You numpty All of the ones I've sold were 'starter' type cheapo basses so I don't miss them. I do wish that I still had my first fretless though. (Yamaha RBX) I suspect that with a decent pickup and bridge it'd have a better sound than my current fretless...
I can only agree with you Dave !!! How's things with you BTW? Nik

Personally, I've never been impressed with the Fender V's, whether MIM or USA made, mainly because the definition of the low B string on the ones I've played, hasn't been that good. The Lakland DJ5 I've just acquired is noticably better than the Ken Smith Designs Proto Jazz V I had, and it's way, way better than the Fender Vs I've tried. Firstly, the Low B is excellent, secondly, the playability is in another league entirely and most importantly of all, the tone is everything a good passive Jazz bass should be! Yanks always talk about 'bang for the buck' when they buy and sell basses on Forums like Talkbass and IMHO, the Lakland Skylines are definitely the best bang for your buck that you can get. Nik

Hi Ped Great to read Lowdown #2 - thanks! Just a small comment about the photo credits. You credited me for the ones on P10 for the Guildford Bash but they're not mine. The ones I took start on Page 12. I think Steve took most of the ones on P10 and he and whoever else took some, should get the appropriate credit, Regards Nik
This thread is for those of us who are still mourning over basses we stupidly offloaded. Me personally - I miss my Sandberg. In fact I miss it so much I think I might actually cry. Or I might just buy a new one :D
There's been too many I regret selling, and I few I regret having been forced to part company with, having had them visciously stolen from me by some of the lowlife that are out there! Sold a beautiful Tobias Classic 5 way, way back in the early 90s - it was beautiful with a purple heart & maple body. I had a beautiful BC Rich Eagle stolen which had a Bill Lawrence pick up on it that was just amazing. But the one I regret selling most was my Wal Pro with the leather scratchplate, serial JG1123, one of only 24 made!! Stupid, stupid, stupid. Only consolation was that I sold it to a good friend who uses it constantly on tour in the States, so I know it's doing the job it was built for..I'll post some pictures later if anyone's interested? Nik
No problem if it's still here! Though I'm considering putting it on Ebay in a week if there's no takers here...
Pete and Nik - Wow, thanks for the endorsement! It was great to meet you both yesterday too. With comments like that I hope the Smith 6 sells before I change my mind...
Likewise Steve - look forward to seeing you at the next one!
That's an awful lot of bass for the money. The Yamaha BB614s &615s are fantastic. Mine's become my main gigging bass of late despite the other two listed below. The pre-amp adds a lot of punch and they can do rock, punk, funk, whatever. Great for cover bands. Don't be put off by the word "Yamaha" - it's often much better than the F word. Good luck with the sale Nik.
Thanks mate! Have to agree with you that Yamaha make some fantastic basses and though the BB range is supposedly 'budget', it's as you say 'an awful lot of bass for the money'! Nik
Had the pleasure of playing this during my (all too) brief visit to the SE Bash yesterday. Before playing it I would have described it using words like "beast" or "monster." To do that now would be doing it a disservice. THis is an exquisite instrument, that is utterly loaded with tone and which plays like a dream. Apart from the obvious good looks, it is far lighter than you would imagine and after a brief initial stumble over the extra string, I found myself whizzing about like I'd been playing 6 all my life. If it wasn't for the fact that I really don't have a gig where I would use it, I would have this bass in a shot.
