Yesterday, drove all the way to Bristol in hammering rain. Gig was in a cocktail bar specialising in blues/jazz and soul. With our friends and family we outnumbered the clients, and for most of our second set we were effectively playing to an empty house 😞 Staff were really apologetic - blamed the rain and the jubbly, as people had started off getting hammered on Wednesday night and were partied out by Sunday... Still, we sold a t-shirt, the few people who were in thought we were great and the staff were full of praise. Back for the next two sundays, so hopefully it will perk up! Tiny area to set up, so next week smaller PA and just one-carry bass, amp and cab setup for me! Still we got a good photo...

Played the local jubilee/festival in Llandevaud yesterday. About 100-150 people but mostly off around the hog roast/stalls. Playing on the back of a lorry. Went well although my lead developed an intermittent fault and I had to switch to a more reliable(!) wireless at half time. During second set the stalls upped sticks at 5:30 so numbers dropped away. As we were packing up the next band were setting up on the adjacent lorry to do three sets 7 to 10, looked like they might have got about 20 people left ☹️

Sounds like the idiot missed the first set...

Unpopular Musical Opinions: What are Yours?

They had seven hits in the UK, five in the top ten, the best reaching number 2. Two of them wrote a song that finished 16th in Eurovision 2000. Just sayin' -

As in Leiderhosen, literally "unfortunate leg-wear". -

It seems there's not a thread anywhere where we can post a simple notification of what gigs we have coming up, so other basschatters can come along and say hello/throw rotten fruit/avoid like the plague. To kick things off, Bluesfire (you can guess what we play - blues rock power trio stuff) are: Saturday 4 June, 4pm - Queens Platinum Jubilee Fun Day, Llandevaud. https://allevents.in/newport/queens-platinum-jubilee-fun-day-llandevaud/200022571138803 Sunday 5 June, 8pm (and 12 and 19) - Bootleggers, Chepstow Road, Bristol. https://www.facebook.com/events/337979661810457 If you are in the area, come along and say hello 🙂

Is there a performance forum? I was thinking about one rolling thread rather than a thread per gig. Will start something, mods can kill it if it's no good...

Have I missed a thread about upcoming gigs? It would be great to see what gigs basschatters are playing near me (and be able to publicise my own gigs in the hopes someone turns up!) Surely there is such a topic, but if there is I haven't noticed it.

I knew a woman whose partner made a living as a Gary Glitter tribute... that career went west. -

But the bass tone on that open air concert is to die for. It was actually Klaus Voorman - the best bass player in the Beatles (if you want another unpopular opinion). -

Probably more than Durham Durban and Argh Hargh recorded in total... -
I've been with Alex our guitarist before, and also plan on coming over with my brother sometime. It's a busy weekend, but I might get over myself (I know comment was meant for @Gottastopbuyinggear)

There's also this of course: But I don't think there's actually a bad version out there... -
What's the best free, simple online shared calendar for gig planning? Ideally, something that works on a PC and on an android app and that I can copy and past or drag items from it into Outlook and vice versa? Life is getting complicated!

I got a bit distressed on Sunday when my partner couldn't understand why this is a perfect pop song... Strange, as we have most of our musical taste in common. -
Well it did the job very well and with the inexpensive amazon padded strap was uber comfortable with no neck dive. Only issue, my cheap wireless set slightly attenuated the low c and b, still there but not wall shaking. Earned me some cred points too 😎

Seem to be getting some traction. I will see if it might work for the Earl Haig. Otherwise I have a venue in Penarth that would be willing, we could use their big upstairs room on a day when there's a really good band downstairs.

Maybe he just enjoyed the music and didn't expectvhis own mathematical precision firm others. Indeed he may have appreciated the differences as z good thing. -
Well done! I've done the odd fretless rehearsal but never had the guts to try a whole gig on one.

Awesome gig last night. 8:45 about 4 people in. But they came, and it was loopy. Loads of improv and I even played a few solos! Pure fun from start to finish for us and the audience. That's what it's all about. 😎

How does intonation work on basses with fixed bridges?
Stub Mandrel replied to Oomo's topic in Bass Guitars
I can't understand why the open string needs to be out, surely a tweak to the nut-first fret distance isn't enough to cause an issue. I never came across an instrument where bad intonation near the nut couldn't be addressed by cutting the nut lower.
