I know my gripes pale into insignificance when measured against some of the events you guys have been through and had to endure. Better times in 25. xx

Are my band expectations simply too high?
chris_b replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
Unless you're Bob Dylan, playing in a band, to audiences, is always a compromise. Sometimes it's a 50% fit sometimes 90%. Do you want to play or sit around for the next 10 years waiting for perfection to drop in your lap (unlikely) or get out there and make a 50% band a 90% band. -
My parents and grandparents looked down their noses at the likes of Cream and The Jeff Beck Group (wasn't even music!!) because they didn't sound like Henry Hall, Billy Cotton and Geraldo. And around it goes.

I don't care how big the ego. I'll deal with anything that comes along, as long as their ability and talent balances the scales.

If you think there should be edginess you're in the wrong genre. The arrangement is where the tension is. It's complex, cleverly thought out, musically interesting and very well executed. They effortlessly hit every accent and push without a single ripple in the groove. This is fantastic musicianship.

I could list a thousand players. I've stolen from them all, but these guys are the top of my list: Bill Wyman Willie Dixon John McVie Duck Dunn Reggie McBride Hutch Hutchinson Nathan East

You've gotta laugh! I feel exasperation more than anything else. Oh, and I also had 2 gigs cancelled because both venues decided to redecorate!! I was definitely in 4 bands at the start of this year. I might be in another, but they've never asked me to join. I'm assuming I'm in because I get called for the few gigs the do. So I think I'm ending 2024 in 1 1/2 bands. I'm hoping my, "When one door closes, another opens", theory proves to be true in the New Year! May your 2025 be happy, healthy and prosperous. . . . and there's as much bass playing as you can handle. Cheers guys.

Will Basschat survive the Online Safety Act?
chris_b replied to fretmeister's topic in General Discussion
As long as they're protecting me from you nasty people, I'm OK with it. -
1 bandleader currently in IC with sepsis. Gigs cancelled. Earlier in the year 2 band leaders in hospital for surgery. Lots of gig cancelled. 1 band leader died. Lots of gigs cancelled. And just now, conflict between a band leader and the guitarist has killed off another band. Not a good year so far!

I reckon that's great bass playing. Busy but not getting in the way of the song. Inventive lines, typically modern gospel style. I can't think of anything negative to say about this guys bass playing.

I know a guy who fronted his own band for 20 years. I thought his voice was OK, but he took singing lessons about 10 years ago, and you can hear the difference every time he steps up to the microphone. His projection is stronger and he hits the notes with more accuracy. Those lessons are paying dividends every gig.

I never knew that!!! -
Get a Two10 and a One10 instead. Or maybe, 3 One10's.

I mostly visit BC (of course), but I've been on TB at least once a day since 2007. I only frequent the Basses, Amps and Technique sections, and I haven't come close to being hassled, shouted at or banned. I've had chats with bassists from around the world. It's always been a positive experience. I'm also an infrequent visitor to Ozbassforum.

Minimum Watts required for small to medium pubs
chris_b replied to LuizFurness's topic in Amps and Cabs
I know. I currently have more watts in my bass amp than my first 3 bands put together. But then you could easily have a conversation when the band was playing. Now ,in many cases, you can't. -
Wasn't there a GK MB150 in the classifieds recently? Here it is. . . .

The drummer of our school band tried to set up a 25th anniversary gig, but as he was the reason the band split up in the first place the guitarist told him to shove it. He tried again for a 30th anniversary gig and this time the guitarist was more amenable. After that we did a 35th anniversary gig. This year the drummer's band had a gig and our singer and me (last surviving members) got up and did a couple of the old songs in the interval. There are many bands I've played with over the years that I'd give a second time around, but this time I think that school band has run its course.

I bought a bass for less than £250. It is a good bass and gigs well, but my Sadowsky and Lull are better by miles.

Not going to happen. Two are dead, one went on to bigger things and wouldn't be interested, and the last one gave up music over 10 years ago.

Minimum Watts required for small to medium pubs

IMO the OP should be looking at something that can easily be upgraded. With a combo you have to replace the whole thing, so IMO the best option is a separate amp and cab. Then he can upgrade at will. -
That old problem of missing notes when playing
chris_b replied to FretsOnFire's topic in General Discussion
We did the first set without our drummer. He was stuck on the M25. IMO we sounded pretty good. He arrived just before the second set and only had time to set up the bass drum, snare , hi-hat and 1 cymbal. With fewer things to hit, it was the best gig he played during his time with the band. -

I rarely get FOH. My minimum band rig is a 500 watt amp and 2 x 112 cabs. It's loud enough to get a good clean sound in small or medium rooms (for larger rooms or louder bands I use a 700 watt amp) and light enough to carry without doing myself a mischief. I use Aguilar amps and Barefaced cabs. Keep an eye on the classifieds. There are some bargains around at the moment. -
I'll have a go at anything, but my preference is to be simple and effective.

Sadly, I can beat that! We had a gig in Basildon. A saturday afternoon slot at a festival. When I got there I couldn't find any sign of the event. I called the band leader and asked where they were. They said they were at the festival site waiting for me. I had gone to Blues At The Farm when I should have been at Blues On The Farm. . . . near freeking Chichester!!!!! I got there 2 1/2 hours late after a 90mph ride around the M25, M23 and I think the A27. My blood pressure and stress levels were through the roof.