+1 Perfectly summed up Pete! It is a beautiful instrument that seems to make you want to play it more, almost as though there's something inherent in the design that makes you adapt and develop your playing. Steve is a real gent too BTW, Nik
Sold, pending the usual.
Thanks Pete for delivering this all the way to the SE Bash in Guildford yesterday - much appreciated and it was good to meet you! There was some time at the end of the day when only a few of us were left and I could listen to LukeWard and Ped play it and it sounded great. And I got home later and had some more time to play it and it's exactly what I wanted; beautiful, natural passive tones and it is a dream to play.. Thanks again.. Nik -
Hi Peter Good to see you back on the Forum; haven't seen you around for a while...Hope you're well? Lovely looking bass and in great condition. What's it like to play with that pretty tight string spacing? Nik
G&L L2500 Bought this for a bargain price after a tip-off from another BC'er. 2001 US model with usual G&L spec. Did a couple of tours with a well known British soul-pop singer, so the former owner "did a gig in Europe on Monday, went to Egypt on Tuesday, then chilled on Sunday". Got a nice "played in" feel as a result. Came with original receipt & G&L certificate. No case but I got it for a shade under 350 quid. Not bad, eh?
Played this bass at the SE Bash yesterday and it's absolutely fantastic! Makes it even more of a bargain... Nik
ACTUALLY... Unless someone takes this today and agrees to collect it, I'll take it if you can get a sensible price for a courier!
Cheers for those positive comments! When I got this from The Wigfinder last year, it cost £30 to ship from Hereford to West Sussex. Not sure what it'd cost to send it to North of the Tyne but I can find out if you want? Nik
Bloody typical, I've just come back from a family holiday in the Lakes and I'm skint as a skint thing on a bad money day, and this comes up. Would love to say 'good luck with the sale' but I wouldn't mean it!
LOL Cheers JPJ - appreciate the honesty! And thanks chaps for the positive comments - you never know JD1, it might still be here by the time you sell your fretless. Yesterday at the SE Bash, I had a go on Luke Ward's Warwick Streamer 5 that he got from Bassjam. That bass was for sale here and on Bassworld for about 6 months before Luke finally got his hands on it and, having played it yesterday, I can tell you it's an amazing bass!! But for whatever wierd reasons, it took ages and ages to sell??? Hopefully that won't be the case with my Sub5 but you never know... Nik
This is a hell of a bass. I bought an SR5 when I was getting fed up of playing everything in E flat (keyboard players eh), but just couldn't get that Stingray sound out of it. A couple of months later I read some reviews of SUBs, suggesting that they were very close to the real thing, and realising that the SUB 4 and SUB 5 both used the same preamp (and also that the SUB5 had the tradidional 'ray pickguard which I love), thought I'd take a punt on this one. It didn't dissappoint - unlike the two SR5's I owned, this bass sounds like a 'ray. The East preamp was simply the icing on the cake. Very slim and fast neck for a fiver as well. I've owned a Bongo 5, 2 Stingary 5s and this bass, abd IMHO, this was the best of the bunch by some way. Chris
Thanks for that endorsement Chris! By the way, we had a brilliant time at the SE Bash today and it would've been great to see you there...Must make that happen next time! Whilst I was there I collected the new Lakland DJ5 which is a beauty!! So, the Sub 5 really does have to go soon.. Cheers Nik

