1. Great looking collection! Had one of those JVs myself and it was a beautiful sounding bass...wish I still had it. Anyway, three excellent basses and very cool looking
 2.
Cheers Nik. Sorry you got cornered by Mrs Walman in the break! But just think you could walk away at the end of the night I had to take her home and she hasn't stopped talking yet Come to that I don't think she has stopped in 30 years PA hmmmm yes Hopefully a clean loud though & that was the small rig Plugs it depends what you want to spend I picked up a set that have interchangeable attenuators - so you can set how much or little you want to cut level - from the drum bit of GAK for about £20 and I think Lee in Lick has some slightly different ones for about £12-15.
Hi Al, The PA sounded great and my only criticism would be that the bass could have been a bit louder in the mix, but I am biased of course! Will check out the plug ins - thanks, Mrs Walman was enjoying herself at the gig and that was good to see. And, as I was there by myself, it was very kind of her to take pity on a complete stranger like me... Cheers Nik
 3.
it is a shame we are so stuck to certain brands... MTD along with other less mainstream brands get ignored most of the time. the scale is fantastic by the way, GREAT Low B. very focused and tight in sound.
+1 I had two MTD's and they were fantastic basses to play and the low B in both cases was awesome! Highly recommend them to anyone and what's more, if you email Mike Tobias with a question about anything to do with his basses, he gets back to you really quickly! So you can get advice and technical support directly from the horses mouth... Nik
 4.
In Ear Monitor Royal National Institute for the Deaf
OK - Cheers!!
 5.
I used a Peavey T_Max (350W @ 4ohms) into a Peavey 2x10 no problem. They used to do a T-max combo with 2x10 as well. Its not exactly light though. I would still be tempted to ditch the lot and get a good GK cab. Have you got the GK fixed?
Hi John Thanks for that.... No I haven't fixed the GK cab yet because to repair it with decent speakers (Neos etc) is at least £100.. Therefore, i figured that if I can find a decent s/h cab here on BC for less than £100 I can probably sell the GK cab with it's one working driver for £30 on Ebay and be quids in (I think?). Plus I've got the GK Backline 1x15 to sell as well so that will help balance the books even more. I'm using my old 1x15 at the moment and that's great to my ears so on that score, I'm quite happy. But I want a back up and because I've invested more in basses lately, I don't really want to have to spend £400 plus on a cab. Though I know that's what you think would be the best way for me to go and you're probably right!! Nik
 6.
I think more often than not it's not so much the acoustics as it is failing to account for the acoustics! You can't set up the same way and position the speakers the same at every gig. Also the polar response of speakers is terribly overlooked - guitar cabs in particular are extremely directional. A lot of this comes down to how the drummer and guitarist play - if they really understand their tone and dynamics then everything else tends to fall into place. If they don't get it, then it can get really messy! IEMs would be nice but it's rather a sledgehammer to crack a nut, especially as many venues could be played with an unmiked drum kit - if only sound engineers would get over their desire to keep increasing the membership of RNID... Alex
Hi Alex, what does IEM and RNID stand for?? Nik
 7.
An addendum! Obviously in some loud situations you keep turning up because you can't hear yourself. If you can't hear yourself then you're unlikely to be able to hear damage occuring. The only solution then is to get the rest of the band to turn down - easier said than done... Alex
Very true Alex - and sometimes it's the room that forces everyone to turn up because the acoustics are working against everyone hearing themselves easily, so they keep cranking up the master volume. I went to see Walman's band last Saturday and they all had in-ear monitoring systems which were great.. though that's an expensive option for some musicians and bands I would imagine? Cheers Nik
 8.
Yes it should be fine as long as you don't push the amp into repeated clipping or the speakers into over-excursion damage. Almost any amp can blow almost any speaker if you fail to listen and think about what you're hearing - if you hear bad sounds, turn down! Alex
Thanks Alex!! That's very helpful, as ever. Nik
 9. Hi Folks, Anybody here know if i can run a Gallien Krueger 700 RB head (380 watts at 4 ohms) with a Peavey 4ohm 2x10 cab that has a 350 watt max program power rating(175 watt RMS continuous)? I still find the difference between program and RMS continuous confusing, to be honest.. I've already blown up one GK 2x10 cab through not thinking and don't want to make the same mistake again if I can help it! Thanks Nik
 10. Hi Folks, Just sold a Yamaha BB615 to Col, or Chappers as he's more commonly known here.. Col was great to deal with all along the way and very patient too..Highly recommended!! Thanks mate - would be more than happy to deal with you again Cheers Nik
 11.
