1. The electric bass was designed by Leo Fender and introduced in 1951 as the first Precision bass. Leo designed it to be a more portable alternative to the double bass with accurate intonation from the fretted neck. It was loosely based on the Telecaster guitar design. Interestingly, if you look at all of the 50's literature and advertising, there's no mention of the word "guitar" at all. So therefore, the electric bass is descended from the double bass. It just happens to be shaped like an elongated guitar for convenience. Perhaps we should all call our instruments, "Fender Basses" like Leo did?
 2. Just driven to Tom's to deliver a bass he bought from me - Excellent guy to deal with & a gentleman to boot! Highly recommended
 3. I played this bass at Tom's house today & I can confirm it's a great sounding bass in excellent condition. Buy from Tom with confidence, people
 4. They all have the graphite growl, Rich - The S2's are more hifi-sounding, that's all. There's more of a woody overtone from the ones with the tone block. The biggest difference is the newer Board 302 preamp. Much more hifi sounding than the older two bands. I'd assmue yours will have a lot of graphite "string shimmer" resonance like a Streamline/Stealth with the graphite shell. Should be a very interesting sounding bass. Can't wait to hear the sound clips! It always makes me smile how they all have very individual characters to the sound as well - My original Streamline which Mart now has was a very dark sounding bass, whereas the newer one I now have has a little more top end to it, but still the darker two band 3d sound. D4Dve & I compared Miss.Myrtle to his slightly older Maple topped identical through neck S2 5-string. The maple topped bass was a little brighter, but the fundamental tone was much thicker on the myrtlewood bass. My 4-string S2 with the walnut top is the ultimate hifi bass with a seriously funky, snappy sound, combined with massive tone & the bolt on S2 5-string with the phenowood fingerboard is a lot softer sounding when played gently, but still has the snappy howl when you dig in, the same as all the others. Great for jazz work.
 5.
Hi, can I know the weight of the bass and the nut width please?
Weight is 8.5lbs & the nut width is 40mm on both necks.
 6.
Look peeps, at the end of the day, I know the bass shape might not be to everyone's taste, as I've repeatedly said, I myself find it a little odd, however there are a couple of things that crash the "culture shock" impression, one is the impressive ergonomics: i.e. it wears well and plays comfortably, and two no matter what anyone can say about the looks it more than makes up for it with the array of sounds you can get out of just one bass. And finally: all comments are appreciated both positive and negative ones, however there is that element of respect that some of you tends forget when describing someoene else's instruments. Let me explain: personally I am not fond of Warwicks, Status, headless of any kind, composite bass necks in general, yet I wouldn't offend an owner of any of these basses by saying your bass is FUGLY, is like someone saying, Jesus mate your wife looks well rough! You just don't do that. That is the part I don't like about this forum: people always go that extra length to be out and out rude. Have some common sense and respect and if you see something you don't particularly like, just say "not my cuppa" or not for me, and keep your nasty comments to yourselves.
Well said that man!
 7.
It says on my order confirmation: Facing wood: Alder with Graphite Shell Back wood: N/A Tone block: N/A Veneer: N/A Finish: Natural High Gloss Polyester I'm not sure if that means it's all-in-one construction or not? Rob said it'll be Graphite finish front and back fading to black around the edges.
If it's a through neck instrument, it'll probably be made like a KingBass - The through-neck being inlaid into the alder body, then the graphite shell over the top of the alder. Sounds like it'll be a nice instrument, however he makes it!
 8.
i want to get it sold BEFORE THIS FRIDAY because with the money, i will be buying a ken smith burner 5 for myself and then sending my Ibanez BTB 5 string to church to be the main bass there instead.
Is this scheme of yours not a tad dishonest for a churchgoer?
 9. Not sure on this particular info, but the last two I've seen come into the local dealer have had the most glorious flamed maple on the necks. They're just getting better. Buy one before the powers that be at Corona put a stop this madness!
 10.
I do quite like the look of these but I reckon I'd only ever use the neck pickup, and I think I'd have to get one with less contrast between the pickguard and body, but I do like the design overall. Yeah but "futuristic" was a '50s look wasn't it. Brief resurgence in the '80s while ET was in cinemas and Status basses were cool, then back to ironic T-shirts where it belongs.
'Ere laddy, when I was at school, we used to tuck our shirts in and look smart. That was cool - If you happened to be in the nerd brigade like me! Anyway, if Doctor Who can make bow ties cool... Nah, scratch that idea!
 11.
I cannot believe that I was thinking of offloading this..... stupid stupid man...... Your'e absolutely correct about the necks.... things is Rich I really only play 5ers these days and I've just realised that I'm going to have to outlay vast amounts of cash over the next few months to have a 5 string version of the Black Beauty built for me..... Sucks huh
Ah well, Jay - At least the payoff will be that you'll end up with the bass you really want - And you'll have the matching four string as well. How cool is that?!
 12. Thanks for the detailed reply, GW Yes, I liked certain aspects of the Stingrays I had. The piezo equipped natural 4-string was a very nice bass, but it had no place in the stuff I actually play for a living. A Status S2 or a double bass/EUB all do the job so much better. I much preferred the sound of the 5-string Ray with the ceramic pickups - Much brighter and punchier, but really didn't like the rough unfinished necks at all. It actually annoyed me that they could produce such a nice bass without bothering to finish it, LOL! I think if I don't end up trying a Nordstrand 5, the Big Al 5 may be the "wooden 5-string" I end up going for. It sounds as if it has the aggressive (but tameable) range of sounds I'm looking for and it looks very distinctive, too. Consider it on my list - Especially since seeing your CAR one. Congrats again, mate!
