1.
Brillo..! (...and yes, apologies to Sarah for walking over her fine thread; such patience..!). I would humbly suggest that whatever is simplest/easiest/least costly for you would be a good start. A 'slimmed down' version would be great until wants/needs rear their [s]ugly[/s] costly head. Here's a modified 'rip' from this very site, adjusted... Introductions General Discussion Off Topic (of course..!) Site News Acoustic Drums and Kits Electronic Drums and Kits Cymbals Accessories Ethnic Miscellaneous Recording Gigs Drummers Wanted and Available Theory and Technique For Sale (..?) Wanted (..?) ...as starters..? Sounds familiar..? The only 'feature' which 'bugs' me here is the 'pop-up' of the OP's details; this has already been a subject of discussion, so I won't labour the point; suffice it to say that I have not once welcomed this event, and from a laptop, it's a PITB to shift the cursor away. 'Nuff said. I have been a regular on several drum fora; the biggest drawback to them, from my POV is that they are Yankee, for the most part, and there are many traits of similitude with T***Bass, in that 'flame wars' are common, or they are over-moderated beyond blandness. The 'style' here is the key to it's roaring success, and that would be the biggest feature that could be brought to any forum, I should think. Partly due to the contributors, of course (cries of 'Hear, hear' in the background...); the admin and [s]gods[/s] mods are not exempt from responsibility. Enough from me; here's a tuppence worth (nay; thruppence...) if it helps. Brillo..! Ok, where's the link then..? Do I need to register/login again..? Can we avoid publicity from Tama, please (No, that was a joke. Sorry, it just escaped me, won't happen again...) Come on, TIM, we're waiting on you (tapping his foot to a catchy 7/8 rhythm...) Oh, and almost forgot... Brillo..!
These sound like pretty good categories. Obviously you would want to split them up into General/OT, Gear, Technique, Classifieds etc like on here and I would also suggest in the gear section you add a forum for hardware, since people will want a place to talk about drum pedals, hi hat stands etc. If you need someone to moderate for the first couple of months I could do it until you find someone more competent Also speaking of being a pedant, "contributors" does not have an e in it
 2. good question. I think my tempo is usually ok on the drums but sometimes I get the timing a bit wrong when I count in and confuse everyone lol. I think the only reason I would use one at a gig is if we had to sync with computer/MIDI triggered aux parts or effects.
 3.
Funnily enough I was thinking about this the other day. If you guys would be prepared to form a core of friendly and welcoming people, a group who could set up a positive vibe and make the forum friendly for other members to use. we could definitely look into putting a basic forum together for you. Although it would depend on how much time Ben has.
Of course! You know me, friendly and welcoming is my middle name! seriously though sounds great. You've got at least 2 members already
 4.
According to the Ashdown advert in the latest copy of Bass Guitar Magazine their ABM range was developed using a "57 Jazz" This bass guitar they used was so retro it was made 3 years before the Jazz Bass was actually invented! How cool is that???? I'm off to play my 1948 Precision........
lol I quite like this guy's 1944 precision bass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCUpvTMis-Y&ob=av3e
 5.
I thought you said you tried an XLR-XLR cable and it was quiet so I guessed you already had one...?
No, he said the XLR to jack cable was too quiet.
XLR to TRSjack is balanced too
Certainly is. Hence BigRedX's question about it being a mono or stereo jack.
 6. You can trust the quality of HB cabs, I am not sure it will be that loud though.
 7. Looking pretty awesome. Shame about the contractors, I am not really so fussed about this whole jubilee thing either to be honest.
The place looks more and more impressive with every update, great to see somebody building a 'proper' studio in this age of bedroom chancery.
Don't diss bedroom chancery!
 8.
Yay..! I have a ton of lovely topics to start the ball rolling (Birch v Maple, which sticks are best for metal, how to maintain 260 bpm with my double pedal, Zildjian v Paiste, favourite stick twirl...). Just a teaser, there's loads more. Come on Mods, let's get this show on the road..!
+1. Quite. Let's get it going guys! Drummerworld is far too boring lol.
 9.
They're well nice to play aren't they! Shame I destroyed the truss rod nut on mine
They're not too bad really, I think I may have preferred my old millenium though tbh. Not sure about the truss rod nut, I would probably try seeing if i could turn it with some pliers and get it off there.
 10. Just to illustrate the extent of the problem, here he is playing not only a guitar line, but the percussion line as well! On the bass! I think it sounds pretty good actually, but I still think he should just get a guitar http://soundcloud.com/guynosaurus/hurt-johnny-cash-cover

 12.
Photography is not my strong point, but...
I have got that exact same peavey 5 string bass lol. Nice one.
 13.
It's easy if you have a decent laptop. Not expensive either. It's a lot easier and cost/time effective if you the sorts of constraints the OP has, and he wants to do sessions right?
Well ok it can be very cheap depending on your moral standards. You have to know what you're doing though. You've got to spend a lot of time tweaking things like guitar rig to get them to sound good.
 14.
I'd say it'd probably be better just to write the parts in the DAW you are hosting Superior in. For those who prefer to 'draw it in' then use the Piano Roll function. The ones in Cubase, Reaper or Logic Pro to name three are dead easy. Reaper is my favourite.. And you can also loop small sections as you write them in the DAW. I'm just not sure how it'd be easier to use an external guitar editor?
