  1. Me too…. But the ‘easy’ options sound great. And to be fair the number of people in the audience thinking ‘he’s leaning on root five a bit heavily’ is likely to be minute (unless you’re at a jazz club or a double bass convention I guess). Not that I don’t want to progress, perform chord subs on the fly etc, but I think one of the wonderful things about DB is that simple lines played in the pocket sound so damn good.
  2. are yours low or medium tension?
  3. Admittedly, I'm something of a newbie in regards to DB, but they all sound incredibly similar to me. I get a similar feeling when people discuss the nuances of red wine ... just can't hear/taste much of a difference. My cloth ears no doubt.
  4. That’s a great tip… thanks
  5. Yes, that sounds a bit scary. Pandora's box.
  6. ...and a very nice amp I see. Is that the v2 of the doubler? And I presume you used that cab with it?
  7. *By high price I mean you can't exactly buy 3 alternative sets and give them a go like you might with an EB.
  8. I'm acutely aware that string preferences are entirely personal, but given the high price of DB strings I was hoping for some advice from the more experienced players here. I've been using Spirocore Lights from day one on the advice of my teacher and clearly they're the go-to string for pizz, jazz etc. I'm playing with 2 bands btw - trad and gypsy jazz. I like/love the Spiros, but I have zero experience of any other string. Is there life beyond Spiros? I'm imagining something perhaps a little easier on the fingers without going completely gut etc, but which retains or even improves the Spiro sound. Madness? Should I just stick with what I know? Any thoughts appreciated, thanks
  9. I would love to give it a go…
  10. Love this…. Hard to run with a DB though
  11. My teacher calls it bass bingo… it’s when you’re carrying the DB across the car park and a punter says a) “have you got a body in there?” b) that’s a big violin or c) bet you wish you’d learned the flute.
  12. Thanks, much appreciated. I love my acoustic bass, but getting to and from gigs is becoming a pain.
  13. Ok, I should have searched BC before asking the question… this seems to cover the same ground. Yamaha SLB100 - still worth buying new? By JJB, May 21 in EUB and Double Bass
  14. With respect to the two gentlemen who are selling these EUBs on here at the moment, I’m wondering if someone can tell me the difference between them. Looking online the 100 seems to be larger and more DB-like, but I can’t glean much else. I’m playing a 3/4 size db and I’m tall (6 3). This isn’t a hypothetical… I’m very interested in getting a Yamaha slb. Oh, and I’m 98 percent a pizz player … jazz, ‘gypsy’ jazz etc.. thanks
  15. Interestingly, Gollihur says both AI speakers - upshot and double shot - are 'unavailable due to the closure of Acoustic Image'. I guess AI had no stock of those. All very sad.
  16. Just looked on the Gollihur Music site and they've got all 4 of the AI heads on sale with a special disclaimer that no warranty is available. I'm tempted nonethless although the 'sale' prices aren't that great once you factor in the high value of the US $ and any import duties.
  17. …. Sorry, for got Phil Jones gear.
  18. I’ve read that Rick Jones’ family has decided to close AI. That would punch a very big hole in the DB amplification market. I guess there’s the wildly expensive AER amps… any other ‘acoustic DB just louder’ solutions out there?
  19. Sadly not for me then … but lovely looking instrument for what seems like a very reasonable price
  20. Yeah, me too… e flat would throw me
  21. Bit of an anorak question (but of interest to me) is it D or E flat at the heel? Thanks
  22. Something very appealing about this… lovely, played in look….
  23. https://www.interviewmagazine.com/culture/eric-andres-tortured-relationship-with-the-upright-bass kinda, amusing… he’s trying to be funny obviously, but also knows his way around DB. Not often the instrument hits mainstream pop culture in such detail.
  24. I guess the real mark of a Bass Chatter is how they respond when something isn't right. I sold Clarky my avri jazz and a mistake (my mistake) in the listing meant it was too heavy for him. I was mortified I'd got it wrong, but Clarky managed (after some ups and downs) to sell the bass. I really appreciate his straightforward approach to what was at times a frustrating experience. Top man.
