  1. It's just one big money grab, and I'm surprised there aren't more complaints about eBay these days. A recent change seems to be auction + 'make an offer' which is confusing. Seems to be more full of dealers and new stuff and fewer straight auctions from private sellers. I imagine FB, Gumtree, even Preloved are eating away at eBay's dominance. I like the dialogue you can have through any of those and of course no fees. EBay block phone numbers (for example) in messages. There's a get-round - just spell a few of the numbers, works a treat.
  2. There are good tales around that, whether true or not. Apparently they were mid-tour and he just went out one day and got pliers and epoxy and did it. I suspect there's a bit more to it than that, maybe. Re flats, I am actually som knocked out with the EB Cobalts on my P that I may well put them on my Jazz as well some time. My idea was keep rounds on the Jazz (D'Addario 45-100s) but the cobalts are bright enough, don't get the full 'ring' of rounds, but you lose the pronounced slide noise, and I do slide up n down quite a bit. The EBs were recommended to me by a few here, and for anyone who still thinks flats are all low-end thump, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Not cheap but really good.
  3. Well, wipe your muddy paws @ped Get what you're saying but I'll be OK with it I think, so long as it's reasonably stable. Should be able to fold it and take it places as I often have one fretted and the fretless on the go.May end up getting a neck-grab type also. This one will be way better than what I have at the mo. though. Thanks for the tip, I don't mean tip like falls over...
  4. No Bass day.
Got everything now. Stopped looking at basses and gear. OK - need a tuner having retired the TC with built-in (for an Aguilar, so no pain). Don't even need strings - totally happy with string choice and even have a new set of the rounds to replace when they go off. And a Hercules stand for the Jazz. That's about it.
How's it feel? Great, really good. Not like I'm skimping with 3 fine basses, 2 or 3 rigs including the newly acquired GB combo. No excuses, just play. Get better, Attack the stuff I'm wary of, confront the weaknesses. There is nothing on Earth so fine as a great bass through a great rig on a good day.

"because a Chapman Stick is not just for Christmas" That's right -  it's for dry lips in winter.

Nice Warwick @prowla. If I was going to be led astray a Warwick 5 could do it. Funny, some here hate Warwicks, don't know why views are so polarised. Mind you, some like weird custom basses with lights on. I don't, there you go.

I've got four Warwick 5-stringers; two are just right for me, one has a fatter neck profile which isn't quite me, and one an RB I'm building from parts. I previously had another RB and I couldn't get on with it at all.

I have to say that I like the idea of not having a body to go with the neck bridge and machine heads.  Saves the ears from a lot of incoming and unnecessary opinion on your choice of body style over theirs.

Other than that, I have no desire for a Chapman Stick even on a bitter Winter's day.  It's more of a technical appreciation with me.

