1. Nice topic, I'm sure really useful for a lot of people. Everyone should read this, the headstock advice is really handy. With the frequencies we play within, dead spots can be a real problem. Low end resonates to a much larger degree than high end does, it's such a pain if you play a nice big 'A', but then the 'Ab' one step down doesn't have any body, or doesn't sustain. It's really noticeable. I've heard (but never tried), that tapered strings can offer a step in the right direction if you are having resonance problems too. Worth adding my $0.2 !
2. **ON HOLD PENDING THE USUAL **
3. PM's responded to. Bump.
4. Hi Chris, Sad to see my old one going up for sale, but you're obviously in love with Celinders (as we all are having owned them) which is testament to this bass. This bass is fantastic, no dead spots and a solid resonance throughout its range. It's true, a lot of other brands have a great rep around here, but I'm sure if anyone tried this and put it up against anything they would be re-writing the rule book. Best of luck with the sale, and if you're passing, then do stop in for a cuppa. Bump for a world class instrument.
5. Hi folks, thanks for the PM's. Still for sale. After many requests, pictures have gone on my website as I can't put them on here. Link to pics: http://www.jophillpotts.com/www.jophillpotts.com/For_Sale...html Thanks.
6. It was 6 weeks in a theatre pit.
7. Still not able to upload pictures for some reason. Will look into it. In the meantime, I'm happy to email pics just drop me a message. Thanks.
8. Hi folks, I'm selling my Fender Bassman combo, 2x10" speakers and a very powerful 250 Watts. If you are after a weedy, thin sounding combo, look elsewhere! Has everything you could want: Semi parametric mid range EQ 250 Watts (sounds louder IMO) Balanced DI Room Balance (EQ tilt, very useful for a quick sort out of your sound) Contour (EQ 'Scoop' facility) Extension speaker output Effects loop 2 x Eminence 10" Drivers HF Horn I recently purchased this fantastic amp for a gig I have just completed. After careful consideration I have decided that it's just too much for my needs now, I don't need anything this loud as a second amp, so have decided to put it up for sale. If I get no interest I'll happily keep it. It will happily keep up with a drum kit and handle a medium sized gig. I had it looked at by a very good tech (cost £75), who gave it a thorough examination, reinforced the smoothing capacitor joints (needed doing), and gave it back to me with a clean bill of health. So buy this combo with the reassurance that it is in good working order and a good, straight bit of kit. Currently rolling on castors, of which there are only three - it was like this when I got it. They are removable/replaceable so easy enough to sort out. Worth noting. Price: £185.00 Thanks for looking, if you are interested PM me of call me on 07719154668 Cheers, Jo Unable to upload photos at the moment on this site... 9. Offer bump!
10. Hi there, I'm playing in the theatre in Lincoln over christmas and may need the odd dep. i thought I'd see if there's anyone more local to the area than people I know, and if so would you be up for/available for covering if needed. Obviously I'd need to know you're up to the job, in the nicest possible way, so any CV type stuffs would be good. Anyway, worth posting a topic on here as it's a good community. Please send me a PM ONLY if you want to get in touch/any info, rather than commenting below, as I will defo read your details that way and get back to you. Thanks for looking, Jo
11. Any info? One last chance... : (
12. Hi mate I've sent a PM. (shotgun!)
13. Series 1 Epifani cab - amazing cabs and increasingly rare. Someone after this size/weight cab should snap it up - there's nothing better IMO than the series 1 stuff, if your wanting something in the modern/soulful/funky/warm sonic window then it's a no brainer. Good luck with the sale and have a bump for a rare beauty. Highly recommended.
14.
I can highly recommend Jo, After a great many years away from bands and gigging (mortgage, family, 'proper' career etc) I decided to learn a new instrument. I always fancied trying the bass so bought myself a cheap eBay Yamaha and took up lessons with Jo (see my post above). Now, after 10 months of a lesson a week I have become quite competent. Jo has provided the balance between proper technical discipline and fun I was looking for. As a result I bought myself a Limited edition Gibson Heritage SG bass and Laney amp and am starting to look for musicians to Jam with. All this despite only being able to practice a couple of hours a week! As Jo said to me after one lesson: "you are proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks". Whilst at the time I was not quite sure how to take this he is quite right, I may be an old dog but I am an old dog with a new talent thanks to him. Thanks Jo!
Thanks Ian for your kind words. Your cheque's in the post!!
15. ^^^^End of year offer bump ^^^^
16. Okay, Does anyone know this member and anyway of contacting to find out if this is still for sale? It'd be perfect for me.. But dead thread and no response. I know it's optimistic but I'd hate to miss it.. Thanks
17. Hi there, Am really interested in this and have sent 2 PM's over the last week or so - would be great to hear back from you either way. Many thanks, fgz
18. Some aimless hate in some comments is not productive. Yes if a bass made from an old door works for you then play it and be happy, that's exactly the point. Im a bit offended by the use of the word anecdote vs data. My main bass is my cheapest bass, there's no illusion or agenda in my mind.
19. IME, Us or Japan, even Mexican Isnt really relative when it comes to tone/playability. There's good and bad of each. If you find an instrument that's decent and you love playing then it's golden regardless of what's written on the end of it. Prices tend to vary for each model, but just do some googling of what you're looking at and you'll get a good idea of whether the price is good or not. My most valuable instrument to me happens to also be the cheapest. I guess a big decision buying an instrument is whether it's an investment/bargain or a playing thing...
20. I also have a small website with more about me/sound clips etc.. http://jophillpotts.com/www.jophillpotts.com/Home.html Always nice to hear from new people and start new students so please feel free to get in touch for a chat if you're thinking about lessons in the area.
21. Steve is a top bloke, and this bass has THAT P bass thing going on. Light too. Buy/Trade with absolute confidence this bass has had a good home and Steve is great to deal with. (Hope you're well Steve, must see you soon!)
22. Wow. Times must be hard! Good luck with the sale this looks stunning, I've never seen one like this before. All Celinders I've played, and the one I owned, have been phenomenal basses.
23. Ah that makes sense - thanks
24. It's just the type of pick up. Usually you find a humbucker type pickup in an active set up. Not 'active' but the type of pickup has more going on in terms of coil design to achieve reduced, or no hum. The only 'active' thing will be the preamp which the pickup (whatever the type) is wired to. Humcancelling, or split coil, stacked coil etc etc pickups tend to have a lower output than your traditional single coil pup and can sound compressed and quiet by comparison. Which is where the preamp comes in to replenish the sound and give you tonal variety. Its normally about quietness with this pickup design. Single coils (commonly left passive) sound brighter and more naturally growly so yes they can tend to offer a sharp response and snappy attack. All very natural. Horses for courses. Preamps are active. But they are separate to pickups. Pickups are various coil wound magnet configurations each offering different sounds, and benefits and downsides. Its about using what's right for you. I think you're talking about humbuckers vs single coil/split coil pickups rather than active vs passive basses. Good stuff. Fgz