Then ill have it Pm me the details for payment and a postage cost. G
Cool! PM sent.. Cheers Nik
 12.
Had the pleasure of doing a deal on Niks Yamaha BB615 bass. Nothing but praise for the guy. Kept me updated with info, even over the weekend, and delivered EXACTLY what he said he would. Total stand up guy whom I would deal with anytime, and reccomend to anyone. Cheers, Col
Cheers Col, Glad you're happy with the bass and thanks for the feedback.. Can only say the same in return really - pleasure to deal with on all fronts! I'll post up a thread on your behalf as well, Cheers Nik
 13. I had the pleasure of playing this bass on Saturday - it's unbelievably good, better IMHO than Stingrayfan's L2500 and amazing value for the money! Nice one, Matt.. Nik
 14. Cool thread this.. makes me think of all the reasons why I like my boring normal basses like the Wal and the Lakland DJ5. Mind you, can you imagine how wierd people thought the first P-Bass was when it was first introduced by Fender in the 50s? After all, the only other bass then would have been the Double Bass wouldn't it?
 15.
Try Specsavers. Most have a hearing centre as well.
Thanks John.. I'd never have thought of that but you learn something new everyday!!
 16.
Hi Al, I'm looking forward to Sat 15th!! New toys for you - new experience for me; i.e. seeing you play, hearing the band and seeing the Sub 5 in action... Cheers Nik
Hi Al, Great gig last night - really enjoyed it thanks and it was good to watch you in action, playing the new Sub 5 and the Wal! You seemed to make the change between songs and the basses seem pretty effortless... Good backing vocals too.. For anyone who's thinking of going to see the Alibi, they are a fantastic rock band Brilliant versions of these songs in particular..: White Punks on Dope All the Young Dudes Rockin' In The Free World I Want it All Rebel Yell Word Up ..amongst loads of other songs that were all excellent IMHO. Will definitely try and get along to another gig soon.. That's a loud PA though, so I think I need to get some of those fancy new ear plugs if I can find out where to get them from? Cheers Nik
 17. Had the pleasure of meeting My Bass recently and he's great to deal with! Excellent comunications throughout, good equipment that's well looked after and very honest and upfront about everything. For those that don't know, Peter also builds some very fine basses himself that are really worth checking out!! Very tempting..... Nik
 18. Sad but true story about the perception of audiences to the bass and bassplayers.. Bass playing friend of mine played for years in a Cajun / Blues band and they had a gig at a US Air Force Bass. He bet the whole band their wages for the night that he could detune his bass a semi-tone, play the whole gig as per normal and that no-one in the audience would notice. He did exactly that and went home that night with the whole of the gig money!!! They even had punters come up and tell them how much they enjoyed the gig and how good the band were
 19.
Well I just got back and spoke to the singist - my job's safe!!!! Apparently, I fill out the bottom end better which I take to mean my arse is fatter
Glad to hear the job is safe...Nice photos, looks beautiful and relaxing...
 20.
A final postscript. I 've just got back from 10 days abroad and found this letter waiting for me. Well done everyone.
That's fantastic - thanks for posting that Dave and for thinking of the idea in the first place.. Nice item of post to return home to after a holiday instead of the usual bills etc that lie waiting in anger on the doormat. Hope you had a good one... Nik
 21. Hi Bass_Junkie The pick ups on the BB range are excellent in my opinion and a good variation on the P/J style configuration. I doubt you'll be disappointed.. Nik
 22. I heard one of these played at an outdoor gig at our local town show at the weekend..There was an Elvis tribute act on the stage, though from where I was standing I couldn't see the band. Naturally, I was listening out for the bass and thought 'that sounds pretty good', so went to have a look and it was a red one of these Guilds..Lovely rich, warm sound to it and looked very cool!
 23. Great collection Pete! Is the Yamaha a recent addition as well? Nik
