1. Myth has it that Jaco was out cold on a park bench and it was stolen by an opportunist while he slept off the booze/drugs/whatever. Here's Jaco with Kevin Kaufman in 1986 and the fully restored bass. Apparently, 150 hours' work went into putting it back together after being received in this state...
2.
Hey if Rob keeps turning these out by the dozen my #006 might eventually attain some 'vintage' value. Wonder who's got #001?
Rob & Dawn usually keep all the original prototypes (#001 of each model) in their personal collection, as well as old instruments from known endorsees that come back to them
3. I was also thinking it could be from another of the Gibson group, like Kramer.
4. It looks like a more highly spec'd Epiphone Embassy V to me. Here's a better picture...
5. Look at it this way - It's got to be better than gambling, drinking, taking drugs, or... WOMEN! So welcome to a comparatively clean addiction
6. I concur with Alan - £300 is about the max for a Mex Precision with hsc. Welcome to the forum, btw
7. Who ya callin' a 'dawg'?! Welcome to the forum!
8. This is how it sounded when it first resurfaced early last year...
9.
Shameless punt - this ones in the "for sales"...
And thanks to the BassBod, this one is now mine I think it's found it's home now - I picked this up a couple of weeks ago in a very reasonable trade for all parties concerned. It had the fretted neck on to start with which just didn't feel right for the bass, so while I was there, we changed it for the fretless neck which is a work of art. Others who have owned/played this bass have commented that the fretless neck is too skinny, but I think it's just right. This bass was originally fitted with the fretless neck, so it's understandable that it works so well as a fretless. In the last two weeks the neck has been off again & I've added the original plastic shim which has sorted out the angle issues. A few setups later and it's a seriously nice bass. I gigged it the other weekend & it sounds amazing. Soloing the back pickup with active treble centred & you'd swear Jaco's bass of doom was in the room! The workmanship is sublime (even for a hurriedly thrown together parts bass) and the sound is what a "super jazz" should be - It sounds like a Jazz with that little bit extra punch, as opposed to something that looks like a Jazz & sounds like a modern twin soapbar hifi bass. Onto the pics... Now I have the spare fretted neck, I'm thinking of getting Mike to build me another Funkmeister body to the same specs as this one at some point...
10. Told you they were good, didn't I?
11.
Being the terminology-snob I am, I saw the thread title and thought, "I don't play eighth notes... I play quavers!" Anyway, I use index or middle equally. Depends on what's been leading up to it. Or, more often than not, raking down to it.
Terminology snob? Me too, although I prefer to call it anally-retentive in my case! (A throwback from a Canadian g/f many years ago!)
As the awkward bugger I am, I'll have to say that I hit the lead note with my little finger and work back to my index finger. although I might be the only 4-finger plucker I know. Spent ages teaching myself to do it due to being mistaken while watching Steve Harris... he only uses 3 you know... I didn't Handy for speed though.
Now that's an impressive sounding technique, Dave. One step further on from classical guitar!
12. Thanks Andy - This is the second one of these BS models that has passed through here & if I was a rock player I'd keep it. It out-Precisions Precisions! Lovely made basses, these
13. The best strings I've found for wooden necked basses are the DR FatBeams 40-100 sets. They have massive tone and feel light and flexible at the same time. The best overall solution to playability/flexibility/speed are graphite necks (very rigid) with light gauge strings. I use 30-90 or 30-115 on my Status basses. Nothing more bendable anywhere in my experience.
14. Wow! Five Streamlines in our midst so far. They're getting popular
15. Just taken this in as a P/X this morning - Very nice barely used Yamaha BB714BS Billy Sheehan signature bass in black. P pickup in the hot spot & sub-woofer neck pickup - Seperate tone control with push-pull function for serious sub-harmonic action that will vapourise women's underwear at 100 yards. (Honest, Mr.Trades Descriptions ) Comes complete with YAMAHA BS signature gig bag and DVD?! I've just put on a set of new EB Slinkys & the sound of this thing is huge - I'll give you an example of the output... In order to get an almost peaked signal on the LG1000, a Jazz bass will need almost full input volume. This bass only needs fifty percent! Huge and rich sounding, this is going to make someone a phenomenal bass! Excellent overall condition, with only one dink on the top of the headstock (visible in picture.) Priced at £350 or nearest offer - Feel free to hit me with any trade offers - Most things considered! Rich - 07545 471037
16. I'd part with a significant number of basses for that VW Monarch!
17. Okay, here she is, putting in a brief appearance... Miss.Myrtle
18.
that was my thought, listened to a load of stuff and came away thinking thats one of the best bass sounds for jazz i've heard. In the Quo track its recognisably status but im less impressed, the growl is good for the music but im not as keen on how the rest works, the preciseness and cleanness sounds odd alongside the guitars warmth... hmmm
Hmmm It all depends on where you want your bass sound to sit. If you're happy for your warm bass sound to be buried alive under a pile of guitard-noise, then a Fender Jazz is just the ticket, but if you want your sound to cut through like a scythe, then get a Status. The sound works very well for all situations, really. The basses are highly adaptable, too.
19. Here's a good example... At around 29secs & 3min 10secs, John Edwards is playing the "Rhino Bass" alone with Jeff Rich on drums. That's the Status sound...
20.
aw thanks for that bassbus and OTPJ, I actually went looking on youtube to see if you had made any videos like your one for your red jazz and couldn't find anything. Usefull as however brilliant they are i now know that that tone isn't quite for me, however in other types of music they would be perfect.
*Nods* Yes, that's the extreme end of the sound, with the bass and treble fully boosted - Obviously the Streamline is possibly the most clinical Status sound, due to the lack of wood in the mix. The S2's are a little more hifi but a touch softer in sound. My 5-string bolt on with the phenowood board is a different mix again - The Status sound is there, but it's a lot softer and woodier. Makes for a great jazz bass. Played up near the end of the fingerboard with a soft touch, you'd swear it was a double bass at a distance.
21. As I said, sorry if I sound too critical - It's the music teacher in me coming out
22. I like your Maple Leaf Angel, Graham Nice to hear how tight the phelonic makes the fretless sound. Here's a little video of the Streamline plugged directly into the computer mic socket - No amplifier. Some of it is a little distorted, but there's a bit of both styles here. I did this one to demonstrate the Streamline sound... You'll hear the trademark Status "growl" and also the sort of 3d "shimmer" you get off the strings - Basically the graphite picks up literally everything. That's the Status sound.
23. Just had a listen to all the previews of the tracks - Some interesting and varied material there & very good for a first attempt. I'm confused on one point, though - Was the "tune" in track one meant to totally clash with everything else? The harmony, chord progressions & bass line just didn't go together for me. Is this intentional, or am I just old fashioned? Also, make sure your instruments are exactly in tune before you record - Some of the acoustic guitar and bass intonation is eeeew! Hope I'm not sounding too critical - It is good to see you getting your music out there & on iTunes as well! Well done
