1. Related question - how do you pronounce the word 'timbre' A la francais? TAM-ber? 'TIM-ber'? Or anything else?
2. As you can tell from my feedback I do quite a bit of to-ing and fro-ing and always use Interparcel - the service using UPS. I'm on first name terms with the local guy The only time I ever had a problem it was because I didn't pack the bass well enough and a sticky-out control knob had the shaft bent slightly - that was my fault not theirs. Use lots of packaging!
3. String break on Fender headstock A string is not good and they can pop out of the nut. Happened to me with a bass some while back and, taking advice from here, it is easily cured by winding the string right the way down the shaft. Seems rather clumsy to do what he has done when all you need to do it unwind then rewind the string.
4. I had a Silver Series Precision and also a Jazz. Both had 'Silver Series' written on the headstock, afaik a silver logo doesn't mean silver series. Straight out of the case with no mods the P bass was one of the nicest I have ever laid hands on and I was totally stupid to sell it. Weighed around 8lbs, had a 40mm wide neck and a dark, woody tone.
5.
If you part it out I will have the electrics - pickups, pots, loom etc - please
6. Loud indeed. I have recently gone back to a Trace Elliot 300W head after flirting with an assortment of Class Ds. I would say it is louder than my current back up head - TC RH750 - and certainly louder than the one it replaced - Mark Bass LMIII Tube 800. And, for me and what I am looking for, a country mile better tone. At a recent very loud gig I played it through 2 x Barefaced Supercompacts. That was fun. This combo has to be one of the biggest bargains in the classified at the moment.
7. Didn't Steely Dan do something similar, or am I getting confused?
8.
ants like cakes
Tits like coconuts
9. I think we had Barefaced Schmarefaced, though Never even picked up a WAL but I think they look nice. Especially black ones.
10. If you part it out I will have the electrics - pickups, pots, loom etc - please
11.
they are about the same weight as a standard 4-string bass.
And as long as a piece of string! I have seen the figure of 4.6kg mentioned somewhere on the interweb, which could be about right? I like the shape very much but probably too heavy.
12. Just been listed. I wonder how heavy these are? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tokai-Talbo-Bass-free-postage-in-UK-via-Parcelforce-48-/301767085886?hash=item4642b84f3e
13. I do have a spare decal, as it happens. PM me your address and I'll stick it in the post.
14. Drummer in one of my bands is a big fan of Ringo. Reckons a lot of his technique is due to him being left handed but playing a right handed kit - he starts off round his kit leading with his left, rather than his right. Or something.
15. The body is scaled down a bit, yes - pretty much exactly the same dimensions as a Stratocaster body. Possibly not what you wanted to hear!
16. Final drop to £300. The refin and U retro cost me more!
17. Truss rod adjustment working is something that think of as a given when buying a bass. I don't even ask the seller if it works as I assume it does. If it doesn't work then it is a serious issue and the bass goes back. But I can't imagine it is that common, really?
18.
You're only as good as the weakest member of the band really...
I don't know. I have played in bands where there was a weak keyboard player or a weak guitarist but both times the drummer was good. I think if the rhythm platform is solid then it can carry other weaker players - who may or may not bring something else to the party other than virtuosity. But a band with a bad drummer is a sorry thing.
19. Bit of a bargain, I reckon http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Epiphone-Thunderbird-Pro-IV-Bass-Guitar-with-Gig-Bag-and-Strap-/111794645862?hash=item1a077aeb66
20. I heard this for the first time last week and the tone of the bass hit me straight away. Nice, stripped bare kind of toon, if you like that kind of thing, and (IMHO) a refreshing change from the big production numbers you usually hear in modern country music. http://youtu.be/4zAThXFOy2c
21. Wow. Looks like a scaled down body, too. How much does that weigh, please?
22. Sold a bass to Paul in a very straightforward transaction. Wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again! Cheers Paul
23.
Recently and for the foreseeable, I will mostly be taking the lightest.
24.
You see my friends it all depends on the mood I'm in.
This. Any of my basses would sound ok with any band, so I just see which one beckons when it comes to going out of the door.