Hi Folks Well, I had a great day today and will post some pics up later! Just wanted to say a quick thanks to Dave for arranging everything and for the leads - top bloke indeed!! Also, thank to P-T-P (Pete) for hand-delivering my new Lakland DJ5 all the way from Wales, just in time for me to squeeze into the Laklands Owner's Club photos...Looking forward to playing it now! It was nice to put faces to names after all this time and as someone else has said, there was some seriously good kit in there today! Highlights for me were (in no particular order): Sibob's USA Fender Jazz Luke Ward's Warwick Streamer 5 Nick Thomas's USA G&L USA L2500 Walman's Wal Pro1 (that is really a Wal Custom..) Crazy Kiwi's Ken Smith 6 Bloodaxes 32" scale Aria bass with tremelo OBBM's Lakland Duck Dunn And if no one else has mentioned it I just thought I'd say that, though there was some very good equipment there today, more importantly, there were some very talented bassists there who just so happen to be very nice people. See you at the next one guys!! Nik P.S. We shared out the remaining beers at the end, so thanks to whoever provided them...

**** NOW SOLD - thanks for all the interest ***** Hi Folks Well having just bought P-T-P's Lakland LPB DJ5 and with an eye on an RBV as well, sadly, my Musicman Sub 5 with it's specially designed active circuit, has to go. This has been my main gigging bass since March when I bought it from The Beedster (..one of only a few of Chris's basses that wasn't named ). In effect, this is a 'concept bass' in that it has been designed to look and sound like a pre Ernie Ball 70's Stingray 4. With that idea in mind, it was stripped down and refinished, black scratchplate added and a specially designed John East circuit 3-band e.q. was commissioned, which was rigourously A/B'd against a 2-band SR4 in order to get the sound right . I bought it partly drawn by it's looks but also because the low B on a SR5 I'd had some years ago was very impressive and I was looking for something similar. And in that respect, this one certainly comes up to the mark with a really focused and tight sounding low B string, which is amazing for a 34" scale bass! Condition-wise, it's difficult to quantify because of the deliberately refinished retro look, so it's certainly not immaculate by any means. But structurally, it's sound and plays really well! The sound of this bass is pretty much as it was designed to be - it has that early MM SR4 'zing' and lots of bottom end. But, it can also do a lot more because it has a variable mid control that allows you to focus in on a particular mid frequency and either cut or boost it as you choose. For all it's strengths and unique qualities, including the fact that it's really comfortable to play and to do long gigs with, I'm selling because I've learnt that I just prefer the sound of passive basses (well, all except my old Wal Pro 2 that is ). Hence my recent search for a Roscoe Beck V and the acquisition of the Lakland. So here it is for someone else to enjoy, a unique sounding MM5 that really catches the eye! I bought it for £550, so I'd like to get £500 ovno for it. And considering that the MM Sub range has been recently discontinued by Ernie Ball (because they were too good for the money) and that the John East circuit is worth approx £140 alone, I think that's a pretty fair price, though feel free to make me an offer. I'm not looking for trades because of recent purchases I'm afraid and I'd rather avoid PayPal and their fees, so cheque or cash on collection is much preferred. I'm based in West Sussex if anyone wants to come and have a play of it first. Comes with a gig bag and I'm happy to ship it wherever, though obviously, that's extra. Like most of you, I'd rather not ship a bass but I always take great care when doing so to ensure the bass arrives in exactly the same condition as it left . Comes with a gig bag and the original MM circuit. Here's some more pictures: MM Sub 5 MM Sub 5 John East circuit MM Sub 5 Headstock MM Sub 5 close up MM Sub 5 back It'll be with me at the South East Bash today if anyone who's going wants to check it out. Thanks for looking, Nik

Sold pending the usual.....Really happy to avoid Evil Bay.. Thanks for the interest! Hi Folks Reduced to £180 plus p&p before going on Ebay!! Well having just bought P-T-P's Lakland LPB DJ5, sadly, my Yamaha BB615 (along with a bunch of other stuff including my MM Sub 5) has to go. This has been my back-up bass since January and IMHO, is one of the best basses out there for the money at the moment. Condition-wise, it's easily 9/10 having never been used really except for the occassional rehearsal and to sit on a stand looking good at gigs! You should be able to see that in the photos, though it's sometimes difficult to photograph well a bass that has a really dark black finish. When I bought it from GAK, it needed a bit of work, so I had it set up by my local luthier Graham Wheeler, who not only did all the usual stuff, but he sanded the back of the neck down so it's silky smooth to the touch and plays beautifully! I paid £270 at GAK and it's had a few quid spent on the set-up, so I'd like £180 plus p&p for it if anyone's interested. I'd rather avoid PayPal and their fees, so cheque or cash on collection is much preferred. I'm based in West Sussex if anyone wants to come and have a play of it first. Comes with a gig bag and I'm happy to ship it wherever, though obviously, that's extra.
