have no problem to go with the local store that lets me try out stuff etc.
21.
In my current shop, we even have a few people who want us to repair things bought from places like Thomann, to which our response is not unlike you would expect if you'd bought from another shop. Take it back to them! Why should we have to deal with some thing that is not our problem, at our expense?
Actually, if you're official dealers of some brands, you are obliged to. There are brands that offer an international warranty, so you should know that when you started carrying them. If you're not talking about such brands, of course the claim is ridiculous. Anyway, prices in Greece used to be similar to UK's until recently (and they still are in many stores). But, with many greeks buying from thomann etc, they were forced to drop the prices... now you can even find some items cheaper in Greece than in Germany - how can they do it now and they couldn't a couple of years ago? As far as I'm concerned, thomann is the best thing that's happened to the greek music market in the last several years. And of course when I find a good deal locally I prefer to buy from them - even if it's a little more expensive than thomann, I try to buy from here to support the local market and of course to have support if something goes wrong. But when they ask for 50% more they can kiss my bass.
22.
I bought my Focus from Bob Gollihur (www.urbbob.com). I saved myself an absolute fortune (literally hundreds and hundreds of quid - UK retailers were taking the p***, frankly). The support from AI is great. I don't regret buying from overseas.
+1, I've never had a problem and I've bought LOTS of stuff from abroad. And, at that price difference, I'd rather risk it a little, after all it's only gonna happen once every several purchases. I don't know how flexible they are on the prices at the Gallery, anyway it sure isn't good advertising for them to post prices that are +50% of other european stores. Maybe they list them so high so that, when they cut you say 10% you think you're getting a good deal, when you're still getting them much more expensive than you could. BTW, wood and tronics is a small store, when you order from bigger german stores they usually pick it up for free from your home if something's wrong in the first 30 days.
23. Most are good suggestions (except aguilar! at least not the DB750 and AG500). I'd probably mainly look at the AI and EA stuff for transparent. However, I can't recommend buying at the Gallery - it's great that there's a store that carries these brands in London, but the stuff there is waaaay overpriced. I mean easily up to +50% with a quick look, which at 1000 GBP for example is a LOT of money. I would recommend ordering from Germany or Italy instead.
