In my latest band there seems to be a 'louder is better' ethos going on in rehearsals. Not sure why but I wear ear plugs and don't mind The drummer is the loudest I have played with and guitarist, who I have played with before, is just loud. I have recently changed my rig to a single cab - Barefaced Super Compact. So a 1x12 8ohm cab. Amp used for this band is a TC Electronic RH750. Last week was my first outing with this set up and I was told to turn it up from my default amp setting of around 10 o'clock on the master, so put the volume up at 12 o'clock. I think this is the loudest I have played during a rehearsal and probably louder than I have played at most gigs! I'm not sure what it going to happen when we play at the Dog and Duck but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Anyway my point is not endorsing the particular cab or amp, just to say that I found in my loud rock covers band that an 8ohm 1x12 cab is entirely sufficient if the amp is powerful enough and the cab can take it.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Paul S replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think these are not crap? Vantage VS600B. Not for me at the moment but should put a smile on someone's face http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vantage-Bass-Guitar-VS600B-with-Brandon-custom-case-/321757639321?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4aea3ff299 -
Nice. Not common, either. I am after one of these, but in black or white. What is the weight of it, please? I am guessing around 8-8.5lbs or so?

Anti-GAS, or being happy with what you've got.
Paul S replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
My mindset with regard to GAS has evolved. I no longer regard it as a bad thing and now decided that if I want something I'll get it. I have 5 basses I am really happy with and unlikely to sell any time soon. One in particular (mid 80s MIJ 32" scale Squier Precision) is best and favourite that I will keep until I stop playing. On top of those I have basses for specific purposes - an EUB, a fretless, a semi-acoustic, a U-Bass. I have several more that were bought for various reasons - some are currently for sale, some will be soon. I seem to have this insatiable curiosity and constantly find myself wanting to try more stuff. I bought two more last week - one arrived a couple of days back, one is incoming! For me it isn't about having basses to gig with - I have those already - it is about trying, playing and enjoying different basses. I keep them a while, then move them on - a kind of revolving door approach. Once in a while I get a real surprise like when I gave in to GAS for a Danelectro Longorn and discovered I love it (one of the five). Bottom line is I can afford it, I enjoy it, have (just about) got room and I have a wonderful and indulgent wife who says, when I start taking pictures to sell a bass, 'why don't you just keep it?' So when it comes to the point when I physically can't fit another one in I have a cull then start over. -
Replacing Berg CN212 with 2x BF Super Compacts... Thoughts?
Paul S replied to goonerjoe's topic in Amps and Cabs
So, yes, I don't buy into the whole thing, I'm afraid. Others might not agree, ..oh well..!!
So here is a novel idea - why don't you just leave it there instead of trolling the same old venom every single time a Barefaced cab is mentioned? It would make life so much less tedious for everyone. I mean, we all get it now - you don't like them. So, in summary. You don't like them? Fine. A lot of people do. That's fine. -

Next casualty in my gradual move away from active basses is my 1986 MIJ Westone Thunder 1A version 3, one of Matsumoku's workhorses. I make the point about version 3 as it has some features that are different to other, earlier incarnations of the Thunder 1A. So, glossy piano black - matching headstock and neck. Been scuffed here and there but, all things considered, in pretty good nick. As Thunder basses go, this is lightweight - around 8.5lbs. It has a long scale, 22 fret neck which is 40mm at the nut and has a dark rosewood fretboard - frets are fine. Active preamp on board that uses 2 x 9v batteries - from a centre indent you get bass boost one way, treble boost the other. Other knobs (which are amazingly all originals) are volume and a passive tone that works active or passive, which I like. Magnabass pickup, not split coil, switchable for single coil/humbucker coil tap operated via pull switch on volume pot, active/passive toggle. Chromed 'high mass' Schaller-a-like bridge. Lighter body means you get a slight neck dive, nothing serious. Full rich, woody tone. Slightly more nasal than the split pickup but nothing outrageously modern. Dial in a little extra bass boost from the centre indent position and it really sounds massive. For the price point I really don't think there are many basses that touch these, really well put together, great necks. This is my 3rd Thunder 1A but it has just been usurped by a medium scale passive Concord. I am asking a silly £120 collected from SS7, add £17 for insured overnight courier to mainland UK addresses. No case or bag but it will be well packaged. Can deliver reasonable distance/meet half way for fuel. Bought a Westone Concord from Benedict in a smooth, quick and totally obstruction-free transaction. Nice chap to deal with, bass arrived packed to withstand a holocaust. Really pleased with the bass. Look forward to doing business with you again, Sir.

Sold more stuff to Dunc. Got estate agents coming this afternoon so he can have my house, too. What can I say? Top bloke doesn't cover it. If you are contemplating dealings with Dunc carry on without hesitation or reservation. It has been, and no doubt will be again, a pleasure!

I like the idea of a single pickup but, as has been said, where it is makes all the difference. Too near the bridge and, for me, it gets too 'honky'. Too near the neck, like an Epiphone EB0 I had, and it gets muddy. I think the P is perfect spot for the sound I like. Yet, having said all that, I like the sound of the P/J or (some) other twin pickup set up when the middle position is selected, which must be aimed pretty much where I find a single to be honky. I wonder why that is?

Slimming down a Shergold replacement neck
but I'm really pleased so far how this is coming out
Not as pleased as I am, I'll wager. That stain looks lovely and warm - just the ticket. -

You made that all sound very easy, Andy! Fascinating stuff!
You name it, I've probably already caught it.
Probably best not to dwell on it, frankly...