 13.
Hey, dont get me wrong, if it floats your boat thats great, it clearly has a bazillion tones to choose from, and will no doubt be a fine bass, I just hate the look. I'm willing to accept the fault here may well be mine
Someone call the taste police! You're missing out on a seriously cool looking bass here, mate. Last time I looked, it was 2010, not 1951...
 14. You can only buy the Sadowsky outboard preamp/DI pedal direct from Sadowsky as far as I know. That's where I got mine from, anyway. As for the two basses, I haven't heard the Farida, but Andy Travis on here has had a few in stock and really seems to rate them. The Squier Classic Vibe Jazz is also a seriously good Jazz bass, in fact much better sound/playability/construction quality than the current Standard series MIM Fender. There, I said it
 15. I had a feeling these were going to be seriously good, especially after watching the Ed Friedland video on the 'Al a couple of months ago. Seriously cool looking, too. I seem to remember asking you a while ago GW (but don't remember the response - Duh!), but how does 'Al 5 compare with your 25th Anniversary/Reflex? They obviously have the same mad bad and dangerous preamp, so I wondered if they were particularly different in terms of playing/sound?
 16. I had a feeling that was in the offing, Jay. And there was me thinking of offering to trade Miss.Myrtle for your BB... ONLY JOKING! Do you find the same as I do, that although the Status 5-string necks are about the fastest of their type on the planet, the sheer narrowness of the 4-string neck makes it utterly effortless and faster than you yourself could possibly ever play?
 17.
How funky is your Jazz Bass?
Mine's actually currently for sale, but it's called a "Funkmeister." I suppose you could say it's in the name, really...
 18. Thanks for all the kind words, guys - Let's hope I can pull off a couple of sales before the S2000 gets bought by someone else!
That JC is a good'un I'm interested in how you rate it's set up as I did it and would like to think I know what I'm doing, feel free to shoot me down
No need to shoot you down, mate It was fine for the strings that were on it at the time. Now I've lessened the string gauges to 43-100 flats it just needed a slight tighten on the trussrod and a little lowering. Just adjustments to personal taste, really.
Nice basses - and pics! Were you using a 50mm prime lens, by any chance?
I don't know - It's just the standard one that comes on the Mrs' Canon D400.
I really want this! Please still be here when I get paid Is the fretted neck Ebony too?
The fretted neck is a little thicker (fingers to thumb) and has a rosewood fingerboard, I believe. Nice neck, anyway.
Hi Rich. are you after That ('87) '2000 that we've both seen? same as my one, but less road worn? I want it as well, but cant explain to Mrs W why!! ATB & I hope you get it! (if I'm right) W read your orginal post properly! you're getting that bass, 'aint cha?
Only if I can sell these two fine specimens - If it wasn't for the S2000 cropping up, I'd be keeping these. The Funkmeister in particular is seriously good and sounds fantastic.
 19. This bass is now **SOLD**, subject to the usual... Many thanks for all the insterest, guys. **UPDATE** The Funkmeister fretless super-Jazz is now under offer from a potential new owner, so I've done some new and better pics of the Epiphone Jack Casady. I gigged this bass yesterday & I'm not really sure I should sell it. It's that nice! Once again, the price is £425 ono including official Epiphone hard case. Call me on 07545 471037 if you need any further details. Rich. The Epiphone Jack Casady is actually a faithful reproduction of a little known Gibson bass produced between 1972 & 1979, the Gibson Les Paul Signature Bass. This bass comes complete with brand new Thomastik Jazz 43-100 flats and sounds fantastic. Sound-wise, if you use rounds this bass sounds like a more hifi Precision - The single pickup is really good. On flats, you can get a seriously double bassy sound. The 50/250/500k impedance switch gives some interesting options, too. Very smooth and vintage on 50, nice and balanced/punchy on 250 and seriously nasty and mids-overload on 500k. There's some very slight swirl scratches on the back, but as you know, polished mahogany scratches if you so much as look at it! - Overall condition is excellent and it otherwise looks like a brand new bass. Comes complete with official Epiphone case. £425 ono. I'm not looking for trades on this, as I'm really wanting to buy the mint Status S2000 on the for sale board. Help me out here...
 20. Thanks, Bubinga5! I like both, to be honest. The 50th is an excellent bass made very special just via the nitro finish (sounds amazing) and the spec of the parts. For if you didn't know, the 50th has the neck profile from the 62RI American Vintage bass (with added posiflex rods), the pickups from the US 75RI (very creamy, if a little lively) & 70's pickup spacing. The American Standard is a great bass in it's current version, but yes, the 50th is the better bass at the end of the day. Is it worth a load of extra money? Well, only you can answer that one. As for my opinion, your Corvette $$ is a better all round bass than any passive Jazz could ever be.
 21. I've also become a big fan of 12" speakers. They seem to have a much better defined sound than previous 15's & 10's. I can't recommend my Genz Benz 12's highly enough. The others I loved the sound of were Higgie's Aguilar 12's. Serious cabinets, those. Hey Chris, did you end up P-Retro-ing the '64? Rich.
