I'm a tad surprised that no-one on the side opposite the 'should read' part of the discussion hasn't mentioned the talents of Stevie Wonder 'cos apparently he doesn't (read that is - unless there is a form of braille 'notation'? - Serious query that BTW)

I guess it will go a bit quiet for you on the forum whilst you transact the move and we should also allow you time to settle in there because I suppose you'll be a bit upside down for a while. Good luck.
Of course you can gig every night of the year by learning a 12-bar shuffle in E
I did try that once but to save both the band and the audient (singular) getting bored we thew caution to the wind and learned 'Crossroads' in A - really brightened up the set.

Oh dear - we are descending into the pit now - can we not just accept the point I made earlier - I LOVE listening to bands that have that feel without music stands but I also accept that if a musician wishes to make a career out of music he or she is best advised to become a proficient reader either in the classically trained orchestra direction/ as a session person allied to a recording company/or as a writer and arranger of original material etc... There's room for everyone.
we all know nothing of any value has ever come from classical music
Best bass lines ever written? - J. S. Bach (Yes I did get the irony)

Most of the bands I rate don't put up music stands at their gigs - it's about feeeeeel (for me, poisonally speaking of course) BUT I admire tremendously classical musicians whose dedication ensures they will always work.
I had a blast on this bass yesterday... tone, action, weight are all spot on and it is lush!
I also had a go on this bass yesterday....tone, action, weight are all spot on and it is lush! (Can you pay direct into my account WoT? - I don't do Paypal) -
Probably fairly obvious - it depends on the gig. One of my bands specialises in Stax/ Motown stuff so of course it's passive P-bass time. If I got the call for more up-to-date funk I would use a maple-necked active cicuit Jazz. So it's horses for courses (if you say that fast you could follow it up with 'of course they do that's how little horses are created')

If it's a barrel jack, replace the beggar with a quality (Switchcraft) one - they do have a limited life as the contacts on the inside are so much weaker than an 'open' jack socket.
very slighly of the topic of selling the bass....do you need to drill new holes to get the schaller bridge on from the origional bridge? been meaning to change the bridge on my 5 for years now and never really got round to it
The Schaller 3D-5 bridge has three holes and the 'middle' one is not actually central so it does involve new holes being drilled - no great hassle when you consider any unused holes get hidden under the plate itself but if you are fussy they can be plugged/filled and then forgotten about. Be aware that this particular model Schaller may not be appropriate for every 5-string - it's maximum spacing 'string to string' is 70mm (can go narrower).
I would absolutely, unreservedly recommend Neil Harland! He was my teacher at Newcastle College a couple of years ago, Also Ian Paterson, he's a mate of mine and an absolutely crackin' guy! Also, Neil is indeed the salt of the earth!
I know both Neil and Ian - both splendid chaps and if you get to see Ian you will also see a rather splendid (if I may say so myself) 6-string bass I built for him in American walnut.

Replacment Machines for Fender Highway1 & Mex
The Bass Doc replied to Greene-Mann's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've replaced the tuners on a few Mex basses but found it best to keep the chunky bushings they came with - as long as you are fitting better quality tuners themselves, I find the quality of the bushings of little significance. -
I had a bit tinker with this this morning (quite a feat, given that I'm terrified of 5s). It played very nicely indeed...
Thanks for your comment - I was rather hoping that Crazykiwi would follow up his interest so that I could strike a deal which would include the Burman 4x12" cabinet which apparently used to belong to Sting when he was just a local bass player before he joined the Old Bill.

Hi Amafi - I'm in Newcastle and have woked on a few Hohners in my time. I should be able to help even if it involves fitting a non-standard part that will fulfill the function. Feel free to PM me if you wish to take up the offer. And of course welcome to the forum!

Getting a pickguard made from a picture
The Bass Doc replied to allighatt0r's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've made loads of non-standard pickguards and would say that the picture you have provided is fine but an accurate job could only be done with the bass itself being made available to the maker of the guard - forget trying to scale it up. You could of course make your own template from card which could then be sent to the maker but again I would say accuracy can only be guaranteed with the instrument in front of the maker. -
I did go to school with the son of a guitarist named Mickey Bennison
How strange you should mention him! Just recently he got in touch with me to carry out some work on two 6 string thingies and THEN came back saying he'd taken to noodling a bit on bass and could I perform a de-fret on a Tokai bass he had acquired. I have now completed the job and will be seeing him shortly to collect.
Thank you Mr S, for a pleasing reminder of my native tongue
Nee bother HH - I have a 4year old son whose normal twang is kinda 'standard' English but I make sure he keeps in touch with his roots by repeating the number of the bus that passes his granda's house - yes it's the Fowerty-fower.
I could do with a drop of nostalgia.
But you know what they say....nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Correction to above - I've just Googled Gaslighters and it can't possibly be Kenny's band - far too MOR. Now, Googling RnB Spitfires gets you an idea of Ken's stage presence (at least of old). There's a pic of him lowping about fower foot in the air. I will find out the correct name of any current band and suggest some of us go along to watch and make a point of walking out halfway through the first number - gets 'em every time.
Kenny Potter???? Now there's a name from the past. He gave me 4 bass lessons when I was at school - that must be 20 years ago. I stopped going as my parents stopped providing bass lesson money and told me to get a job!! Self taught since then!
Your parents must have thought 4 lessons were enough - one per string. WoT - I can recall Kenny playing with the RnB Spitfires many moons ago although I'm sure he will have knocked about with others. Not so long ago I think he was having an outing with a re-hash of that kind of line-up under the name of the Gaslighters - local pub scene e.g. Star Inn, Westgate Road.

Yep, both neck and body are USA original - bridge obviously Schaller, knobs non-original brass and pickup is a replacement - might be USA but looks newish and the original would be expected to have grey formers rather than black. All-in-all a good buy which can only be made better with systematic replacement of genuine parts. Filling in the routing for what I assume is a battery comp. on the back is a tough one however so maybe a return to something active would be preferred.

What colour scratchplate on a vintage white P bass
The Bass Doc replied to boabskiboab's topic in Bass Guitars
It appears that answers that begin with the letter T are forbidden therefore my suggestion would be SHELL (preferably of the tortoise variety)
