1. Interesting. I'l try have a look back for that
2.
There is also this sort of thing, I got one of these to run my desktop speakers: http://cgi.ebay.co.u...em=390166545300 Its 75w/side, but prob can get bigger for more money.
that is along the lines as I'm talking about! Just with a jack for an input, and a speakon as an outpout. The magnum 44 pedal is almost perfect too, but just a bit small (power wise). The casing could be x2 or x3 the size and still fit nicely into a gig bag. Am i barking up the wrong tree with this idea? Surely I'm not the first person to think its abit daft having a preamp on the floor, then one again on the amp itself. I suppose the price of small class D bass amps are cheap enough for this maybe not to be an issue but for me, its more to do with simpler the better... less things to go wrong
3.
What do you mean by cheap? I've tried one of these and for pure power, they're pretty good. £350 AND most importantly, the amp itself is removable from the speaker and can be used seperately. http://www.gear4musi...0W-Bass-Amp/C61
I fully understand There are plenty of sub £300 class D bass amps. What I mean, is there such a thing as just a pure class D power amp. Not a rack amp, not a bass amp.... just a power amp in a small casing. What it really needs is one 1/4" input > 300w > 1 volume knob > speaker out. Or just double that for a stereo amp. I could by a class D bass amp, but I'm then running two preamps.... one in my pedal, one on the amp. Why not just have a unit that doesnt have a preamp. I'm just throwin an idea out there. I've seen on audio forums people do such things for car and home stereos etc.
4.
There's a 100w rms amp kit at Maplins: http://www.maplin.co...amplifier-46467 It requires a few extra bits, like a heat sink, transformer and an enclosure, but it still works out quite cheap.
Interesting! I have no skills when it comes to electronics.... but surely that plus heat sink and transformer would fit into a nice week box. Even two, make it dual output!
5. You're right. Theres tonnes of ones with preamps. But with so many FX out there that are stand alone pre's or multi FX that are amp sims, I'm amazed there isnt something out there thats the size of a thesaurus doing nothing but powering! Less components, cheaper for bassists?
6. A small cheap Class D power amp? Purely hypothetical, I could easily use my pedal board as a preamp and just plug directly into a power amp. I know there are tonnes of class D bass amps, but i really dont need any EQ or anything else, just power! A quick google search suggests there aint, but something small purely to power the signal would fit nicely into the front of my pedal board case, and that would be one solution! any suggestions? Fraser
7. I've got a 4 string Fender Aerodyne Jazz. In the past 3 months I've noticed a slight click occasionally between the neck and the body. Its such a small movement that it doesnt affect anything about the bass. I've honestly though it was more to do with the strap buckle than the actual neck, but its definately the neck moving in the pocket. Anyone got any idea why this might have came along? Or even if its something I should worry about? Bear in mind this has only been noticed in the past few months, it could have been like this for years! Is this the situation where a bit of card board in the pocket would fix it? Any suggestions appreciated Fraser
8. Another +1 for what tractor said ( and no doubts others) Some items are brilliant. Some are not so good. IME I have used a micromixer for over 5 years (and it was 2nd hand then) and its still going strong. Used everyday for my pc sound. I've even got a V-ampire Head which my mate gigged for a few years - perfectly useable. Almost any studio I've been in there has been some sort of behringer rack gear, and my mate swears by the patch bay thing they do (oh and the ADA thing aswell) On the other, you need to think about cost of maintenance. Becaus eits so cheaply made, if something does go wrong then it can be uneconompicable to repair. Alot of it is built with prebuilt compononents, so if one tiny bit goes, a full section needs to be replaced. I'm basing this on experience of an amp of theirs that went, and the repair man said this. I cant say its the same for all products but I'm guessing it could be similiar.
9. Thats tremendous news! I've used Thomann lots of times, and always been chuffed with their help and post-sale service. They are the first website I check for items now.
10. IMO I think decals are simply done to deceive. In fact I'd find it embarrassing. Even if I completely admitted its a cheap fender copy when someone asks, I'd still be embarassed as there will be a few people out there who could tell it was a copy who didnt talk to me. Its the same as walking down the street with a pair of fake Nikes, or a fake jacket. It happens to get the 'big name' for cheaper. Its simply wrong.
11. I love hearing These isolated tracks. I'm sure its the same for most folk on here, but whenever I've recorded I generally hate hearing myself playing in isolation, due to fret buzzes, timing issues and general sh*te tone issues etc but as others have said, thats what makes the music breath. Makes it human. Its nice to hear other bassists (especially iconic ones) having the same issues that I face when recording. I would love to hear jamiroquai (I'm thinking the album syncronised mainly) in isolation, before any production.
12. I've already seen this on facebook today! People are dicks sometimes!
13. Next time I get a chance then I'l open it up and see how the tweeter is connected. They normally are connected with those clips anyway rather than hard wired arent they? I fully understand that fuzz and tweeters dont mix, but since the cab doesnt have the option of turning it off, I was thinkng that perhaps that turning it to minimum was actually turning it off... perhaps not. I may be tempted getting a few nice speakers anyway, I really like the size and dimensions of the cab so thats another reason I dont particularly want to rid. I know that speakers are tuned to certain cabs etc, but I should be able to find speakers that are suitable.