  5. This looks ideal for me, I want something compact. The cradle arms moving so it takes the offset is exactly the thing I need. I'll order one. Thanks all 👍 p.s. done already - one-click Amazon £21. Really easy spending dosh with one-click innit
  6. Seems most stands are made for guitars with basses an afterthought - some don't like the long necks and feel close to falling over. Then there's the offset body issue. Any recommends please - specifically for my Jazz?
  7. Sorted @Shaggy
  8. Here's 2 sets for starters, maybe more when I have a clear-up. All 34" 4 string. 1] GONE. Fender flats - I think 45-105. Quite high tension but I reckon that's the gauge I got. Fitted to a Precision (not through body) so 4 one side. Silks are a bit fluffy but strings almost new. 2] PROB GONE already. D'Addario half-rounds 45-100s. 2 + 2 (off my Mayo fretless). Hardly used. Still available: 3]GONE: La Bella rounds - 45 100 (maybe 105). Off Precision thru-body (so will fit bridge mount too). Again, nearly new. Madness it is I'll check what else I have in the strings out-box. PM address and I will ship UK. Optional donations to NSPCC if concience dictates.
  9. If the bass you want them for is a 2+2 34", don't buy new ones!! pm me and i'll send mine over. D'Addario 45-100 I recall. Spent a few days on so good as...
  10. I do think flats have come on miles in the past 10 years or so - I recently asked for advice here about 'bright' flats and was recommended EB Cobalts or D'Addario chromes. I got a set of the EBs - amazing, the full-fat flat sound but with more than enough top - Ok not the ringy top of new rounds, but a crisp controllable crunch on the top... tasty. I'd used a set of Fenders recently and whilst many here like them, to me they are the old-school flats, not only devoid of top but no high-mids either. Depends what you want but sounds to me you would like the EBs (or Chromes maybe) a lot.
  11. Tried half-rounds a bit ago, kind of looking for best of both. I reckon half-rounds are a miss all over - don't get the low-end punch of flats or the ring of rounds, least I couldn't. If you want half of both try some half rounds
  12. If one had come up close by and for sensible money I'd probably have got one. According to the Americans, the Workingmans is preferred to the later (current?) Working Pro. Look how compact it is! MY GB is considerably bigger, but I can lift it into my pick-up... it's basically a bag of cement so a fair lift but OK. Anyway, that's me done on amps for a while. Nice EB3 (maybe they call them something else now), I owned a Gibson variant years ago but used to fight it for sound - bags of character and very cool looking.
  13. I came very close to getting a 900 a few months ago... it may even still be here. I mean, what would I do with 900W. Like giving Butthead a chainsaw Anyway, got it back. All pretty clean. QC dated Sept 2005. Had the head out and grill off. Bass drivers both excellent, smooth and clean. Amp a bit dusty inside so cleaned fan and vac-ed dust out. Had 2 crackly pots so that's mainly why the head came out - lubed the pots, seems OK now. Early days - its flat sound is really good. Harder then my Aguilar through a TC 212, probably to be expected but just generally a more forward 'present' sound. Partly that's the 10s at work. But then a really rich depth if you lift the bass or select the low boost - one of 3 pre-sets: low, mid scoop, 'signal attack' which seems to boost high mids and lower top plus adds drive... that's how it sounds anyway. Excellent sound straight off with the P + EB flats; good with the Jazz + rounds but more exploring to do. Not quite there with fretless + La Bella white nylons - just need to play more with the mids I think. Missing (if it really matters): no mute on front; DI is pre only (no big deal I think). I'll get used to no mute but would have been handy. Good bits: 2 x 10 and horn. Can switch fan off at low levels - good for a 'pro' combo. The usual tuner out, effects in/out. Don't get the dual output - can switch from 2 x 100W to a bridged 200 (into 8 ohm) but not clear why. 2 x big handles and generally built like a brick. Has a tilt foot to angle back. Got a nice big Genz Benz logo on the front - call me shallow. Ordered a jack to speakon to add a second cab, just to see how it sounds. But overall very pleased. Like the Aguilar, I've found everything flat is very close to the sound, and mainly adjusting the mids a little is all I need. If anyone has one of these M heads or combos and better understands the point of dual output, I'd like to know.
  14. me too - EB Cobalts on the P, D'Addario rounds on the Jazz. I could see a day I'd put cobalts on the Jazz too, but the P + flats is a perfect fit I reckon.
  15. Update - was offered the SWR in Yorkshire for 280 (may have got it down to 250 even) but too far away. Also all I can find on the SWRs (in the U.S. mainly) seemed to say the 10 was a better sound and the 12 might be a bit muddy (might not of course). Anyway, found this - it's slightly over brief being a 210, so 24" x 20" x 15", and about 28Kg. Had a liking and respect for the GB gear for ages so it was hard to resist. Again nothing I could find in the UK but a real fan-base in the States. Collect Monday if all goes to plan - will give it a blow and let you know
  16. sorry, didn't mean to sound casual about a grand, but I almost always find nice used gear and I'm sure I've seen the odd Subway around £600-ish? OK, not too frequent but they do come up.
  17. Just wondering if you considered adding the Mesa Subway to your list? I'm a recent and happy Tonehammer convert but I did quite fancy the Mesa.
  18. Hi, you'll find lots of experience and help here. Beware the for sale lists, compared to the usual hunting grounds the lists of gear here are quite jaw-dropping. Enjoy👍
  19. me too @EliasMooseblaster. So when you say 'again' this happens often does it? I mean tattoos specifically. I've had some weird stinky poo offered my way on trades, but not a tattoo yet. BTW, I do think mentioning the word trades in an ad invites the really extreme chancers.
  20. Just had another joker. Selling a BH250 on FB at 120 and happened to take pics with it standing on the RS212 so cab top is just visible. So this guy has just askedif i'll take £100 for the amp and cab . And the ad says that's the price no offers. Chancers and flakes, gypsies n thieves - I've had em all.
  21. @Paddy515 - without knowing how many basses you run, I plan to keep rounds on my Jazz, the flats on the P - but having rounds on one seems handy to me. I might change my ideas on that after some time with these EB Cobalts but I do particularly liike rounds ( + pick) for some things. Reminds me to go through my stash of unloved / preloved strings and offer them up - blown a packet on strings over the past few months !! btw, I really wish more makers would publish tension figures - D'Addario are the only ones to my knowledge and it is basic useful info.
  22. Arrived 1 day from Strings Direct. A reminder these are the 45-100s. Checked on here (old threads) and decided to string through body. These cobalts feel very compliant, flex happily, and generally it seems many here string flats through with no probs. Bit OCD but tidy how the silk wraps all start just past the nut and almost in line... tidy that (see pic). First very quick impressions - the tension is about what I was looking for, more than equivalent rounds but not loads more and I wanted the tighter feel and sound on these (compared to my usual D'addario 45-100 rounds). Boy are these bright - very crunchy/cracky on top - turned the cab HF down, cut treble on head a tads. Very slight lift on lowish mids, bass flat (all on a Tone Hammer 350 through TC 212). Tight firm bass, plenty of top to play with but it's easy to control and will mellow off with use for sure anyway. They felt a tiny bit sticky, I mean not super-slippy not actually gluey. I think that's a newness, these need playing in. Dead pleased with these, they suit the P really well and will probably last way longer than I keep rounds on (typically 2 - 3 months, depends). In summary I'd say if you want to venture into flats but not go all out dead n thumpy, want to retain some (quite a lot) of the crunchy top of rounds - this is a very good place to start indeed. Bottom and low mids way more solid, top very forward but never as ringy as rounds of course. Thanks all above for guidance - at £45 a set it's nice to get it right first shot👍
  23. This is like voting for a EuroMP. None of them. Where's the box for that then ?
  24. Re the time wasters, I'm afraid it's just a part of selling. Reminds me it's a LOT easier to add to the basses and gear than it is to deplete. I do find FB the best of them at the moment though - I've had fast easy results several times recently - just so long as you are pricing sensibly. Also I am certain that decent pics and a detailed description help. I've been on the lookout for a second cab recently and hardly anyone bothers to put dimensions or approx weight. Usually you can go look it up but it's basic stuff. Generally I reckon a bit of effort on the part of seller makes for a better price quicker.
  25. Amazing attention to detail, particularly under the skin. Check this out, Limelight 👍
