Couldn’t see a feedback thread for Sam, so starting one. He bought my double bass and is a lovely guy and an an absolutely brilliant player. I learned a bunch of things about DB just chatting to him. Buy and sell with absolute confidence.

I’m putting my DB up for sale as another instrument has caught my eye. I bought this on here in 2021 when I made the jump from electric and in the opinion of my teacher and everyone who has played it I got lucky. It’s a large 3/4 (dimensions below) flat back and all carved. To quote the previous owner it’s been well gigged and likely to have been a school bass in a previous life. I play mostly gypsy jazz, so action is fairly low as it’s all pizz. The previous owner listed the bass’ pros as: new ebony fingerboard neck reset new end pin and tailpiece setup for jazz, low action and good strings looks lovely if you like the aged look nice sound He listed the cons as: Pins all around the top, but nothing to affect structural. Not worth taking out lots of scratches and marks Since I’ve owned the bass I’ve had a new adjustable bridge and Full Circle pup fitted by the Bristol Violin Shop. BVS (they’re excellent) also repaired one of the tuners which was loose and did a repair to the neck. The bass has just (as of 6/09/2025) returned from BVS who fixed a split in the back and reset the sound post. It’s ready to gig in other words. The strings are Spiro Lights which are circa 2 years old. It comes with a Westbury soft case which is in very good condition. Obviously I’d expect people to play the bass before they buy it and realise TA11 7DT isn’t viable for many. But I think the bottom line is this: she’s a wonderful war horse at an entry level price with a great sound, a newish Full Circle and nothing immediate to do in terms of set up. Please ask any questions. dimensions fingerboard width at widest point 9cm Nut to bridge length 106cm Bridge to tailpiece 19cm Body length 108cm depth 20cm Body width lower 76cm body width top 53cm Height from top to bottom of body 184cm endpin extends 29cm PS: the dots are ‘stick ons’ and are easily removed

Not sure the guy in this Paul Smith ad knows how to play DB, but it’s good to know the instrument is in fashion.

The peril of the manual gearbox
Richard Jinman replied to Richard Jinman's topic in EUB and Double Bass
So long since I’ve driven a manual it came as a bit of a shock. I was thinking BassChat could run a competition to see what’s the smallest car you can transport a DB in. No bungee cords holding down the rear hatch obviously -
Just rented a car and realised why DBs and stick shifts aren’t exactly compatible.

Great to see something filling the void left by the end of AI. Presumably small production runs, premium materials (all that wood) and the cost of importing from the US will make it an expensive choice in the UK, but I'd love to try one.

Orin O’Brien doco on Netflix
Richard Jinman replied to Richard Jinman's topic in EUB and Double Bass
And now an Oscar-winning documentary! -
I imported this gorgeous strap from Italia Leather in the US for $130. It’s chocolate brown on the outside and a kind of toffee colour on the inside with a suede sweat wicking, grippy surface. This is the long version (I’m 6 foot 2) but it’s adjustable. Barely used as I switched to DB shortly after buying it. It’s wide (4 inches) and quite possibly the comfiest strap in creation. Please refer to the Italia Leather site for full information. Postage at buyer’s cost, but shouldn’t be too bad.

I find a wind machine positioned in the wings to my left really helps me 'pop' from a visual perspective.

Lovely 30-min doc about DB player Orin O’Brien on Netflix at the moment called Only Girl in the Orchestra. One of her former students plays solo from Mozart’s Per Questa Bella Mano and it’s breathtaking

Acquired secondhand on here as part of my quest for the ultimate amplified DB sound, but left languishing when I decided that for me at least a simple Realist was sufficient. At the height of my love affair with the Schertler I went all in buying - direct from Switzerland - ruinously expensive accessories including a belt clip, the bridge clamp and a brand new cork for the business end of the pup. The preamp has obvious signs of wear on its surface (see pics) but otherwise this fiendishly sophisticated bit of kit is good to go. Imagine the fun you’ll have shaping the cork to your own spec, the gasps of admiration from band mates when they see the preamp attached to your belt. How would I describe the sound of the Stat B? Good question. Compared to a realist it’s definitely more DB-like. You can hear string noise etc, but unlike a mic you’re not going to pick up (pun intended) other instruments or trigger a gale of feedback. So yeah, very attenuated, but ultimately not for me. I’m hoping someone can use this as intended. This set is £490 on the Thomann site, but I’m offering it at a price that won’t leave you suffering remorse if it doesn’t turn you into Ron Carter overnight. Free postage within the UK.

I’m selling my spare AI head as I have a newer Clarus. AI are sadly no longer with us, but their amps are stellar in terms of producing a flat ‘hi fi’ sound that’s perfect for DB in particular. Little bit of paint loss here and there and one of the rack mount ‘wings’ is slightly bent. Otherwise good to go. I’ve copied this spec from online: It has (2) independent channels. Each channel has Volume...Bass...Mid...Treble...and Effects Level controls. Each channel has 1/4" Send and Return jacks. Each channel has combined XLR/1/4" I/P jacks. Each channel has selectable Phantom Power. Each channel has a Notch/Cut Filter with a Range of 30Hz-800Hz. Digital Effects include Hall...Room...Plate...Delay...Ambient Chorus...and Flange. There is a Master volume. XLR Direct O/P. Pre/Post EQ Selection. Mute Button. Ground Lift. (2) Speakon O/P Jacks. comes with kettle lead, but no case. Will be carefully packaged and sent at buyer’s cost… or pick it up in Somerset (TA11) or London.

DB player looking for band/musicians in Somerset
Richard Jinman posted a topic in Bassists Available
Been playing DB for several years now and gigging with a gypsy jazz band. Looking for opportunity to play jazz, jazzy blues etc with others. No set ambitions at this point. Oh, and I’m 60, so if you don’t want to hang out with someone you’re dad’s age that might be worth factoring in. I’m near Glastonbury/Yeovil. Cheers -