I personally find it is a lot easier to use an external editor since you don't have to type in the velocity of every different note, you're not having to slide the notes in with pinpoint precision in order for them to sit on the right timeslot and all that jazz.
 15. It's nice to be able to record your own parts at home if possible but having the capability of getting a decent sounding recording at home is not always possible for most people.
 16.
Musicians, try writing and orchestrating a song, spend time on it getting it right, reflecting your thoughts and personality, and see how much you feel like letting someone 'have fun' with it
+1 (although without the smiley).
 17.
I've never met a guitarist who can play bass. I've met too many who think they can. If the producer has advised him fair enough.
You've obviously not met many guitarists then...
 18.
Yes, you're right Steve, I should 'man-up' and make one! When using yours how do you run it to amplification? Do you jack-it straight into an amp/cab or combo? Or do you DI it into a PA? If the latter, do you go through a DI-box. Purely passive, or any pre-amping before the PA? Len
Quite honestly, if you're going to make something that simple you shouldn't overcomplicate things by worrying about this sort of thing! My advice would be try hooking it up to one of the line inputs on the PA, if it's not loud enough, use a preamp
 19.
Heyy, Long time so speak! Jubilee seems to be full of gigs! So it would be interesting to see who's playing this bank holiday weekend I'm playing on Monday with my new band, and I can't bloody wait! Thought I'd pop back in to say Hi, seeing as it's been a good while! Hope you're all good, Zoe x
Welcome back! This is a pleasant surprise, I was expecting another 'Should we play "God save the Queen" by The Sex Pistols at our Jubilee gig?' thread
 20. The best way to do it is to use a program like TuxGuitar to write a MIDI drum part, then export it as a MIDI file and import it into whatever DAW you're using to host Superior.
 21. I would but unfortunately I am not anywhere near pentaroundabout land so I can't.
 22.
The saga continues and the denouement is close to hand ... The ebay seller cancelled and made a full refund so I ordered what the man really really wanted in the first place. Mapex Meridian Maple jazz kit - http://www.drumshop....ce-drum-kit.htm And I thought double basses were money pits ...
gr8 kits. I remember the drummer out of Exit Ten went on tour with a pro-M kit which was the forerunner to the meridian series a few years back...
 23.
Have you actually heard what he played yet? It might be worth cooling the jets and taking on board how it all sounds as a final mix, which is the important thing. What might sound ok when it's just you and the guitarist might genuinely sound too busy when there are vocals, multi tracked guitars and all the rest of the padding are added in. I'd hold fire until I had time to see if I felt they were right. By your own account, songs were changed and you didn't nail some parts. If the guy has invested a lot of his own money and he's got a producer telling him this should change and that should change and you weren't available, you might have done the same thing in his situation. Like it or not, Metal is all about all about being tight and powerful. Sometimes non-standard basslines don't work in that context. If they've changed your parts, it doesn't sound like they've done it to spite you, it sounds like time was tight and the guitarist and producer had a vision they were working towards. The whole project sounds a little underprepared going into the studio. If you hadn't heard the vocals and your experience of the music was flling space with your bass in instrumental songs, then it sounds to me like there'd be a pretty good chance than things might get in the way of each other. If it really wasn't working, would you insist the song suffers so you get to keep a more interesting bassline? I've produced demos for bands and had situations where guys were underprepared, didn't know the songs, didn't know their parts and some just couldn't play. I've never had a problem suggesting that someone else plays the right part to the requisite standard. If people are investing money into a recording then the final product needs to be as good as it can be to the end listener. Bear in mind, Pete Townshend didn't do much playing on Can't Explain. It happens. As I said, listen to the finished product and see how it sounds. It really is all about the song as a whole, not the bass, not the guitar, the song. If you still feel the music is lacking then maybe it's not the right situation for you. If it sounds right when you hear the final mix, maybe you can take it on the chin and learn from the situation.
+1. Not just Pete Townsend, either. Ringo had his parts on the original album re-recorded by a session drummer because his kick drum parts were not deemed "tight" enough. I appreciate that it is a real bummer when you have to re-record parts you have spent a lot of time on (I've been there) but you have to understand that if these lot are a professional outfit, they are going to need to sound perfect, which is more important than any one person's ego. If you look at the songs I am making for example, at the moment, like your drummer, I'm using S2.0. It means that my parts aren't on any of the recordings as such, but because of my shortcomings as a drummer, I know it will sound a lot better for metal music than anything I could record at this stage.
 24.
Fair enough, I think this kind of music and/or bass playing (take your pick) is very easy to dislike but the point has been pretty well laboured now, like Jaco, hate Jaco etc. The facts are that the guy was an extraordinary musician, arranger and bass player. I think often we can try too hard to dislike music that isn't to our tastes but in reality there's always something to be gained even from the music that we can't stand... even more in this case as we're all bass players. Not every one of Jaco's live performances is necessarily to my tastes, but then neither were Jimi Hendrix's - and yet he had a profound impact on the future of his instrument and indeed the future of a lot of music. Just take music at face value and enjoying it becomes a lot easier.
Good point. I must say I wouldn't normally choose to listen to something like Weather Report but you have to respect the guy for what he did for fretless bass playing.
 25.
Yep. Undeniably great player but that was just plain bad. Almost comparable to... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MI-_jWAmlE
I don't often claim to be able to do a better job than someone on guitar, but I will make an exception here.