14. I've got a cheapo harley benton 2x10 in my practice rig. It rarely gets use at gigs, and its really just used for back up, and so that I've got the option to get a bit more volume if necessary. Something I've noticed though is that it really doesnt take distortion or fuzz well at all. It sounds perfectly fine as running clean, but the fuzz instantly makes it sound tinny and fizzy. I normally run my 1x15 cab alone at gigs and my fuzz and OD settings sound really nice, and my sounds also work well going through other amps I've tried, so I'v narrowed it down to just the HB cab. Anyone else got experience of this 2x10 (or any similiar cheapo 2x10) and found the same as me? Also, when I turn the tweeter down to minimum, do you think this turns it off or just down to a minimum as this could be the cause of the fizz? Considering the amount I actually use it, I'm not going out to buy another cab (plus I'm skint), but you reckon buying a slightly better set of speakers could improve the sound? I personally think it could very well be the tweeter causing the problem, but I'd rather not go rewire it etc without any proof! Any help appreciated. This is the model: HB 210T
15.
Bugrit! My LH500 started to do this, or something very similar, last week - instead of the usual 12 seconds to come up, it sometimes took significantly longer but was OK once it got there. Then this weekend, setting up for a gig and it did it again, but this time it came on - I heard the protection stuff click, then it clicked again...and nothing. No output, nada, zilch. Luckily I had the HA spare in the car, so no problems there - the show must go on! - but it looks like I'll be putting the Thomann 3-year warranty to the test in the next few days:(
thats a pain in the arse. Atleast you have a back up and a warranty! I couldnt find anything else online with other LH500's doing the same, so lets hope its just a couple of isolated incidents rather than a design flaw!
16. My mates' guitar school put on masterclasses. They've had some high caliber guys doing sessions. But this is a big one!
17. Have to admit, I've never got on with synth pedals, I've never got them to track as well as I'd like. The digitech synth wah is an excellent option too. Perhaps about £40-45 second hand, and you dont get the option of an expression pedal, but it can do some excellent things! Its decent for getting a simple envelope filter type sound too, so its really versatile.
18. It certainly is. Although I'm skint, I will likely regret selling this... Bump for price drop.
19. I have my zoom r16 for sale just now. It has a 8gb memory card and this gives tonnes of recording time. It records over 3 hours at 16 bit with 8 simultaneous tracks. Great for recording gigs and practices. I absolutely love [s]it[/s], but I'm a bit skint just now, and this is something that can go. Its in perfect working condition - its got a few little gaffa tape marks and a touch dusty but I'd class it as very good condition. this can also be used as an audio interface and a control surface - Can't say I've even tried using them for that. All I do is literally plug the usb cable in, transfer the 8 files over to my PC (or however many trakcs I've recorded) and then simply drag them into Reaper. So simple. It comes with cubase le 4, a usb cable and PSU. No box or case but it'll be well packed. photobucket seems to be down for maintenence just now, but as soon as its up il upload photos. Heres the SOS review.... they can explain things alot better than I can http://www.soundonso...les/zoomr16.htm SOLD
20. My short lived rock covers band did it, ITs a great tune, and in the right venue it'l go down a treat. I wouldnt even consider it in my normal covers band though (the usual suspects ie the killers, stereophonics along with 60's and 70's stuff).
Nice review, great piece of kit, especially if you were one of those who bagged it for £100 from GAK over xmas. You forgot to mention that you need a PhD in quantum physics to be able to work the damn thing. I've had it for a couple of months now and haven't taken it to band practice yet cos I just can't get my head round operating quickly in a live situation!
I have to admit, I find it pretty easy to set up actually. If a preset needs tweaked I can pretty much go exactly to the right option to tweak it. The biggest pain in the arse for me though is for example you have the expression pedal increasing the gain from say 20 (fully down) to 60 (fully up). In this case I would normally have the 'normal' gain at 20 too. If I wanted to alter the normal gain to 30 but still wanted to use the expression pedal, i would then have to go in and change the pedal to make it range from 30 - 60. So I'd have two changes to make for quite a subtle change. Its also a pain in the arse when the expression pedal gain adds volume overall, so you can then make the expression pedal make a slight decrease in overall volume, so it evens itself out as you increase the gain, but if you make a quick change to the overall volume, it then again means the pedal volume range needs to be altered. I dont know if I've explained that too well, but hopefully you get the idea. I suppose these are minor gripes rather than design flaws.
22. Just to give you all an update, I've had it fixed - still to pick it up but its £45 repair bill. They said it was the regulator that had gone. Doesnt mean alot to me, but aslong as its fixed! woop woop
23.
In what way is it too big - internal dimensions? Seems to me that it's smaller than the Gator bag that Mudpup et al are using happily, or is it just the mahoosive looking pouch on the front that makes it seem bulky? Just curious really - I think I'm leaning towards the smaller Gator 2110 at the mo'.
To be fair, its only perhaps a couple of inches too deep, and the front pocket as huge! Which isnt really a bad thing I suppose, but in an ideal world it would be a tiny bit smaller for the internal size, and the front pouch would be just the right size for a couple of leads. I'm being overly picky though, it seems decent quality, and the extra pouch size will no doubt come in handy at some point!
24.
I have one, and I can predict your future: you'll be thinking it would have been nice if it had been a bit smaller, but will be chuffed again when thinking about the price you paid for what's basically a nice bag. It's not me. It's the stars that guide me. best, bert
Bingo! I wish it was a touch smaller, but for the price I paid its quite a nice bag!
25. My first amp was a kickback style 12" thing. I think it was behringer! I actually really liked the tone of it, but at the time I was only really doing pub gigs with vocal PAs so DI was never really an option... hence I had to go get a bigger amp! I only ever used it behind me, and never sitting where the monitors would be, I dont think I'd like that actually - I think I'm too used to the bass flapping my trousers from the rear!
